Yes they do. And they tell the power of a star. The anticipation level of a film. The power of film's brand and filmmakers to make audience shell out money for watching their films.
And in current era openings matter even more because of changed business dynamics. Films don't get weeks to pick up.
It's only about enjoying films or not but that's for fans and that is subjective. Someone may think world of KHKN but feel DDLJ was overrated.
Enjoyment factor is there for all films in different ways.
Comparisons happen on basis of facts and figures. Not subjective opinion.
So basically openings matter for vanity reasons? So stars and their fans can say 'hey I'm better than you'.
This is why Bollywood is churning out so much crap, because of ridiculous 100, 200, and 300 C clubs, and even stupider competitions about opening records. It's pathetic.
In 2013 Bollywood gave us BMB, Lootera, Ranjhana, YJHD, A2, Chennai Express, and D3.
In 2013 Hollywood gave us Saving Mr Banks, 12 Years a Slave, August Osage County, Rush, Gravity, Wolf of Wallstreet, Hobbit2.
Why did Hollywood produce so many high quality films, probably because they care about quality in terms of script, acting, direction etc, and don't ditch these things in favour of a massive opening day, or huge life time makings.
Bollywood makes crap films and will continue to make crap films until they start giving quality precedence over quantity. The only good films Bollywood gave this year were BMB and Lootera, and even those don't come close to films like 12 years a slave, august osage, etc.
