PART 16
"That's exactly the sort of comment I'd expect from someone like Sameer!!...Anyways i suppose we have said everything we had to", he muttered getting up..."I guess we'd call it a day...tum next kab free ho, so that we can get down to work'
"I don't think main...", she began unevenly and saw his brows lift.
"Chickening out eh...phirse bhagna chahti ho?"
"Well, instead of the painting we could", suggested Meher.
"The lottery prize isn't negotiable...It's the portrait or nothing"
"I mean it"
"Fine then, let me see", she reached out for her handbag and pulled a her diary, making great pretence of studying.."I'm afraid I am busy all week", she lied-" Sunday afternoon is the only time I am free..But perhaps you do not work on weekends right"
Preet Juneja's words haunted her as she struggled through the next week, trying desperately to absorb herself in work, filling every moment so that she did not think.During the day she almost succeeded but in the darkness of the night , when there was nothing to come between her and her thoughts, the memories of her past didnot let her sleep.
She hadn't always lived alone.Infact it was only when she got admitted into St.Xaviers college, Ambala, she was compelled to leave her hometown and live away from her family in a hostel.
Even now, when she closed her eyes, she could see , the small streets of Ambala, hear the roar of motorbikes, the taunts of gangs of Jatt boys.
Being a city girl , it was extremely difficult to settle in a small town like Ambala.Only. She knew how she adapted to the town, from eyeing every second person suspiciously to making friends, handling bold advances of men.
In the week following the visit to Preet's flat it seemed as if she had lived through her entire life in Ambala over and over again, until, the memory of Anita's funeral flooded her memories.
Even after 5 years, bitter tears pressed against the back of Meher's eyes of how lonely and vulnerable she felt on hearing that Anita had died. She knew that the town was unsafe but it could be this brutal, was something she learnt after Anita's incident.
She and her friends always had their guards up against the Jatts, be it dressing conservatively or avoiding stepping out in the dark. But despite all of that, she herself had encountered eve -teasing , passing of lewd comments..
She recalled once, she had been cornered by 4 boys in a vacant classroom, who had demanded her to kiss them, becoming angry and aggressive when she refused. She had no clue what could have happened had her Professor not intervened. She always feared they would come back to take revenge from her but to her surprise she never saw them in college again.
Seeing Preet after all these years brought back all those memories. She again felt like the young, naive, 18 year old Meher. She felt terrified of him, the same way she did back then. It reminded her of the night when she almost gave herself to him. She vividly remembered that night when she let him come close..too close to her. And she hated to admit, that though then unconcious, his touch evoked sensations, that made her shiver even now.
