"Ohfo. Don't tell me you have all forgotten me! I can't believe the people that I once thought of so close to me has forgotten my very existence. Oh the horror!" he said in mock disappointment. He turned to Khushi. "What's the matter, Khushi? You look like you've seen a ghost." he said to her.
Nani was the first to recover from her initial shock, figuring out who was in front of her. "Aditya? Beta, is that really you?" she asked unbelieving. Adi turned to the elder in the house and smiled genuinely. "Yes Nani, it's me, Aditya." At him announcing his identity, he heard 2 screams and flinched at the assault on his ears. He was suddenly embraced by two sets of hands, crushing him, preventing him from breathing. "Can't...breath..." he rasped out as best he could. Anjali and Mami stepped back one step, but they went into their questions.
He couldn't take the nonstop questions anymore. "Enough! Sit down. And I will answer all your questions." They all sat down while Khushi went to make tea and get snacks. When she came back, Anjali and Mami were taking turns asking questions and Adi was answering them. Once she handed everyone a cup, she sat down and asked her own question. "Adi, how do you know Nani and Di and Mami. You never said anything about meeting them." Adi looked at the four Raizada ladies. "When I would come to Delhi during my summers, I would stay here. My grandma and Nani were very good friends. My mom was like a daughter to her. She grew up with Manohar Mama and Avantika Mami. So it only made sense to come here and visit them during the summers," he explained. Just then, the front door opened and walked in Arnav. Khushi got up at the same instant that Arnav walked into the sitting area. Khushi walked up to their room and closed the door after her. She walked to the cupboard and took out a file from under her clothes. She sat down on the bed and started thinking about everything had happened. She looked over the papers as she thought about what to do.
Now that Adi had come, he would help her get out of the contract marriage. But now that she knew that he knew Arnav, she didn't think that anymore. As she continued looking over the files and thinking over a plan, another thought occurred to her. Arnav had always been a quiet child, didn't socialize. So maybe they weren't close and Adi would help her instead of Arnav. But then what did she know about the man she called her husband. Everyday, she learned something new about him.
Arnav walked into the room and saw his sister, grandmother and aunt sitting talking with Adi. He watched him closely and tried to figure out where he had seen him. When he had seen him at the temple, he had felt a sense of familiarity with him. As much as he tried to recall the man sitting so comfortably with his family, he couldn't remember anything. Arnav knew this man wasn't associated with him through business nor family.
"Chote!" he heard his sister's voice break his thoughts. He walked towards his sister and put his coat on the couch.
"Hi Di, Nani, Mami." He eyed the man sitting in the middle of them, "Hello Adi."
Anjali looked at her brother and the man next to her. She saw how her brother ha looked at him searchingly. She then realized that he still hasn't recognized him. "Chote, don't you remember Adi? Aditya Sharma, Madhuvanti aunty's son. Nani and his dadi were friends and Adi would alway come over to stay with us for the summer," she explained.
Recognition slowly fled across Arnav's face as Anjali talked. "Adi? That's you? Where have to been?" he questioned as both men hugged. Seeing her brother like this made Anjali smile. After that summer, Arnav hasn't been a very happy person or social. So seeing him react in such a way upon seeing an old friend was a joyous occasion for her.
"Now if we are done with reunions, you have someone waiting for you upstairs, Chote," Anjali interrupted with tongue firmly in cheek.
Arnav pulled away and looked towards his room. "Adi, can you help me out with one thing? It would be a great help," he asked as he turned back to Adi. "Yea sure, what do you need help with?" Adi answered back.
"Some business. Let me go meet Khushi and then we can talk in my study. Meet me there in 20 minutes." With a nod from Adi, Arnav wet up to confront his wife.
He slowly opened the door and stepped inside, closing the door after him while careful not to make any sounds. The sight that greeted him was a surprising one at that. Khushi sitting on the bed, looking as if she was arguing with herself. He slowly approached her and put down his coat on the table. "Khushi?"
