1: Nenokkadine - Movie Review: Brilliant Psychological Thriller
Posted by: Shekhar Published: Friday, January 10, 2014, 6:44 [IST] Ads by

Superstar Mahesh Babu's 1: Nenokkadine, which has been directed by Sukumar, is one of the most-talked about and highly-anticipated Telugu movies. The promos of the film have created lot of curiosity among the viewers. Having released in theatres today, the movie is much more than what has been expected from it. Made on par with Hollywood standards, this film is sure to become a landmark film in Prince's career.

The movie 1: Nenokkadine is a psychological thriller and it is high on action quotient. Mahesh Babu's electrifying performance is the main highlight in the film. Sukumar's engrossing screenplay and emotionally-charged dialogues, Devi Sri Prasad's songs and background score, R Rathnavelu's amazing camera work, brilliantly-choreographed action and chases scenes, Kriti Sanon's glamour and exotic locales are other big attractions in the film. The dragging narration in the second half and lack of entertainment quotient are its big drawbacks.

Sukumar has chosen an interesting story, which has not been explored many times in Tollywood. The film 1: Nenokkadine is all about a young guy, who is desperate to know his identity. Having lost his memory in an accident, he goes in search of his true self. The director seems to have drawn inspiration from a Hollywood film The Bourne Identity. Though its storyline is simple, the director has included lot of twists and turns in the narration, which makes the audience glued to screens throughout the film.

Not many directors dare to include commercial elements in a psychological thriller, but Sukumar has done it very nicely without harming the tempo of 1: Nenokkadine. Since it is a big-budget movie, he has balanced the content and commercial viability of the film. He has embedded it with plenty of intense action and excellent emotional sequences in the movie. His screenplay will give you new experience.

The first half of 1: Nenokkadine is excellent and will impress all classes of audience. A few sentimental scenes slows down the pace of narration in the second half. But the superb climax that lasts for 15 minutes will compensate it. The viewers will surely walk out of theatre with contented heart.

Sukumar should be commended for brilliant characterization in 1: Nenokkadine. Mahesh Babu appears in two different getups and he impresses the viewers in both shades. He has delivered wonderful performance in action, dance and sentimental scenes. Newbie Kriti Sanon does not have much scope for performance, but she manages to steal show with her glam quotient.

As usual, talented artistes Nassar, Anu Hasan, Sayaji Shinde, Pradeep Rawat, Kelly Dorji, Vikram Singh, Posani Krishna Murali, Srinivasa Reddy, Anand and Supreet Reddy have delivered their best. Mahesh Babu's Gautham Krishna, who enters films as child artiste, will also win the heart of the film goers.

The production values of 1: Nenokkadine are on par with Hollywood standards and Ratnavelu's cinematography is main attraction in the technical from. Devi Sri Prasad's music and background score are also among the big strength of the film. Though all his songs are good to listen, a couple of them have been misplaced. International stunt coordinator Conrad Palmisano's stunts and chase scenes are also one of the main highlights of the film. Other technical departments have also done commendable job. Karthika Srinivas' editing is also good, but he could have trimmed a few scenes in the second half.

Overall, 1: Nenokkadine is a wonderful psychological thriller, which will appeal to all classes of audience. The movie has Mahesh Babu's excellent performance, Sukumar brilliant direction, amazing technical stuff. It is a paisa vasool entertainer that will remain as a classic and landmark film in the career of Mahesh Babu and Sukumar. Don't miss this weekend.

My Review:

Nenokkadine - Nizama? Abaddama?

I'm not going to dwell too much into the story because even a little more than needed can spoil the suspense factor of the movie.

The basic storyline is of a Rockstar Gautham (Mahesh Babu) who is traumatized by certain incidents of his childhood, and him trying to figure out who he really is.

Positives:

Mahesh totally nails it! This is probably the best performance of Mahesh til date. His portrayal of a disturbed rockstar is fantastic. He brings the character alive. Plus he toned down a lot and looks fabulous as well. He worked on his mannerisms and managed to cover even the little nuances that are needed for the character. Kriti Sanon is pretty good in her debut. I thought her role might be short but it's not. The remaining cast also do their part, and no one really looks out of place despite the fact that you do have a lot of characters in the movie.

I wasn't a huge fan of the songs, except for You're My Love, but watching it in the movie definitely changed my perception. The songs weren't misplaced and went with the storyline. And the visualization of the songs were the added bonus. Sukumar and DSP combo usually always clicks on-screen šŸ˜† Though I could also say that the movie could've done without songs as well 'cause of its genre. But then how is it possible to feature no songs when your central character is a rockstar?šŸ˜†

The production values of the movie also deserve mention because they are on par with that of a Hollywood action movieāļøāļø So much effort has been taken for each scene, and every little detail covered. Even when you see a frame from the movie you can see the hard work that went into it. The locations have been captured well by the cinematographer, and even the editing is crisp too during the action sequences.

Negatives:

My main issue with the movie is its length. The run time is nearly 3 hours. I feel like the director threw in so many storylines at once and then waited til the end to connect it altogether. It wasn't a rushed ending though. But many scenes could've been done without because at times it all looked repetitive. And if I'm not wrong, 20 minutes are going to be trimmed. So hopefully it'll help the movie.

Overall:

Personally I liked the film. It wasn't your usual commercial Telugu film with the right mix of romance, comedy, sentiments etc. It is a full-fledged thriller, and Sukumar manages to hold the suspense right til the end (though his screenplay falters at times in between).
