Kratika Sengar 'I want to play strong characters'
From the chirpy P2 in Kasautii Zindagii Kay to the valiant Lakshmibai in Jhansi Ki Rani and now a divorcee in Punar Vivaah, Kratika Sengar is ready for everything.
Do you think the concept of re-marriage encourages a woman to give up on a failed relationship?
Yes, it does! I completely identify with the concept of Punar Vivah. While one shouldn't simply let go of a relationship they have taken care to build, there is no use holding on to it and staying in the marriage if things are not working. It would then be better for both the individuals involved to end the marriage and move on. However, I can't identify with Aarti's complex character completely as I am unmarried.
What if the kids are involved?
Well kids suffer, but then it's not necessarily true that only the kids of divorced parents suffer. A bad marriage can put as much pressure on the children as a divorce. Until the child grows up and moves out on his own, their parents' relationship keeps affecting him.
After playing Rani Lakshmibai in Jhansi Ki Rani, was it a natural progression to portray a strongwilled housewife in Punar Vivah?
Yes, I guess it was. Playing the legendary Jhansi ki Rani helped me develop confidence in my acting. I prefer portraying strong female characters.
How is Gurmeet as a co-star?
I feel Gurmeet and I have had a good chemistry, both onscreen and off it. We have won many awards as the best on-screen couple and the Best Jodi. The characters we play in Punar Vivah are easy to relate to . They are romantic, and yet their romance is a mature one. They won't be seen kissing and cuddling as the situations in their life have hardened them.
Your next projects?
I don't plan anything in advance. I can't be doing 10,000 things at the same time. I am content with this show which requires me to work for 10-15 hours at a stretch. To unwind, I take up different activities. Right now, it ts carpentry!
What about films?
Unlike my colleagues, I am not the sort to do a film just for the heck of it. If it's a good script and a shoestring budget, I will go ahead with it. But it should be something I believe in.
