People often quote these two.. Abimanyu vadh and Draupadi apmaan.. Even Arjuna was bothered more about insult of Gandiva than Abhimanyu's death.. But when it comes to unethical killing, give some lame reason, finish your job and move on..

Yes Karna was an active participant in Draupadi vastraharan.. He had is own reason to do that.. But Vikarna spoke for Draupadi when Pandavas were silent.. Did they spare him for that? 😡

Here is what Vikarna said. Note that just b4 that, Bhima was raging against Yudisthira, and ready to burn his hands 😆

Vaisampayana continued,--"Beholding the Pandavas thus distressed and the princess of Panchala also thus afflicted, Vikarna the son of Dhritarashtra said--'Ye kings, answer ye the question that hath been asked by Yajnaseni. If we do not judge a matter referred to us, all of us will assuredly have to go to hell without delay. How is that Bhishma and Dhritarashtra, both of whom are the oldest of the Kurus, as also the high-souled Vidura, do not say anything! The son of Bharadwaja who is the preceptor of us, as also Kripa, is here. Why do not these best of regenerate ones answer the question? Let also those other kings assembled here from all directions answer according to their judgment this question, leaving aside all motives of gain and anger. Ye kings, answer ye the question that hath been asked by this blessed daughter of king Drupada, and declare after reflection on which side each of ye is.' Thus did Vikarna repeatedly appeal to those that were in that assembly. But those kings answered him not one word, good or ill. And Vikarna having repeatedly appealed to all the kings began to rub his hands and sigh like a snake. And at last the prince said--'Ye kings of the earth, ye Kauravas, whether ye answer this question or not, I will say what I regard as just and proper. Ye foremost of men, it hath been said that hunting, drinking, gambling, and too much enjoyment of women, are the four vices of kings. The man, that is addicted to these, liveth forsaking virtue. And people do not regard the acts done by a person who is thus improperly engaged, as of any authority. This son of Pandu, while deeply engaged in one of these vicious acts, urged thereto by deceitful gamblers, made Draupadi a stake. The innocent Draupadi is, besides, the common wife of all the sons of Pandu. And the king, having first lost himself offered her as a stake. And Suvala himself desirous of a stake, indeed prevailed upon the king to stake this Krishna. Reflecting upon all these circumstances, I regard Draupadi as not won."

"Hearing these words, a loud uproar rose from among those present in that assembly. And they all applauded Vikarna and censured the son of Suvala. And at that sound, the son of Radha, deprived of his senses by anger, waving his well-shaped arms, said these words,--'O Vikarna, many opposite and inconsistent conditions are noticeable in this assembly. Like fire produced from a faggot, consuming the faggot itself, this thy ire will consume thee. These personages here, though urged by Krishna, have not uttered a word. They all regard the daughter of Drupada to have been properly won. Thou alone, O son of Dhritarashtra in consequence of thy immature years, art bursting with wrath, for though but a boy thou speakest in the assembly as if thou wert old. O younger brother of Duryodhana, thou dost not know what morality truly is, for thou sayest like a fool that this Krishna who hath been (justly) won as not won at all. O son of Dhritarashtra, how dost thou regard Krishna as not won, when the eldest of the Pandavas before this assembly staked all his possessions? O bull of the Bharata race, Draupadi is included in all the possessions (of Yudhishthira). Therefore, why regardest thou Krishna who hath been justly won as not won? Draupadi had been mentioned (by Suvala) and approved of as a stake by the Pandavas. For what reason then dost thou yet regard her as not won? Or, if thou thinkest that bringing her hither attired in a single piece of cloth, is an action of impropriety, listen to certain excellent reasons I will give. O son of the Kuru race, the gods have ordained only one husband for one woman. This Draupadi, however, hath many husbands. Therefore, certain it is that she is an unchaste woman. To bring her, therefore, into this assembly attired though she be in one piece of cloth--even to uncover her is not at all an act that may cause surprise. Whatever wealth the Pandavas had--she herself and these Pandavas themselves,--have all been justly won by the son of Suvala. O Dussasana, this Vikarna speaking words of (apparent) wisdom is but a boy. Take off the robes of the Pandavas as also the attire of Draupadi. Hearing these words the Pandavas, O Bharata, took of their upper garments and throwing them down sat in that assembly.

Vikarna didn't exactly speak out against Duryodhan here - he spoke out against Yudisthir - just like Bhima did (which is why Bhima mourned his death & having to kill him). Essentially, he took Draupadi's argument and used it against Yudisthir. That way, he still credibly maintained an anti-Pandava stance, while being conscientious.

While Duryodhan, Dushashan, Karna & Shakuni were targeted, Vikarna wasn't, except that Bhima, in his anger @ Dhritarashtra, vowed to kill all his sons. But had Vikarna joined the Pandavas like Yuyutsu did, he too could have survived.

