Chapter 4

RK's eyes shone with a mix of pain and obsession.
"No, you are mine. Mine, mine, only mine. If anyone dares to look at you, I will take out their eyes from their sockets. I will burn any hand that touches you. Trust me, I mean it. You are mine and mine alone."
"No..."she screamed.."No...you do not love me. You are merely obsessed with my beauty. Wake up, see the truth. You do not love me, and more importantly, I do not love you. Go away, and let me live my life in peace. You are not good enough for me." she yelled, moving several steps backward from RK
RK looked up at her, and grabbed at the loose end of her golden sari. With a jerk, she fell back in RK's arms. RK's eyes now had blood, as he raised his other hand which had a shiny knife.
"You do not understand...if you don't love me, if you are not mine...nobody can have you."
With that RK pushed the knife in her stomach. She shrieked, a spurt of blood oozed out even as RK stared at the limping body in her arms, in a dazed state of adoration mixed with rage. The silence that followed all around was deafening, yet made the spine shiver.

CUT!

The director's voice roared across the room, bringing a plethora of lights and an applause to life

"Splendid RK sir, splendid. Great job everyone! This movie would be the biggest hit you've ever given. Good show, Ria. Just scream a little less in other shots, your voice is too high pitched, but we can manage this shot in the dubbing. RK sir, your expressions were just perfect. I had my heart in the mouth."

Rk smirked, even as he got rid of the props and walked towards the press awaiting them. The muhurat shot could not have gone better. Yes, superstar RK was back. Better than ever! All those producers who had once boycotted him, were already lining up to beg forgiveness...everything was perfect again.

"Everything?" RK asked himself. Even in this blissful moment, RK could not stop questioning himself. Was everything really perfect in his life? Ever since last night, Madhu's all-pervasive thoughts were back in RK's life, torturing him. He was trying really hard to brush aside the nagging feeling. But he couldn't. If for nothing else, then just for the sake of curiosity. Madhubala was his wife afterall - how and where had she disappeared so completely off the face of the earth.
Yes, he was angry at her at the time. But now...now the truth was, try hard as he did, RK couldn't remember why he was so angry at Madhu once upon a time. He just couldn't feel that anger, that resentment that he knew he had felt, anymore in his veins. And that annoyed him, because all that did was bring back images of happier times, of Madhu's loving eyes that existed only for RK, of how Madhu felt in his arms.

And of Madhu's pale face, that night in the farmhouse, when he'd last seen her.

"Shit!" RK was mad. He needed to find Madhu now. That wasn't right, what had happened. He knew Madhu's heart had been broken, and all of a sudden, after six months of oblivion, it was like something had thawed in his body and all that pain from Madhu's broken heart was washing over him. All of a sudden, all RK could feel was her pain.

"How do I look?" Rk's thoughts were interrupted by a beaming Ria, dressed in a new really short shiny black dress, ready for their press conference. RK looked at her and wanted to puke. The pain that he was reeling under suddenly turned into disgust at himself, at where he was right now and at what he had been doing with Ria, who by now was hanging on RK's arm.

RK jerked her away from himself. "What's wrong with you RK? Don't throw your tantrums on me ok? I am a star too now." Ria retorted, fury lines on her face. Almost instantly, she caught her temper, and changed tones completely.
"Oh RK...darling...you look so handsome today...the media will be all over you. They would forget any other superstar ever existed. I look such a poor picture in front of you. You know I didn't even have any jewelry to match today. This diamond bracelet you got me...this is so pretty but I just doesn't have anything that goes with it..."Ria kept talking until she saw RK's face line smoothen. Then she gave him a kiss and started to walk.

RK meanwhile was seeing Ria for what she really was for the first time in all these months. Even as he trudged steps towards the press conference, he was wondering to himself was he really keeping Ria around because he cared for her or because she made him feel good about himself. At one level, RK's ego didn't accept that it needed propping up from another person. At another, RK found an awareness inside him that was questioning why had he given Ria so much space in his life. Why had he given her Madhu's space?

