Over 250 workers and technicians staged a dharna on the sets of Prithviraj Chauhan at Sagar Film City and Studio, in Baroda, on Friday morning. The workers, who are all from Mumbai, allege that they haven't received their daily wages ever since they reported to work on October 13. Repeated complaints and requests to clear the dues, which amounts to a whooping Rs 27 lakh, have fallen on deaf ears. The head honchos of the prestigious Sagar Arts have completely ignored their complaints.
The workers, who are mainly engaged in carpentry and other construction work on the sets, are forced to live in poor conditions. They have been given a dilapidated shelter for accommodation without proper bedding or blankets. They are served lunch only after 4 pm and dinner around midnight. Kamlesh Giri, a carpenter from the sets, says, "We have a make-shift canteen here that caters to some 500 workers. We have to stand in a queue for almost two hours everyday to get our daily meal. Also, there is never enough food for everybody. On most days, we have to just make do with only chappatis and dal."
He further adds, "People have been falling ill because they don't have blankets to cover themselves with at night. When some of them asked for bed sheets, the production controller sacked them."
Prem Singh Thakur, vice chairman of the Allied Mazdoor Union, who rushed to Baroda yesterday, says, "I have requested the Sagar brothers to clear all the dues, but to date they haven't done anything about it. I was forced to call a strike when I heard that the workers didn't have enough to eat or drink. Also, they are forced to sleep without any blankets in this cold season."
However, Prem Sagar from Sagar Arts, refutes all allegations and blames the contractor who had brought the workers from Mumbai for not distributing wages. He says, "Ever since we started out as a production house in 1950, we have never owed anyone a single paisa. We have paid the particular contractor who brought the workers to the studio. We usually don't hire the labourers directly. I have no idea what went wrong with their payments."
Ask him about the poor living conditions of the workers and he says, "We feed over 1500 people at Sagar Film City and Studio every day. There are support systems looking after the needs of the worker. There must have been some minor issues that led to the workers to complain. We are going to look into the matter."
