TV.com summary |
Smallville is an American television series that follows the adventures of a young Clark Kent (Tom Welling), as a teenager living in Smallville, Kansas, during the years before he becomes Superman. Created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, Smallville debuted on October 16, 2001 on the WB Network, though it now airs on The CW (following the merger of The WB and UPN after the respective networks ceased operations) and is currently in its sixth season. Smallville is filmed in Vancouver area, British Columbia, Canada.
The series inspired a spin-off pilot episode (Aquaman) that was never aired. Promotional tie-ins have included: three sets of online web series, two of which were produced by Verizon (Smallville: Chloe Chronicles and Smallville: Vengeance Chronicles) and the other by Sprint (Smallville Legends: The Oliver Queen Chronicles), a series of young-adult novels, a DC Comics comic book and soundtrack releases. The show broke Charmed's record for highest rated debut for The WB, with 8.4 million viewers tuning in for its pilot episode. Viewers will often observe lines of dialogue, guest stars, character wardrobe, musical scores, and scenic design used as allusions to the Superman comic books and films.

Back in 1998, Warner Brothers Television began pre-production of a proposed television series about a teenage Batman, tentatively titled simply Bruce Wayne.[1] Based on a pilot script, it focused on young Wayne, Vicki Vale, Selina Kyle, Harvey Dent, and Jim Gordon.[1] Tim McCanlies, who wrote the film The Iron Giant, wrote the pilot script and series bible for Tollin-Robbins Productions. The project, however, never got off the ground and into production. Because Warner Bros. was working on rebooting the Batman film franchise, all production was stopped on the television series.
Eventually, in 2000, Tollin-Robbins chose to purchase the rights to do a series about the younger years of the Clark Kent character, and brought in creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. They created a "No Tights, No Flights" rule, vowing Clark would not, at any point, fly or don the suit during the run of the show.[2] Michael Rosenbaum was cast as Lex Luthor, Kristin Kreuk as Lana, and a young construction-worker-turned-model-turned-actor named Tom Welling as Clark. Also cast were Allison Mack as Chloe Sullivan, Sam Jones III as Pete Ross, Eric Johnson as Whitney Fordman, John Glover as Lionel Luthor, Cynthia Ettinger as Martha Kent and John Schneider (of The Dukes of Hazzard) as Jonathan Kent. After the pilot for the series had already been finished, for unknown reasons, Cynthia Ettinger was replaced with Annette O'Toole (who played Lana Lang in 1983's Superman III), and Cynthia's parts were reshot with Annette O'Toole.
The concept of Smallville has been described by Warner Brothers as being a reinterpretation of the Superman mythology from its roots. Recently, since the November 2004 reacquisition of Superboy by the Siegels, there has arisen contention regarding a possible copyright infringement. The dispute is over ownership of the fictional Smallville, title setting of the show, and a claimed similarity between Superboy's title character and Smallville's Clark Kent. The heirs of Jerry Siegel claim "Smallville is part of the Superboy copyright",[3] of which the Siegels own the rights.
Smallville is filmed at various locales in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, Canada.[4] The show is produced at BB Studios in Burnaby, a suburb of Vancouver.[5]
However, "main street" Smallville is Cloverdale, British Columbia.[4] Cloverdale is particularly proud of being a filming site for the show; at its entrance is a huge sign which reads "Home of Smallville.[4]" When filming started, the high school exteriors were shot at the Vancouver Technical School, interiors at Templeton Secondary School.[6] The Kent farm is a real farm located in Aldergrove.[7]
A movie house, the Clova Cinema in Cloverdale, is used for exteriors of The Talon[8], (the show's coffee house), which is owned by Lex Luthor and managed by Lana Lang. In the show, before being turned into a coffee house, The Talon was formerly Smallville's movie theater.
Most episodes feature a song or songs by an alternative rock act. Two soundtrack albums were released, with the second following two years after the first. As yet, none of Mark Snow's Americana-flavored original scores (which at times incorporates John Williams' iconic themes from Superman: The Movie) has been released. On February 25, 2003, Smallville: The Talon Mix was released. The Talon Mix featured a selected group of artists that supplied music for the show.[9] Following that release, on November 8, 2005, Smallville: The Metropolis Mix was released. It followed the same format, featuring selected artists from the show's music.[10]
The series follows the life of a teenage Clark Kent living in the town of Smallville, Kansas at the beginning of the 21st century. Clark Kent copes with adolescence while his superpowers (x-ray vision, superhearing, etc.) develop, exploring his extraterrestrial origins and struggling to discover his destiny.