"Madhu, damn, where is she and how can I get her back..."RK's thoughts were infuriating him so much that the press conference went terribly, despite his good mood on the successful shot and his movie launch not so long ago.
As soon as he got out, RK called Bittuji. He would definitely know where Madhu was. Like everyone, RK too had heard rumors that Madhu was in US. Until now he hadn't wondered, but now RK was puzzled why Madhu was in US. With whom - she didn't know anyone there, to RK's best knowledge. And if she really was in Hollywood, Bittuji would know. Most importantly, Bittuji would know why Madhu had not shown up or said anything in the last six months.
"This number does not exist..."the repeated tone irritated RK further.
"What's going on? Did Bittuji change his number?" RK was annoyed that he didn't know how to get to Bittuji right now. Such an irony, because for most of his life, all RK had to do to call Bittuji was to yell it out loud. And then there were the times when Bittuji just barged in uninvited. The last thought reminded RK of those numerous intimate moments with Madhu that Bittuji had walked into. The memory ignited a sudden involuntary heat in his loins, a unique, primitive thirst that RK had not felt in several months now. It was a need, a cry of passion that only Madhu had ever aroused in him.

"Damn!" RK's frustration was boiling over. He couldn't think of how to get to Madhu any more. Suddenly he thought of Madhu's mom. She would surely know where her daughter was.

RK dumped Ria, who insisted on going to the evening party, and instead drove straight to the chawl. He found himself a bit surprised at the thought that neither had he been to the chawl nor interacted with anyone from Madhu's family in the past several months. Surely, he knew his mother-in-law. After that last fight with Madhu, given that she left RK, it was shocking Padmini hadn't leapt onto RK. He definitely would have expected her to show up at his doorstep questioning him, cursing him, slapping him, or just trying to resolve the situation. Madhu may have left in her anger and her ego, but it was not like Padmini to be so quiet.

RK reached the chawl, with the questions buzzing in his head. But he met with disappointment as Padmini's house was locked. Nobody was home. He tried calling Padmini but got no response either. Frustrated, he turned back, looking for someone who could give him their whereabouts, but he saw noone who he recognized or who would stop to talk to him. As he slowly walked out of the chawl, thinking what next to do, he spotted Trishna at the other end, apparently returning home.

"Trishna!" he called out, and started walking towards her.
Trishna looked up, in a look of surprise that quickly changed to anger and hatred, and turned away to walk in the opposite direction.
RK did not miss that reflection in her eyes, and when she turned away, he started running towards Trishna, calling out her name multiple times, until he finally caught upto her.
"Trishna! wait!" RK said, holding her by her arm.
"What do you want, superstar RK?" Trishna angrily retorted, struggling to break free.
"Superstar RK..have you forgotten that we are related...we are family?"
"What family and what relations...when the person because of whom we were related is no more, what relations are you talking to me about. Leave me!"
The words hit RK like lightning.
"No more?! What do you mean no more? What are you talking about? Where is Madhu... and ma?" RK blabbered, as his grip on Trishna's arm loosened
"Leave me RK, and let me go. Don't pretend like you care now. You took away my sister's life. Because of you my mother is..." Trishna was crying uncontrollably, she shoved RK away and ran.
RK was too dazed to follow. He was frozen at his spot, still trying to understand what Trishna had said.

Where the hell was Madhu?

Very nice story. This RK is real kameena. It is not so like Madhu to not fight back and try to kill herself. I hope she met with accident or something like that and lost her memory. I am hating the fact that he slept with Ria. He deserves to suffer

Chapter 5

RK's next stop was his home, Kundra House. He had seldom been there in recent months. Somehow, he just didn't like being there anymore. Now, driving home, he wondered whether it was because every corner of that house reminded him of Madhu. It was more Madhu's home than RK's, in a way. Most of what had ever mattered to RK about that home was because of Madhu. He realized with considerable annoyance at himself, that he had been running away from Madhu in the last few months. But how could he have been running away from her when she wasn't there.

"You took away my sister's life..."

Trishna's words came back to hit RK like a gust of icy wind. What was Trishna saying? Even though RK couldn't dare to allow himself to interpret that in the worst way, it was plain that Madhu was not in a good shape, wherever she was. RK was drowning in guilt of something he didn't fully understand as he slammed the brakes. He was home. His home that Madhu had made livable. He stormed in, looking for his mother, yelling "Maa" even as he walked towards her room. After RK and her own mother, Madhu had loved Radha more than anyone else. Why, she was the reason why RK even had a mother-son relationship with Radha. And Radha did think of Madhu as her daughter, didn't she?

Suddenly RK stopped in his tracks. Madhu had left RK and the house, and yet Radha had never once confronted RK about it. That was...inexplicable. Until that point, every time anything had happened, Radha had been pestering him to accept Madhu, forgive Madhu, listen to Madhu and what not. Even in their worst moments, Radha had come to RK and tried to help his relationship with Madhu in her own twisted way. But in the last six months, ever since Madhu had actually LEFT, she hadn't brought up her name at her all. Forget trying to reconcile, Radha had actually seemed a little glad Madhu wasn't around, had she not?

