Simply Tabu

Tabu in The Namesake |
After interacting several times with Tabu, I have realised that she is certainly not your typical Bollywood actress. The last time we interacted was when she was shooting for a Bengali film Abar Aranye in north-eastern Bengal, with Gautam Ghosh. "Why do you want to do an interview when you are in a forest?" she said, asking me to switch off my tape recorder and listen to the twittering of birds instead. Tabu is close to her character Ashima from Mira Nair's The Namesake. She can be casual and friendly but she also needs her space. "I am averse to interviews. Will you open your heart to a stranger?" she asked. "And even if I give an interview, you'll call it 'thanda'. I don't give quotes, I just speak my mind," she added.
Also she never responds to SMSes and only calls to cancel her appointments. Photographer Vicky Idnani admits, "Shooting a photo-session with Tabu is a great pleasure, provided she agrees to do one. It's difficult to get through to her."
After watching The Namesake, it becomes evident that Tabu (like Ashima) believes in living life on her own terms.
