However, first I must wax eloquent about a certain someone's entry today. ☺️ Even though we only caught a short glimpse of him and his character today, I have to say it was sublime. He was wearing exactly the kind of clothes I have always wanted to see on him and he looked yummy, right from his red shirt to his sexy loafers. Whoever is dressing him, kudos. I would not change a thing, except maybe make his stubble a little more abundant.
I absolutely loved his entry, where we see him bumping into Aarti and turning around with his new fringe blowing in the ever-present-in-serials breeze. I swear I had to catch my breath and was genuinely surprised that Aarti did not end up with two holes burned into her back from the intensity of that gaze. Anyway, on to more serious things. What we learned about Yash's character today was interesting. He is clearly a perfectionist as he is willing to climb up himself, (*swoon for the grease on his pants, btw*) to make sure his plans go correctly and this attitude has earned him the title of being the "best wedding planner" as he was referred to yesterday. He is clearly extremely frustrated by the way things turned out in the end, when they didn't go exactly according to plan. I may be reading too much into things on too little information but people who lose a loved one often feel their lives spiraling out of control and become extra controlling in other aspects to compensate (if anyone has seen the Royal Tenenbaums you will know what I mean). I look forward to Yash's flashbacks for more on that.
Yash's family seems a bit more traditional than I had expected as well as a stickler for time (with the pooja and the food). At first my mean saas alarm went crazy when she was shouting at the bahu for not doing the pooja on time, but they salvaged the situation for now with the conversation about Yash and the fun interactions with the younger brother. I loved his character too and the brief introduction to his love life. From past experience I can say it is good that they are introducing interesting parallel tracks from the outset. It bodes well for the longevity of the show and the freshness of the story. Lighter characters are needed to balance bot Yash and Aarti who have a lot of depressing baggage.
I loved GC's expression when he came and sat down. There was an overwhelming sadness about his general air. I laughed out loud when he mentioned a "ladki" and they all flipped out. 😆
Now onto the really juicy part of the episode. I have to say they took me by utter surprise when they showed Aarti's past self and the fact that she had a love marriage. It seems like they are confronting all sorts of seeming conflicts in this show and another one was introduced here. Do you have to have had an arranged marriage to be the perfect bahu? Clearly not! I loved seeing Aarti's past, spunky and shararti self, which hasn't changed too much but now you can see the weight of the pain her husband's abandonment has caused her. The fact that it was a love marriage only makes it worse because she cannot pass of responsibility to anyone else for the failure. It was her choice to marry Prashant and so the burden of failure falls even more squarely on her shoulders.
It is also interesting that Prashant left her even before her son was born and her subsequent choice of name for him. His name is a constant reminder that he is a part of his father, the only part she gets to keep. Yesterday in the discussion, I guessed that she was hurt because she was conventional and the divorce would have felt like a failure to her. BUT I was wrong in some ways and I love when shows surprise me like that. She is not only bearing the burden of failure but also nursing an enormous heart break. She clearly loved Prashant with all her heart, maybe still loves him and that is why his abandonment hurts her all the more!
All in all I thought it was an excellent episode. Like many of us, I am still getting used to the slower pace and the larger cast but it is not too hard as all the scenes today had meaning and moved the story forward. I am eagerly looking forward to seeing Yash with his kids and how he works as a father, now that we have seen Aarti as a mother, as well as because GC said it was the biggest challenge about this role. I am dying to see how he has approached it!
