Apart from establishing the Water Lingam (Aapah Lingam) Goddess Akhilandeshwari has another story attributed to her.

Once Parvati wanted to experience the samadhi state (the bliss of sat- chit- ananda) which Shiva is always in
Lord Shiva asked her to go to a certain spot on Earth and start meditating. Parvati went to that place
(tiruvannaikaval) and after making a lingam out of water, starts meditating. Pleased with her penance, after many years, Lord Shiva comes there and gave her upadesha on Brahma gyana.

The story is very similar to that of Amarnath Linga and the curious thing is that in Amarnath, the Lingais made of Ice and here it is (supposed to be )made of water.

That is why, even today, in the temple there, the shrines of Lord Shiva (Jambukeshwar) and Devi Akhilandeshwari face each other. In most other temples, the shrines of Lord Shiva and Parvati are next to each other representing their status as the divine couple.

But here the shrines of Lord Shiva are facing each other- because this was how Parvati received instruction from Lord Shiva. Parvati sat facing East and Lord Shiva, in the form of her Guru, sat facing west.

And because the relationship of Shiva and Parvati here is that of guru and shishya, there is no kalayana ustvam (marriage ceremony) celebrated in this temple.

And if any of you get the chance to have Akhilandeshwari's darshan (she is very beautiful), don;t forget to notice her magnificent earrings. The earrings were offered by Adi Shankara and have the Sri Chakra drawn on them.
