Sulakshana Pandit passes away at 71; veteran singer-actress had unrequited love story with Sanjeev Kumar

Veteran playback singer and actress Sulakshana Pandit is no more. She has died at the age of 71. While the exact cause of her death is not known, she had been keeping unwell since a long time. In her career, she not only worked in good films but also left a mark with her melodious voice. It seems she breathed her last at Nanavati Hospital, Juhu. She was born in a family of musicians. Her uncle is the classical music late Pandit Jasraj who is revered the world over for his contribution to Indian Hindustani music. Sulakshana Pandit had three brothers and sisters. The famous composer duo of the 90s Jatin Lalit are her brothers.

Sulakshana Pandit was born in 1954. She began her career as a singer from the age of nine. She would sing at functions. In 1975, she wore her first Filmfare Award for the song, Tu Hi Sagar Tu Hi Kinaara from the movie, Kinaara. She did a movie Uljhan in 1975 with Sanjeev Kumar. She was attached to the late Sholay actor who was madly in love with Hema Malini. However, he could not marry Hema Malini who did not want to quit films after her marriage. She went onto marry Dharmendra, leaving Sanjeev Kumar devastated.

While Sulakshana Pandit’s professional life saw its share of highs, she suffered a lot in her personal life. After the death of Sanjeev Kumar, she went into depression. She said that she felt hopeless and helpless knowing that he was no more. It took her years to rebuild her life. Sulakshana Pandit remained unmarried as she could not love any other man after Sanjeev Kumar. It was one of the tragic love stories of Bollywood.