The series often deals with the people in Clark Kent's life: the trials and tribulations of his adoptive human parents, Jonathan Kent and Martha Kent; friendship with his peers Chloe Sullivan and Pete Ross; his attempts at a relationship with his sometime love interest Lana Lang; and especially his peculiar friendship with a young Lex Luthor and how this gradually decays into their mutual enmity of legend.
Smallville has established a number of Superman's powers throughout its history. The Pilot introduced Clark as being familiar with his super strength, super speed and becoming aware of his invulnerability, after being hit by a car. Over time, Clark learns new abilities and powers that Superman will possess in the future. A new ability is generally introduced in one episode that centers around Clark discovering, learning to understand and then ultimately controlling the new found power. As the series progressed, Clark exhibits, and learns to control, super vision in the episode "X-Ray", heat vision in the episode "Heat", super hearing in "Whisper", and super breath in "Sneeze". His super hearing developed as a consequence of an injury rendering Clark temporarily blind. Clark's abilities, namely his strength, invulnerability and speed, have continually grown in intensity throughout the series. Many early episodes chronicled his body's reaction to being shot, at first becoming bruised, and later showing few if any marks.
The element of kryptonite is used as a recurring plot device throughout the series. Kryptonite is shown to have bizarre and lingering effects on human physiology and the young superhero often encounters mutated villains who have developed bizarre powers, such as psychic abilities, shapeshifting, and other paranormal abilities. For this reason, the show is often criticized as being predominantly a "villain of the week" series.[11][12][13]
Kryptonite has very different effects on Kryptonians like Clark. The general premise is that Clark is virtually invincible except when around it. Different colors affect Clark differently: Green kryptonite physically weakens him and could possibly kill him if he is exposed to it for too long. Red kryptonite causes him to set aside moral compunctions and act out on his impulses and dark desires. Black kryptonite splits Clark into (and merges him back together from) two separate beings exhibiting two personalities (Clark Kent and Kal-El). Silver kryptonite has appeared once, in the episode "Splinter"; its origins are unspecific but its effect deals with severe paranoia.
There are a number of allusions and themes which relate to the Superman franchise in many ways, outside of the obvious references to the Superman name, colors or costume.[14] One of the most obvious of these is that Clark is almost always seen wearing combinations of red, yellow and blue, an allusion of his costume to come.[15] In addition, Clark is frequently told by other characters he looks good in either blue or red.[original research?] Clark's surroundings maintain a similar theme; the Kent farm has objects which colors are either red, yellow or blue. For example, their house is yellow, the barn is red and the truck is blue.[original research?]
In addition to the Kent Farm, in seasons one through to four, Smallville High School represents many of these allusions as well.[original research?] The school mascot, which is a crow, wears a red cape, with a crest on its chest that has the letter S (for Smallville). Also, two of Superman's colors—red and yellow—are abundant in the school. As well as the references to the Superman character, the series makes numerous references to other Superman lore and media.[16] It should also be noted that the Superman films are referenced through the cast, as Annette O'Toole (who plays Clark's mother) played the role of Lana Lang in Superman III in 1983 and Terence Stamp (who voices Clark's biological father, Jor-El) played General Zod in both Superman and Superman II.[original research?]
The first season was a tremendous success, but some fans balked at the frequent plot device of a villain (or outcast classmate) deriving power from kryptonite exposure and appearing in only one episode, becoming known as the "freak of the week."[11][12][13]
Season 2 had fewer "freaks of the week", focusing more on character development and relationship building. Several key plot points included Lex becoming more entangled in conflict with his father, Chloe digging into Clark's past and making deals with Lionel, Martha and Jonathan Kent's financial troubles, and a vacillating Lana and Clark relationship. The show mostly volleyed Clark and Lana's relationship throughout the season, never actually allowing the two to become an official couple. The main story arc, however, focused on Clark's discovery of his Kryptonian origins. The disembodied spirit/will of Clark's biological father Jor-El is introduced, communicating to Clark via his space ship, setting the stage for plots involving the fulfillment of Clark's earthly destiny. A "passing of the torch" moment occurs when Christopher Reeve, who played Superman in the 1970s and 1980s film series, appeared as Dr. Virgil Swann to provide Welling's Clark with information regarding his heritage.
Now, the show focused on more character development, loyalty, betrayal, and new revelations involving Jor-El. Early in the season, Michael McKean, Annette O'Toole's (Martha Kent) real-life husband, portrayed Clark's future Daily Planet editor Perry White; from this point on, other characters relevant to the Superman mythos and the DC Universe were introduced to Smallville. Pete Ross was essentially marginalized as a character, playing minor roles involving illegal street racing and threats by investigating agents for Lionel. The character was ultimately written out of the show, explained by his inability to deal with keeping Clark's secret and the desire to move to Wichita, Kansas with his mother after his parents had divorced. As of early 2007, Sam Jones has not made any return appearances.
