We do have health experts on our forum...I remember we had discussed this same BMT Issue...I hope they read and reply to this post :)
I don't think this is an attempt to unnecessarily extend the track :)

Aye Pika...you've put Gurmeet's Punjabi movie as your siggie?
Glad to have you back :)
Yes I too overheard people saying the same...Chemo sessions are required before this type of a cure
I don't have any brains in this matter though :(

there is a certain number of stem cells that need to be collected from the donor that is considered enough for the recepient. There are two ways to collect stem cells. One is by repeated bone marrow aspirations in the OR which is an old method and not used so much anymore.
The other is to give a injections to the donor and then use a IV line to collect the stem cells. This is the more common method now as it is less painful.

Usually the required number of stem cells will be collected in 1 - 2 days or rather i should see collection over 1 or 2 sittings over the next couple of days.

chemo sessions are for people who have cancer. Donors do not get chemo sessions. They get growth factor injections which stimulate the stem cells to come out of the bone marrow into the blood and that is collected by an IV line. In the meantime the recipient gets chemo in preparation to receive the stem cells. Usually there is a certain number of stem cells that are required for example 1-2 X 106 CD34+ cells/kg body weight. It is based on the weight of the recipient and that can be collected in 1 or 2 sittings
