Part 12

"If you girls are done, can we start now?"Aman asked.

Aprita and Aarti stopped laughing and nodded their heads.

"Me and Aprita serve first?" Aman suggested and Yash acquiesced.

Aaman tossed the ball in the air and hit a strong serve to the court diagonally opposite him where Yash was. Since the ball was out wide, Yash moved to his right and returned the serve down the line. He shouted to Aarti, who stood at the far left of the service court, to move towards the centre of the court as it was open. Aprita took two steps to her left and expectedly backhanded the ball down the middle of the court. Aarti hit the ball weakly to Aaman who had moved midcourt from the baseline. He lopped the ball straight across as Aarti was not there to catch it. Fortunately, Yash was quick to run after the ball. However, as he was off balance, he could only manage a feeble return cross court. Aprita intercepted the ball at the net and volleyed the ball at Aarti who was caught off guard and allowed the ball to roll at her feet.

"Yes!" Aaman pumped his fist in the air and moved to hug Aprita and kiss her cheeks. A wide smile was plastered on Aprita's face.

Aarti smiled at them and felt envious of Aprita. Her husband obviously adored her and her best friend was in love with her. She could sense Yash walking towards her and was filled with dread.

Yash could not believe how easily they conceded the first game point. No wonder Aprita and Aman were jubilant.

" You need to move Aarti and not stand rooted to the ground. It was obvious that when she intercepted, she would hit across to you. You need to read the angle of her racket," Yash meant to sound encouraging but it came across condescending instead.

Aarti ignored him as she was trying to deal with the stress of this fast-paced game. This was nothing like how she played back in college and she was beginning to regret agreeing to it.

Yash served the second game and his serve was powerful. Aman moved forward towards the serve, kept himself in balance, and volleyed the ball back to Yash. Yash hit an overhead down the line and Aprita step backwards to catch the ball. She volleyed a cross court to Aarti and then moved towards the net. Aarti unwittingly hit a high ball to Aman. Aman jumped and hit a drop ball. Aarti and Yash just stared at the ball dropping vertically towards the ground. Aprita and Aaman again hugged and congratulated each other.

Aarti turned to face Yash and mouthed the word sorry while Yash sighed and shook his head in exasperation. She wiped the perspiration on her forehead with the back of her hand, her expression discouraged. As Yash approached her, she pressed her lips together and her expression reminded him of a child foreseeing a scolding for the mistake she made.

Guilt pricked him as it was his fault on insisting on the game even after finding out that Aarti was not a regular tennis player. And he knew she was not deliberately missing those hits. He recognized now that he should go easy on her.

"It's fine. You are doing great. Just move when the ball comes towards you ok? The most important thing is just move to make sure the ball is within reach for you to hit it across," he said softly.

Aarti blinked her eyes in disbelief. What happened to the screaming Yash at the tennis court?

"Are you sure? I think they figured out I am a lousy player. I am going to be their target," she whispered.

He gave her an easy smile, stopped himself from moving forward to push away the hair on her face that have come loose from her pony tail and walked back to his position as Aprita was ready to serve. Damn, he could not fathom what was with Aarti's hair that always drew him to it. And why was her dejected expression beginning to affect him?

The first set lasted forty minutes and both teams agreed to take ten minutes water break before the second set. Evidently, the first set ended with Aprita and Aman winning 6 to 4. Yash was a fantastic tennis player and Aarti felt bad that he had to do all the work for them. He covered the entire court and she was always the one granting the opponent points. Although Yash did instruct her to move backwards or to the left or right during the game, he always assured her that it was not her fault whenever Aman and Aprita scored a point. And the grins he flashed her when they hi-fived whenever he scored a point made her foolish heart raced. Aaman and Yash did exchange some banter intermittedly but Aarti could tell that Aman admired Yash's tenacity as they were trailing 3 - love when Yash won their first game.