The fourth season ventured further into the Superman mythos by creating a story arc that would run the length of the season. The arc involved Clark seeking out three Kryptonian stones (at the instruction of Jor-El) holding the knowledge of the universe. The majority of this season revolved around Lex trying to rekindle a strained friendship with Clark, Lana dating Jason Teague, a young man she met in France, Lionel's ambiguous transformation into a good father and person, and Clark and numerous other characters vying with one another in attempts to obtain the stones. This season was also a milestone because it introduced Lois Lane (Erica Durance).
Delving deeper into Superman lore, Season 5 introduced several classic mythos elements such as Jonathan Kent's death, the Fortress of Solitude, Professor Milton Fine (James Marsters), also known as the villain Brainiac, the Phantom Zone, and General Zod. Fine would become a recurring antagonist for Clark throughout the season with the central plot revolving around Clark using the knowledge obtained in the Fortress of Solitude to train for an impending doom to befall Earth: the release of General Zod from the Phantom Zone due to the machinations of Milton Fine. Season 5 also allowed Clark and Lana to explore their first real adult relationship with each other. This helped organize the blueprint for what would eventually become the series' most sought after love triangle between Clark, Lana, and Lex. As with Season 4, Season 5 featured a gradually unveiling storyline in conjunction with multiple minor story arcs running in parallel, mid-season and season finale cliffhangers, and cameos from two other notable DC characters.
Season 6 provided the show's first glimpse into the Phantom Zone, inhabited by a society of exiled criminals from the "28 known galaxies". The destinies of Lionel and Lex play out in the aftermath of Lex's possession by Zod and Lionel's adoption as the oracle of Jor-El. Several criminals escape the Phantom Zone with Clark, and Clark is initially left uncertain and directionless as he soon realizes he has no one left to turn to in the aftermath of Lex/Zod's destruction. DC Comics characters Jimmy Olsen, Oliver Queen (and his superhero alias Green Arrow) and the Martian Manhunter are introduced this season, and the first glimpse of the Justice League is seen when Victor Stone, Arthur Curry, and Bart Allen all return to Smallville. Clark appears more prepared to accept the greater responsibility and destiny in store for him, by promising to continue his training once all the escaped Phantom Zone criminals are either returned or destroyed.
Throughout the series' history, many DC Comics characters have made their way into the Smallville universe. Most of the characters only appear for a single episode, but some have managed to become part of story arcs that last for several episodes, sometimes seasons. Professor Hamilton became one of the first guest characters to appear in the series. Hamilton was hired by Luthor to investigate the effects of kryptonite. He debuted in "Craving", and later died of kryptonite poisoning in season 2. Maggie Sawyer, a Metropolis police officer, was introduced in "Insurgence". Season three saw the appearance of numerous characters, including: Morgan Edge ("Exile"), Dr. Teng ("Phoenix"), Clark's future boss at the Daily Planet Perry White ("Perry") and Dr. Claire Foster ("Perry"). Season four saw a similar number of characters appear throughout the series, including Dr. Crosby ("Crusade"), who was played by Margot Kidder (Lois Lane in the Superman films), Lois' father General Lane ("Gone"), Mikail Mxyzptlk ("Jinx"), Shelby ("Krypto") and Lucy Lane ("Lucy"). The most notable character to appear in Smallville during season four was Bart Allen (who, in DC comics, eventually becomes known as The Flash), first appearing in "Run".
Season five introduced a major supervillain, Milton Fine (Brainiac) in the first episode of the season. Arthur Curry (Aquaman) was featured in the episode "Aqua", coming to Smallville to investigate a new weapon Lex was creating for the government. Clark also met Andrea Rojas (Acrata), Victor Stone (Cyborg), and Zod. Season six introduced Jimmy Olsen and Green Arrow; both characters would become recurring guests throughout the season. Martian Manhunter made a brief appearance in "Static" and was a key component in "Labyrinth".[18]

A freak meteor shower brings mysterious green rocks and one young infant to Smallville, Kansas. Raised by a loving couple, the infant soon begins to exhibit extraordinary abilities. Thirteen years later, Clark Kent has become fully aware of some of his abilities and the pain it causes to hide them from his friends. Season One dives into the emotional difficulties of high school life, wrapped with superpowers and supervillains. Clark has to deal with the newfound truth of his origins, the meteor freaks that are popping up all over Smallville, new abilities, the love of his life, Lana Lang, and not being able to tell the two people that mean the most to him, Pete Ross and Chloe Sullivan, the truth about who he really is. Clark also makes a new friend, Lex Luthor. Can Lex be trusted, or, is he just like his maniacal, corporate tyrant of a father? Clark also has to worry about concealing his abilities from the public, especially nosy reporters and corrupt police detectives who wish to abuse his abilities to support their own personal goals.