Hey thanks for the verse.. and thats why I said he spoke for Draupadi.. Even Draupadi for that matter was unhappy with Yudi more.. I really hope this man never existed.. or atleast like in ur story.. 😉
Ok Bhima was not silent.. I think Arjun too recommended elders to answer Draupadi's question.. yet it was too late and that does not make them a responsible husband anyway.. if Duryodan's slave can vow for himself and assign vows to his brothers why not say 'Stop Jest' at any point he felt like to.. anytime before Draupadi was directly/indirectly staked..
Good to know that he mourned for Vikarna's death.. I really felt he should have been spared for that one reason.. all people in the MB are so prone to take idiotic vows.. no reasoning, no conditions apply.. And how can we be sure that Vikarna, would have been spared? Changing side does not change his father na? 😆 may be he would have killed Vikarna the way Arjun killed Yudishtar... 😆

Bhima's vow was at least rational - it was aimed at those directly hurting Draupadi - Duryodhan, Dushashan, Karna & Shakuni.

Arjun's vows, like you point out, were irrational, whether it was Jayadrath, his vow to kill anyone who insults his Gandhiva or anyone who insults Yudisthir. His 2nd vow was the cause of Abhimanyu's death - had Arjun not been drawn away by such insults, he himself would have penetrated the chakravyuha, and would have done more damage than Abhimanyu.

Vikarna would have been spared had he joined the Pandavas, unless the Kauravas had killed him, in which case too, Gandhari couldn't have blamed Bhima. But like Yuyutsu, it's likely that had he survived the war, the Pandavas would have just taken back Indraprastha, while making Vikarna the king of Hastinapur. Yuyutsu couldn't be since like Vidura, he was the son of a maid.

Btw, I'm glad you liked my story. There, Karna was one of the Pandavas, while Yudi was in Karna's place 😈

^^^ IIRC, Drona formed his chakravyuh after Arjuna had been lured away by the Shamsaptakas. Had Arjuna been present with the Pandavas, it would have been futile for Drona to form the chakravyuh

For Arjuna, his Gandhiva was a part and parcel of his life. He developed a special relationship with his Gandhiva; the bow was an extension of his own self. Given that the bow belonged to Varuna, earlier, it was only natural that Arjuna came to regard it with reverence.

The only parallel which I can quote is a violinist (or any instrumentalist) having his "special" instrument amongst the several he may possess.

It's fine for Arjun to be attached to his Gandhiva, and vow to do in anybody who insulted it. What was unfathomable was his urge to do it right away, ignoring any other priorities. For instance, he could have marked the Shamshaptakas to wipe them out later. After all, he had vowed to kill Karna as well, but waited until the war and the opportunity came. He could have done the same here - decide 'I'll get to you once I'm done w/ Drona'.

Similar to the Jayadrath vow - had he not put a time limit of day 14, the Kauravas would have been forced into a permanent defensive, and Drona couldn't have killed Vridhakshetra, Drishtaketu, Sahadev (of Magadha) and several other warriors on day 14. He, like Ashwatthama, Kripa, Vrishasena & others, would have been busy defending Jayadrath as well. Similarly, had Arjun followed the tactical plans of the army, rather than go off on his own agenda, the Pandava army as a whole would have done a lot better.

i am always interested to see karna a lot.. i always love him because he is the true archery in the history of Mahabharata... he always understands people's feelings. unfortunately pandavas called him a "charioteer" or "suta". i'm feeling very bad after hearing this..
i was feeling very depressed after he received the three big curses. i'm so happy to see him after he learnt that duryodhana was a wicked king and just pretended him as his friend, not true friend...😊

when i read the meeting between Radheya and Kunti from the book "Kamala Subrahmaniam's Mahabharata". this story lines are very beautiful.. i'm very happy to see these scenes about karna's head laid on her beloved mom's lap.. it's very beautiful.. she ordered him not to say "Radheya". she will rename him as Kaunteya. karna was speechless after hearing this. i was crying after this...

he was right that he couldn't join Pandavas. he was feeling insulted by them badly.

i'm so happy to see a beautiful city named "Karnal" after him..

i really want to see him a lot... suppose he comes to India, i'll be happy to see him. i'm his biggest fan...😃🤗

^actually he always knew if Duryodhana was "evil" and yet he always there beside him, discussed about their plans, even encouraged Duryodhana to wage open war aginst the pandavas. Maybe he has his own agenda to settle score with pandavas & draupadi.
It was upon learning they are his brothers he started to have his own dilemma..
So it wasnt about "evil or not evil".. "But who insulted me and who praised/elevated me".. And later it became "my brothers or my promise"..