"RK beta, you are home...come, let me get you something to eat" RK turned around, to find Pabho standing there. He also noticed Dipali hurriedly coming down the stairs behind her.
"Where is Ma?"
"She is not home...she will come back in some time...but why do you need her...I am your mother, am I not. Come, I will make your favorite kheer for you. You have been working so hard, I hardly see you these days..."
"No I don't need anything. I need to talk to Ma..."RK paused, irritated.."Do any of you know where Madhu is?"
Pabho's eyes widened on hearing Madhu's name from RK after all these months.
"Madhu..why are you suddenly reminded of that bitch? I don't know where she is...must be somewhere enjoying her life. I am so glad her evil influence is out of your life. Her bad omen was ruining your life don't you see. Even all those nivarans I made her do were useless. Her presence was destructive..because of her you almost died so many times. She even killed your child..."
The mention of their child made RK wince. It was a like a brutal memory of why he hated Madhu so much. She killed their child...
"If anyone killed RK's child, you did." Dipali's retort surprised RK.

In the months since Madhu's disappearance and Ria's entry, Dips and Pabho's alliance had completely broken apart. For one, Pabho did not need Dipali anymore, so she was less agreeable to her usual tantrums. Dipali on her part hated the fact that Ria, and not she, had replaced Madhu in RK's life. She had tried really hard, but even after Madhu was out of the house, RK paid Dipali no attention. Instead, it was that new girl from nowhere who was benefiting from all their hardwork. Ria was the one RK was sleeping with, not Dipali. Ria was the one getting all of RK's attention and money, and in fact she was the one RK had cast in her movie. Dipali's ego was beyond hurt. She had tried insinuating RK against Ria, but he just did not listen to her. Also unlike Madhu, Ria was no saint. Scheming against her was proving to be far more difficult than scheming against Madhu ever was. To make matters worse, she was getting no support whatsoever. Even though Pabho or Radha did not like Ria, they seemed to prefer her being with RK than Dipali. And now that she didn't have a common enemy with Pabho, she was herself becoming the subject of her deviousness in the household. For Dipali, the present reality was her worst nightmare.

"You were the one who tried multiple times to kill Madhu and her child, Pabho and gave her so much stress trying to avoid your schemes that Madhu had a miscarriage." Dipali went on.
"Dipali! How dare you spread such lies against me? You and your useless husband Sikky have been trying to kill my son. Who replaced the knife in RK's shooting haan? Who put all those papayas in Madhu's food?" Pabho was glaring in anger
"And who locked Madhu's room in the fire scene shooting so she could be trapped and burnt alive?" Dipali pushed back. Pabho looked at RK's face, this was clearly not going well. She had to change the topic.
"Dipali.."Pabho said in much calmer tones.."why are you and I talking of such evil people? Madhu was a bad omen...she broke my son's heart chasing after her own fame. Let her be. We shouldn't care."
RK looked at both of them and started to walk out of the house. All these conversations was making his head spin. Nothing made a lot of sense to RK, but one thing was for sure. Right now, right here, he was unlikely to find any answer to his questions about Madhu's location. He always knew Dipali hated Madhu, but apparently Pabho was filled with venom for her too, and irrespective of what had happened, it was unlikely that anyone in this house cared enough for Madhu to bother to find out where she was and how she was. As he walked out towards his car, he looked back at his house once. He remembered the last few days he had spent with Madhu in this house. He was full of anger and hatred towards her. He had ignored her tears and her pain. More than once he had seen her crying alone over her child but he had totally ignored her - it was her fault, after all. More than once she had promised her loyalty and love for RK, but he had refused to believe her.
He had been too self-absorbed at that time to notice, but now that he looked back with fresh eyes, it was clear to him. In this home, at that time, nobody had actually loved or cared for Madhu. And then, and then...the farmhouse incident with Ria...

"when the person because of whom we were related is no more, what relations are you talking to me about"

Trishna's words pierced through RK as he sat in his car and stared at the steering wheel, wondering where to go next, where to find the answers to the questions that burnt him. He called his new manager and asked him to get hold of Bittuji for him from anywhere. He was his only hope at this point.
Dejected, RK drove to the nearest bar.
