You are missing the point here. The outrage was not because of the crime but the arresting of the diplomat. US diplomats have got away even with murder in another country.

The upshot is that, if she is guilty she can be punished only in India. Thats what Vienna convention and international laws say. No diplomat can be treated in this way. US has always defended all it's diplomats, no matter the crime.

Agreed, Diplomats are protected by International Laws. But doesn't the same hold true for same-sex partners of Diplomats who are posted in India from other nations? If they expect those individuals to follow the rules of the country they are living in, then shouldn't Indian Diplomats in the US abide by laws of the US too? It's not about who's right and who's not, it's more about the inconsistency and double standards Indian Government resorts to most of the time.
