One of the things that I like about this show is that their characters are not unidimensional. They are multidimensional with various layers to their emotions. No one is outrightly evil nor is anyone the epitome of perfection. Every character has various shades of goodness and bad in them and this is why in this show anyone can turn 'bad' on the moral compass depending on the situation.
Take a look at all the characters important personality traits:
Yash: He is honest, upright, sensitive individual but someone who had lots of negativity harbored in him.
Aarti: So many positives like her never die attitude but also tons of negatives: her impulsiveness, her sense of obligation, her need for approval that have got her into trouble number of times.
Gayatri: Can be selfish or lovable depending on the situation
Bua: Mean spirited but there is no doubt about her love for the children or Yash.
Dubeys: Very principled yet couldn't hold onto their principles when faced with the prospect of their son dying and perpetrators of the lie in the first place.
Prashant: Capable of goodness as we saw in Lalitpur but morally weak with possible psychological issues and a coward.
Vidhi: Selfless, helpful, lovable but lacks the power to introspect and hence cannot offer support to loved ones when they need it the most.
Prateik and Panku, Lovable brothers and sons but totally spineless.
Suraj Pratap: Very principled but also egoistical. Cannot tolerate people crossing him. Punished Aarti once before for going against him during Ansh kidnapping scenario. Large hearted when things go his way but unmovable when his authority is questioned or threatened as we are seeing today.
So to respond to your post, I personally would have a hard time forgiving SP for what he has put Aarti and Yash and the little kids through in the name of punishment but I don't think his character has been assassinated. When Pari was being sent to the jail, then too his first instinct was to punish her without regards to what Prateik wants and it was only Yash and Aarti that saved Pari's pretty bottom. So I think, SP's behavior is very much in character but it is a little more extreme than in the past.
In fact this is the strength of this show and the writers, the characters are so well developed and consistent with their positives and their negatives that if you look back you will see them displaying similar pattern of behavior throughout the show. But to see that, the audience need to look back and reflect on the story and the characters and I am not sure how many does that.
