Valentine's Day is celebrated on the 14th of February, as a day to commemorate true love for someone.

The actual origin of Valentine's Day is unknown but there are many different stories to it. One such story is of a St. Valentine who had disobeyed the Roman Emperor, Claudius II. Legend has it that the Emperor believed young men were better soldiers and hence stopped them from marrying. St Valentine secretly continued performing marriages but then was discovered and sent to death.

Valentine's Day is also linked to Cupid: the god of love. In Roman mythology, Cupid was the son of Venus (the goddess of love and beauty). He causes people to fall in love with each other by shooting them with magical arrows. According to legend, Cupid himself fell in love with a mortal maiden named Psyche who was so beautiful that Venus was jealous of her! Venus did not allow Psyche to see Cupid's face but Psyche couldn't resist the temptation and therefore was punished! She had to perform three hard tasks that ended up killing her. Cupid, ever in love, brought Psyche back to life and the gods who were moved by their love granted Psyche immortality.

Over the years Valentine's Day is about showing love and affections to one another. This includes gift giving such as chocolates, flowers and cards. These have often been decorate with hearts to symbolise the essence of human affections. Red roses are also given to symbolise unity and passion, whilst other coloured roses are given to symbolise different messages such as white is for innocent and purity of love.