"I forgot to bring along my water bottle," Aarti informed Yash as they headed towards the bench beside the net where they had left their belongings and the extra tennis rackets and tennis balls. Aman and Aprita had taken the bench at the other end of the net.

Yash rolled his eyes and handed her his Nike bottle that he just drank from. She removed the bottle's cap and brought the bottle hesitantly to her lips. It felt so intimate to drink from the same bottle that just touched his lips. She could feel her face warmed and felt stupid. She and Mansi shared a straw sometimes and there was nothing romantic about that. She must be seriously losing her mind!

She then took the small towel from her bag and wiped her perspiration as she rested on the bench and closed her eyes from the glaring sun.

"You know maybe we should try this. When Aaman volley the ball to you, just hit it down the middle near the baseline instead of at him."

Aarti opened her eyes and gave him a confused look.

"You know whenever Aman or Aprita hit a ball to you, you always hit it back to them. Why don't you try to hit it in between Aman and Aprita especially making sure that the ball land nearer the end of the court? They would not be expecting that and by the time they react, it would be too late as they are typically playing near the net. You know what I am saying?"

Aarti nodded slowly. She knew what he was saying but the problem was that whenever the ball was coming towards her, she did not think but just reacted.

"I guess I can try," she said tentatively. She was surprised that he was being extremely understanding and has stopped screaming at her. Maybe he figured out there was no point giving her any pressure since it was futile anyway. She wished she was better at tennis and was a more effective partner for Yash since he was so determined to win.

Yash took in Aarti's flushed face, lethargic expression as she leaned lazily against the bench and dazed look as she tied her pony tail and knew he should not have said anything about any strategy as she was too tired to absorb anything. He did not even know if she had the stamina to last this match. And it felt strange that she did not utter any clever comebacks to aggravate him since the game started.

"Are you all ready to start again?" Aprita asked after ten minutes was up.

Both Aarti and Yash moved to their position in the court. Again, Aaman started the serve. Aarti admired Yash's quick thinking as he managed to pick up on Aman's and Aprita's gameplan and for the second set, she and Yash were leading the first game 2-3. They just needed to win this serve and they would win this game. Yash was next to serve and as the ball was hit back and forth, Aarti silently prayed that they would win this game. When Aman hit a cross court to her, she repositioned her racket and hit the ball down the middle and miraculously it bounced off just before the baseline. Both Aprita and Aman were shocked as they had assumed the ball would land straight to Aman. They quickly ran after the ball before it touched the ground the second time unsuccessfully.

Aarti could not believe that she managed to score a point and stared blankly at Aprita. Aprita smiled at her and gave her a thumb up! She turned and walked towards Yash and he was already moving towards her, grinning. In her exuberance, she wrapped her arms around his neck and he returned the hug.

"Oh my god. It worked!"

She immediately let go of her arms when it dawned on her that she was actually hugging him. She took a step back but Yash's arms still encircled her.

Aarti was beaming to him and her beautiful eyes shone with happiness. He hoped now she felt encouraged having scored her first point in this game. It was incomprehensible to him but somehow he felt proud of her.

"Do not do that again," he whispered.

"Do what?" Did he just tell her not to hug him again? This was so humiliating. But why were his arms still around her waist?

" Hit the ball down the middle again."

"Why not?"

So he was not talking about the hug. She should have expected it. He was too focused on the game! He probably was not aware he was still hugging her!

"Because now they would anticipate that obviously."

"Obviously? What do you mean obviously? Are you trying to imply that I am..."

"If you two lovebirds are done with your sweet nothings, can we start the second game?" Aman shouted across. Yash let go of Aarti and they walked away from each other.

Aarti blushed and felt silly that she had only scored a point and acted like they had won the tennis match.

Yash chuckled as he knew Aarti was going to interoggate him before Aman interuptted their conversation. That was more like his Aarti. His Aarti? The anxiety of this tennis game must be making him lose his mind!

P.S: In tennis when you win the game, it only helps you to win the set...In order to win the match you need to win a minimum of 2 sets...