Khushi was shaken out of her world with the voice of her husband. She looked up into a pair of molten brown eyes that held amusement in them. She stood up and glared back at him. "Don't you know how to knock? And sneaking up on me like that is not polite. What do you want?" she demanded of him. Instead of a smart comeback, she got a smirk and a raised eyebrow. "Don't smirk at me Mr. Raizada. I'm very serious. First you assume the worst of me with your brother-in-law, then with Adi, now you come in here like you have done nothing wrong."
Arnav's eyes clouded over with anger at the name of his sister's husband. "Don't you bing that name into this house again. I apologized for that and tried to correct the mistake, what else do you want?" he growled his answer. Before Khushi had a chance to answer, he spoke again, "and Adi...I was angry and jealous. But again, I'm sorry. And that's the last apology you will get out of me. This is my room and I can come and go as I please. I don't have to knock to go into MY room, I don't have to ask if I can enter My room," he replied with a heavy breath. He then turned around and walked out the door and headed towards his study. Khushi was left dumbstruck. He was right, she didn't have to being that up again, he had apologized. And honestly, seeing him jealous and angry because she had hugged Adi had been kind of cute, she thought to herself as she smiled. And this was not just his room anymore. It was both of their room. He had to learn to respect that and accept it.
Arnav walked into his study and saw Adi looking at the books on one side of his wall, behind his desk. He cleared his throat to announce his arrival. The man turned around and smiled at him. "Sorry Arnav, I saw the books and couldn't help myself. I love reading any kind of books. You have quiet a collection here. Still the bookworm, I see," he winked at his childhood friend.
"It's fine, your free to use them and the study if you need it. And yes, I still love reading. It's a great stress reliever. I come in here when I'm done with a big deal or am under a lot of pressure and just read. It really helps." Arnav walked around the desk and stood next to Adi.
"What did you want to talk about, Arnav? You looked serious, so what is it? You said it was business," Adi questioned.
Arnav motioned for him to sit and offered him coffee, which he accepted. He then put one mug in front of Adi and one in front of his spot. "It is sort of business. I actually turned it from personal to business and now I don't know what to do. I need your help," he looked at Adi.
"Is this about your marriage to Khushi?" Adi asked cautiously.
"Yes. I did something stupid in anger and now I can't fix it. In fact I might have made it worse."
"Arnav, Kumari told me about your contract marriage. Honestly speaking, that was a very stupid thing for you to do. Since when do you just act? You always look at everything. So what happened here? But I'll help. Only because I know that Kumari loves you and that you love her. Aside from that, I would have made sure that she had gotten away from you as soon and as far away as possible."
Arnav looked at him in surprise. "She still loves me? And I don't know. I was so caught in my rage that I didn't think about anything else. My only thought was that she had betrayed me. And I had to make her mine. But I was a complete dumbass. I agree with that, but thank you for helping me." Arnav looked at him and thanked the God he didn't believe in.
"Now, if Kumari is anything like what he used to be, she gets jealous easily. So we just need to make her jealous and make her admit her feelings," Adi said as he smiled. The plan was already making its way into his head, he had it all worked out in just the few seconds that Arnav had given his little speech.
"Jealous?" Arnav smiled at the thought of his wife getting red in the face as she watched him with someone else. "I can work with that. And I have the perfect person in mind too. Now what else did you have in mind?" Both men has the heads low in conversation as they went over the plan. And that's how Khushi found them half an hour later.
When Khushi opened the door, both men jumped in thier seats and looked towards her, resembling two deer caught in the headlights of a car comin at them. "What is wrong with you two? I'm not a ghost or anything. Just can to get you for lunch." And with that she left them again. Both men looked at each other and started laughing. Finally their laughter subdued, "That was close. Well we got everything planned. The setting up comes next," Adi spoke up as he wiped a tear away.
Arnav smiled at Adi and added, "Let the fun begin."
