Tulsi, Prerna, Anjali, all wear clothes styled and designed by her. Nim Sood is the woman behind all the good looking faces in Balaji shows. She makes looking good so easy, but there's a lot of hard work behind it. Natashia Nafis finds out more about the small screen's style queen in a free wheeling conversation.
THE BEGINNING
I began my career as an airhostess with the British Airways, where I worked nearly for seven years. I developed an interest in fashion while working there.
HOW, WHEN & WHY
I got to see a lot of fashion and trends while traveling. This inspired me to design my own clothes and hence I ended up picking a lot of fabric from abroad for myself. Every time I wore my self-designed outfit in a party, there were lots of enquires and loads of compliments. And that's how I started to help my friends with their clothes as well, and eventually ended up opening a boutique of my own.
I had quit my job of airhostess after I got married and then I had kids. It was during that time when I was actually doing nothing I thought of designing clothes for my friends and started taking up orders. I opened a store called Private Collection, which was an instant hit and in no time I actually had more work than I could actually handle.
TV
My sister Shobha Kapoor got into television as a producer and needed a full time designer for her production house. It seemed like good idea and thus I joined her. Itihaas was the first show I did for her, which also turned out to be the biggest learning experience for me. I still remember that I used to be on the sets of the show from morning till late in the evening, watching and observing every shot on the screen and then learning from it all.
A PERFECTIONIST
My contribution is not just limited to clothes alone. I am also very particular about the entire look of the set and thus never hesitate to give my inputs to the set designer as well. I take care that the colour of the artist's clothes don't clash with the background, you know the clothes should compliment the scene and not take away from it.
WHY ONLY
BALAJI?
No, I haven't signed any clause to only work with Balaji. But it's just that, Shobha is my sister and Ekta my niece, and there's no way that I would want any bad vibes between us. Of course, there are lots of offers, but then where's the time?
STYLING AIN'T EASY
Styling is not as easy as it sounds. It requires a lot of homework and hardwork. One must have a good sense of style and colour combination, only then one should be able to source out decent stuff on affordable prices. One must be aware of the latest fabrics, cuts and trends internationally and most importantly have an understanding of the body types and body language.
There are deadlines to be met in our profession. Once, I did this song for Ekta's movie, where I had to design clothes for 30 people in a song sequence, including the lead actress Natasha, in just one night. Then there are times when I get an SMS from Ekta at 11 pm, informing me about an engagement in the show the next day. So, you see, it's certainly no cakewalk.
BEST-DRESSED STARS
On-screen: There are many of them, but the stars who stand out for the way they dress on screen are, Aamlan Sharief, Amrita Singh, Natasha and Urvashi Dholakia.
The small screen stars are well turned out these days.
Off- screen: The actors whom I would vote as glamorous and stylish are Ronit Roy, Aamna Sharief, Shweta Kwatra, Urvashi Dholakia and Gauri Pradhan.
BIGGEST CHALLENGE
Well, every serial is a challenge when I start working on it, but if I were to choose the most difficult ones, then it would be Kassauti Zindagi Kay and styling Sudha Chandran. In Kassauti, it was the character of Komolika, which was very interesting to work on. Her character completely revolutionized the way the blouses were made.
Then there was Sudha Chandran, and with her the challenge was not to over do the look. Because with her big bindis, loud sindoor, kajal and bright sarees, it was easy to go wrong and commit fashion faux pas.
WORST DRESSED
I think Juhi Parmar is one actress who needs major styling. Then I would also like to style Sangeeta Ghosh, because according to me, she doesn't actually require to expose the way she does. I think that she would look her best in simple, non-fussy outfits
