Chapter 26 - Part B
Maan had heard the words. His anger rose as Muskaan walked off, excusing her self.
It was time for him to do something. A man had walked onto the stage. He waited for everyone's attention.
"Good evening everyone. I want to welcome everyone and thank you all for attending this party. The occasion is rather a little unusual since Khurana Constructions wants to extend its hand in friendship to that of Mishra Construction. Unusual because till date KC has never considered any company worthy enough, all because of its success and current MD Maan Singh Khurana." The spot light fell on Maan and he made his way to the stage under loud applause. He was handed the mic.
"Thank you. Well I have to agree. I am proud of KC's achievements. My Dadi, Savitry Devi, and father Mr Shashank Khurnana have setup this fine company and with the help of my brother Dev" Dev came up to him on the stage.
"Who is also KC's Executive MD we have reached great heights. But this does not mean that we do not recognize other companies. MC has proven to be a tough competition for us." There was applause again and the mic was handed back.
"And now I would like to introduce to you the person responsible for MC's current success. Please give a round of applause for the MD, Miss Geet Handa." There was applause but only from MC members and other clients. KC employees and Maan were shocked in their roots.
Geet smiled and made her way up.
"Thank you but please let me be so free to make two corrections there." Geet had taken the mic and looked at the crowd.
"First I am not Miss Geet Handa anymore. I am Mrs Sohan Mishra since before I took up this post. And secondly it is not I who deserves praise for bringing MC back to the top but my employees and both my Executive Managing Directors." She indicated Adi and Vicky to come up.
"Let me introduce Aditya Sharma and Vicky." There was more applause.
"Congratulations for that Mrs Mishra" The man said when Geet returned his mic.
"But do tell us, why does MC have two Executive MDs?" He asked bewildered.
"Please call me Geet. To your question, both of them have had a major hand in bringing back MC to the top. Both have all the abilities I would love to have in my right hand man and since I don't like to waste talent I kept both." There was laughter.
"Ok, Geet, do tell. MC was going downhill till you came, how did you manage to bring the company back up."
"I didn't do much. I have to thank my employees. It was them who did all the hard work. After all as MD I can only take decisions, but they are the ones who have done the actual work. I would like to thank my architects" Geet raised her glass for a toast and so did her architects in the crowd.
"I'd like to thank my creatives" again she and her creatives raised the glass for a toast.
"And the accounts department" there was another toast.
"And everyone else who works for me" The rest raised their glasses.
"And of course both my Executive MDs" the last toast. Both Adi and Vicky smiled. Vicky felt nice. He had feared this moment so much. But Geet had made it all so simple. For everyone he would be known as Vicky, not at Vikrant Singh Khurana, just as he always wanted.
"Ah, before I forget. I have to thank Mr Khurana the most." Maan came out of the shock he had received after seeing Geet come up the stage and introducing herself as Mrs Mishra.
"Mr Khurana made me learn a vital lesson. Sometimes it is better to be ruthless and walk on for success rather than be emotional and remain behind." Maan looked at her. She raised her glass to him and gave a smile. It was not a friendly or warm one. It showed the coldness and bitterness she felt towards him.
The party went on. Now that people knew who Geet was they all wanted to talk to her. Maan was almost forgotten. Vicky had seen his family look towards him and he walked to them.
"Executive MD? How on earth did you get that post Vicky?" Dev asked laughingly while he messed up his brother's hair.
"I think you better ask Geet. She was the one to promote me." His mother, Dadi and bhabi congratulated him too.
"You are not happy dad?" Vicky asked. His father had had his biggest surprise hearing of his son's achievement.
"How well do you know Mrs Mishra?" he asked.
"Call her Geet, dad. We are great friends."
"So that is why you freaked out at Maan that day?"
"No, I got angry because Maan bhai chose his words knowing they were wrong."
Pinky and Adi observed the party. KC's plan to bring down MC had failed big time. Even a blind person could see that the clients were more interested in MC now. Every employee was oozing confidence. It was as if they all were saying that they were proud to be part of MC.
Geet excused herself from the clients. She was thirsty and looked for a waiter. When he failed to show up she made her way to the bar. Maan was sitting there gulping down his drink. She left from there not wanting to create a drama.
"Geet beta" Dadi made her way to her.
"Congratulations on your success."
"Thank you Dadi. But I guess I kind of ruined it for KC didn't I?"
"Don't worry. It is good if Maan gets the occasional challenges. It will stop his nose from reaching the sky." Both giggled.
"Beta, can I ask you something?" Geet nodded.
"How well are you coping?"
"Very well, work is going smoothly now."
"I meant rather on the personal front. Vicky has told me about Sohan." There was a sharp intake of breath from Geet.
"Geet, I know how you feel. I had lost my husband at an early age, too. I had to handle one child and a company and had no other support. Don't blame Vicky for telling me. I overheard the nurse talk to him when you were down with fever. I questioned him when I heard you had a miscarriage." Geet had become still and nodded.
"How can I be Dadi? I have Riya and Armaan and the company. For me there are two lives, one which I had before his death and the other after. I sometimes really wish he would come back but I know he won't. There is an empty space somewhere and I get haunted by it every day." Dadi nodded. She had felt the same for many years.
"Geet, if you don't mind let me tell you this. You call me Dadi so think of me as such. If ever you fell like pouring out your heart or want advice on any thing you can come to me. Don't think about Maan or Vicky, I am your Dadi, too." Geet was touched by this and they hugged.
Maan saw Geet. He had seen her come to the bar and leaving, he felt his heart being stabbed again. Why was it always him? He had loved Samira, she used him.
He liked Geet and she was someone elses'. No wonder she didn't want to leave MC. She was Sohan's wife. This also explained why she wasn't bothered about money or why she showed no interest in his job offer. It also explained why she had slapped him. Still Maan couldn't come to term with the fact that Geet was given away. Strangely he felt really calm. This party proved to be a real blow to KC's image. He had, unknowingly, helped MC to overpower him. But it was Geet and hence he kind of didn't mind.
They reached dinner time. Dadi asked Geet to join her and her family. Shashank, Divya, Dev and Vicky were there, too. Maan wasn't and Geet was glad about that.
"So Geet, tell us. How is it running a company?" Shashank asked her.
"It was a big challenge, sir. I have to thank Vicky for teaching me the ABC of business. If he wouldn't have been there to help I would have never managed." They all looked at her.
"What about your husband?"
"He was a dear guy but hopeless in business. I could have just closed it down but I can't see people loose their jobs because of me so I tried by best." They had all heard the he was'. Divya hesitantly asked:
"He was?"
"Yes. My husband died in a car crash few months ago. I took over shortly after his death" Geet stopped as cutlery fell. She just kept looking at her plate. She knew people would find out sooner or later, maybe it was better now and like this. There was a silent moment. They all understood.
Vicky looked at his friend who was sitting opposite to him.
"Excuse me" Geet got up and rushed away. Vicky followed her.
Vicky reached Geet who was in a corridor near the bar. Tears were running down her face and she was supporting herself against the wall.
"It hurts Vicky" she said in a low voice.
"Why can't the pain just leave me?" Vicky didn't know what to answer her. More tears spilled. She wiped them away and said:
"Vicky, go back to dinner. I think I will go now. This is too much for me, I am not used to all this." Geet left and Vicky reluctantly returned.
"Where is she?" They asked.
"She went home. It is still difficult for her." They nodded.
They dined in silence.
The party slowly came to an end and guests started leaving. Maan was still at the bar. He was lost in his thoughts about Geet. Dev helped him to the car and then his room. He fell asleep as soon as he hit the feathers.
