Is polygamy really a sin

Hi frnds,
Recently we hv been seeing a lot of fuss being made over the polygamy issue...It was perfectly alright to say that sajjan's act of marrying ganga or aman's bigamy were criminal acts but many posters hv committed a big mistake by generalizing the issue & hv categorically declared that 'polygamy is a sin' which is factually wrong & demands some serious discussion...
Initially, I resisted the temptation to start this topic in the anticipation that mods would automatically close such threads...but sadly, since there has been no action from mods, I feel it is my duty to hv my say here...
As far as I know, polygamy is socially permissible in most societies of the world including all Abrahamic (christian-jewish-islamic) religions, hindu mythological figures (read king dashratha, lord krishna, draupadi etc) & rulers. Biologically speaking too, nature has not put any restrictions on the process of mating...Yes, polygamy is prohibited in india only according to the hindu marriage act & that too, under certain circumstances the law is flexible.
So, I request all commentators to refrain from posting any such comment which equates polygamy with a sin as such a generalization offends those forum members who think otherwise...
Lemme conclude it with the proverbial saying 'righteousness exalteth a nation but sin is a reproach to any people'
Hope u all would see my POV in right perspective

hmm as far as i know polygamy is prohibited in hinduism but islam give permission for it but but it said in quran that its preferrable if u have one wife
in some circumstances like wife death wife not well on death bed or if someone wants to marry a widow then polygamy allowed for pleasure purposes i am soo sorry its a sin and it will remain a sin to ditch ur partner
and if we dont call a sin a sin what should we be calling it ?
what ss kn and aman did was absolutely wrong they should be punished for it

Do I need to tell u that the tales of prophet Abraham or Jacob are part of Bible...Abraham married twice (with sarah & with Hager) & then prophet Jacob had 4 wives...Mother mary descends from Abraham...though the modern christians may frame the laws to the contrary but all these are deviations from biblical legacy...

@ red: plz don't say that b'coz lord Rama had 4 mothers & lord krishna had thousands of wives...these are just 2 examples...do u think bharat & laxman were products of sinful marriages?
@ blue: Had it been so, would u blame the prophet (pbuh) for hving done what was not preferrable...
@ green: Yes ditching ur partner is an offence in every code of law...& as we know the bitter reality is that putting a ban on polygamy paves way for illicit xtramarital affairs...

I kind of know what you're trying to get at, but the point is, is polygamy something we want to promote? Its bad enough watching it on tv, but regardless of the history of polygamy, whether its in the bible or quran or whichever religion, without some sort of restrictions/laws, do we want to see men or women with multiple partners with no thought of the consequences of their actions?

When 2 ppl are unhappy with each other, and there's no chance of their marriage working, then divorce and remarrying is the norm, but for those who decide to remarry for the sake of it, its devastating for the children as well as the partner. I know that in rural India, there are men who have more than 1 wife when the 1st one fails to conceive, and if the 1st wife's ok with that, then its a different kettle of fish.

For those who live in societies where polygamy is acceptable, its ok for them, each to his own, but i feel that for the sake of future generations, they should learn that marriage vows are not to be taken lightly, otherwise they'll all start shacking up with other partners after marriage.

no you dont need to tell me the story... i recall enough of my sunday school bible classes ... however i would like to point out that these people were not christians... unless I somehow missed the part of Christ being born during the time of Abraham & Jacob?

i agree they may share the same biblical family tree but the religion of the old testament is not christianity... its Judaism.

to my knowledge, polygamy is a no-no to Christians
