So I was going through some old dramas I had watched, in particular the genre of Japanese "Psychological Thriller" dramas and had forgotten how much I LOVED them. I know a lot of us watch the fun and romantic dramas on here a lot but I'd like to introduce you to another genre in case you haven't been exposed to them already and figured I'd share my thoughts on them and see if anyone has ever seen them! If you have, I love you already lol.
Japanese Mind/Psychological dramas are an interesting genre you don't quite see in Korean or other asian dramas. It's pretty much a Japanese thing and rightly so since they do it SO well. A lot of these dramas are fast paced, mostly thrillers with interesting psychological twists and turns that have always managed to keep viewers hooked. One of the most notable ones: Liar Game

^One of my favorites and one of the most well known ones in Japan - has a second season, 2 movies and 1 spin-off. Based on a manga, it begins with a young college girl Nao receiving 100 million yen on her front door step with a note saying she has now entered The Liar Game Tournament. In the other end of town, another man receives the same package. The goal = do not get your money stolen. If you play, losing results in 100 million dollars in debt, winning and you get 2 million. When Nao loses her money, she seeks out Shinichi, a con artist and together the two of them discover a far more darker world of the Liar Game.
I find it fascinating how Japan seems to come up with these dramas, granted most of them are from mangas however the next one I absolutely loved called Orthos No Inu

^ What happens when a man is born with the "Hand of God" - an ability to heal with simply a touch and yet he lives a dark and cold live without human interaction and possibly evil intentions. What happens when a man is born with the "Hand of the Devil" - an ability to kill with a simple touch, however lives like an angel, wanting to be able to help people however unable to do so. Mind games and mysteries are uncovered when their worlds collide, and its definitely worth a watch.
Some of you might know about Death Note and if no one does, I'll be very very sad😭 it is one of the most famous movies in Japan and was immensely popular for a number of years. I think what I loved most about this one was the plot but also the execution of the actors, noteable the character L

^I think I've seen this multiple and even made my non-asian drama hating brother watch it. The premise - a supernatural notebook that allows the user to kill anyone whose name and face they place in the notebook, "The Death Note" falls into the hands of a college student named Light. Our hero is all but a hero, as a peculiar detective, L, attempts to track down Light and his efforts to create a criminal-free world.
I'll leave you with Kurosagi - one of the most fun drama's I've watched with Yamapi (Yamashita Tomohisa) playing his most acclaimed role.

A the core of this drama, we have a young boy Kurosaki - who is a professional swindler. He cons people of their money in various ways, cunningly and clever however he targets only a specific set of people. Other swindlers. He alludes to a modern day Robin Hood, conning other con artists and then using that money to pay back their victims. It's definitely an interesting watch, resulted in a sequel and a movie. Highly recommend it.
What I love about this specific subset of Japanese dramas is how raw they are, perfectly combining manga world with live action. Yes I know Korea has tried it's hand at thrillers but has mostly done more of the action thrillers, besides "The Devil" (with Joo Ji Hoon) I haven't seen a real well made psychological from Korea, but I'd love to see if it happens.
Anyway, if anyone read my long and tedious post, then thank you! I hope you'll find some new drama's to try if you're sick of the same old - and I assure you, any of he above will have you marathoning till the end! Add some recommendations if you have any, or share some of your fav ones! =)
