"We definitely want to break some TV grammar" - Yash Chopra

Dream merchant Yash Chopra can easily rest on his laurels but his enterprising spirit keeps him sailing ahead with the same vim. Since many decades he's been selling a fantasy world to the big screen audiences' under the Yash Raj Films banner. His films are synonymous with aesthetic delight - picturesque landscapes, larger than life sets, amidst themes of love and romance. And now this iconic producer -director is ready to roll out his dreams on the small screen too. (Things just get better and better for the telly junta!)

"Television is another format of film making"

Weighing his words carefully, Chopra says, "It's a natural progression for us. A man always wants to fly higher. It's like, if I am writing a script, then I also want to direct and maybe distribute. Also, in today's market nobody wants to share anything with anybody as far as the box office goes. I feel I am not getting my honest share of the pie for my films share. Television has been around for so many years now; and I believe that it's another format of film making. The base is same but the sensibility is different"

Chopra believes that television is just another format of film making and people are now ready to watch something different and good. "We'll focus on fiction and of course love stories which is obviously expected from us. But we definitely want to break some TV grammar." As for now the ace producer-director refused to divulge his big vision. The company has already floated a separate division under the guidance of his son Aditya Chopra.

"We've started collecting exciting scripts which is very important as it's the basic raw material to begin work on. It's no fun doing just one show. Our plan is to roll out many shows. Also, we already have huge software of ideas since we get hundred of ideas for films everyday. Now, we have to see what can fit on the small screen. I would say the base is same but the sensibility is different."

"There's too much of negativity on the small screen."

"I believe that the small screen arena is not just demanding but it's also a nerve breaking business. Programmes have to be on air everyday and one can't relax or be lazy about it. In a few months from now, we'll start the production work."

Though Chopra is not too much into watching the current saas bahu sagas, but he's all praise for actors like Sakshi Tanwar and Smriti Irani. Also, he thinks that the medium has grown in terms of production values, costumes and majestic sets.

"My biwi (Pamela Chopra) watches all these soaps. But what disturbs me is that there's too much of negativity on the small screen. We need to moderate this. I believe women should not be portrayed vicious as this influences the audience on a daily basis. We definitely won't do this kind of television but something more positive."

And this coming from this vendor of love and marshmallows, we couldn't agree less.

A very good and stif competion for Ekta Kapoor for sure whose dramas protray more negativity then any other drama in the whole Industry.

Would love to see what Yash Chopra have in store for us, definitley better then what Ekta has been feeding us thats for sure, as she turned a genuine love story KS in to a disgusting drama with senseless storylines etc.

Hope this makes Ekta step up and do better.

Agree! Hope it's more natural and romantic/cute, rather then all the dragging/flashback and a crappy storyline.. 🤢

well I have been saying this on the letters I have been sending out--yes
there is too much negativity esp. negativity in the represention of the
female...that they need to balance the equation out...
It will take a man to make the difference in the rpresentaion of the female
on the small screen...wow--Ekta Kapoor and her female team should take
a bow in their termendous contribution to the female....
Ekta Kapoor had a great oppurtunity to make something groundbreaking
with KS--she and her female team chose a different path.....

Ekta can still make a difference starting with turning KS around.

Bavie,
You have been very vocal about this point. Yes the majority of us have been as well knowing inately that negative portrayals of women in such abundance on television will ultimately have a negative effect on society.

I would love to see what his team will offer. Ekta and her team just don't get it. We watch KS for the romance not the disgust factor. The FF writers have come up with more conflicts that don't involve any of the garbage that Ekta's team needed to make KS interesting - interesting only to themselves - because the TRPs are saying we are not interested.

I hope they offer stiff competition to Ekta's negative team so they can see that life is not only about presenting the negative side of society to such a level that you leave your audience beaten by the disgust you have thrown at them.

Mala
I am sending letters out almost evryother days esp. to Zee at the moment
at what is being going on in KS. Problem is that the Indian audience is
evolving everyday and Ekta and her female team just doesn't get it---
They are behaving like juvenile delinquents here---
Well, its going to take Yash Chopra, a man to change this. Wow, we have
really moved on--ekta has the power to change this equation and what
better way then to start with KS.
Well I can see the Indian TV industry in a couple going through a
transition...it has to.....

This will be serious competition for Ekta and other TV producers who dole out similar drama.

Just like every other industry, the consumer of your product is always changing and if you don't keep up with what they want than you sink.

If Yash is gathering scripts than I hope some of the ff writers on the forum submit their ff. Some of the hit movies are based on love story and are made by guys.