As Jonathan and Martha Kent are on their way home, a meteor shower hits Smallville without warning. People scramble to take cover, but not all are so lucky as 5 year old Lana Lang watches her parents get crushed by a meteorite. Jonathan loses control of his truck as a meteorite skids across the road just in front of him. When he and Martha come to, they find a little boy inside a crater with a spaceship behind him. They decide to keep him, and name him Clark. At the same time, a young Lex Luthor is traveling with his father, Lionel, when a meteorite lands in the cornfield he is playing in. Lionel finds his son unconscious and without his hair. Twelve years later, Clark attends high school with his friends Chloe and Pete, while fawning after Lana Lang. Clark is finally told, by his father, that he wasn't born on Earth. Frightened by this revelation of his origins, Clark flees his home, only to become a human scarecrow as part of a school prank when he is weakened after being exposed to kryptonite. Learning that Jeremy Creek, the high school's "scarecrow" from 12 years earlier, is planning on killing everyone at the school dance, Clark accepts who he is so that he can stop Jeremy.
Greg Arkin is a nerdish bug collector. After an argument with his mom, when she finds a video he has filmed of Lana (a family friend), an angry Greg leaves his house with his bug collection. While driving, his collection of kryptonite irradiated bugs gets loose, stinging and transforming him into a half man/half insect monster. Clark confronts Whitney over the Smallville High hazing ritual where Whitney and his friends hung Clark up like a scarecrow. Whitney demands that Clark return Lana's necklace, which had been placed on him during the hazing, but Clark informs him that he doesn't have it. After arguing with and then killing his mother, Greg decides to mate with Lana. Chloe and Clark learn of Greg's transformation and Clark fights and defeats Greg in a kryptonite laden old foundry. At the same time Whitney rescues Lana from the cocoon that Greg had placed her in.
Coach Arnold, Smallville's winningest football coach, is mutated from the meteor rocks used to heat his sauna. Whenever Arnold gets angry he becomes a firestarter. When several members of the football team are accused of cheating, Chloe writes an article exposing them. After saving Chloe from the wrath of one of the players, Clark is asked to join the football team, and does so against his father's wishes. When Chloe uncovers the truth about how the players cheated, Coach Arnold attempts to silence her for good. One of the players comes clean with Clark after being burned by Coach Arnold, and Clark decides to confront the Coach about his new abilities. During the battle, the Coach's fury gets the better of him as he engulfs himself in flames.
Lex runs into Clark, literally, after fleeing a bank robbery. When Clark is thrown through a window his vision begins to alter so that he is able to see Lex's skeleton, only this skeleton has a green aura around it. While attempting to find out who framed Lex for a bank robbery, Clark battles his sporadic X-ray vision. After practicing at school, Clark discovers that Tina Greer was the one responsible for the bank heist. Tina's unique skeletal structure can be morphed into anything she wants, and it glows green when Clark X-rays her. Her obsession with Lana leads Clark right to her, and after a brief battle he is able to knock Tina unconscious so the authorities can arrest her.
Sean Kelvin falls into a frozen Crater Lake only to reamerge the next morning with an insatiable hunger for heat. Now, just to stay warm Sean must suck the heat from anyone he can. Sean initially sets his sights on Chloe, but opts for a quicker fix with his ex-girlfriend. When Sean gets his second chance with Chloe, Clark arrives just in time to save her. Clark arrives at Lex's mansion just in time to stop Sean from sucking the heat from his mother. During the fight, Clark throws Sean in a lake which immediately freezes, sealing Sean inside.
Harry Bollston, an old man at a nursing home, falls into a meteor rock filled pond that can reverse the aging process. Harry, in the prime of his youth, decides to exact revenge on the children of the jury that put him away for murder decades earlier. Cassandra Carver, an old woman at the same nursing home as Harry, has precognitive abilities and she sees the futures of both Clark and Lex.
Clark must save Pete from literally being devoured by Jodi Melville. Her crash diet of meteor rock-infected vegetables causes her to shed weight faster than she can handle, which forces her to suck human fat to satisfy her ravenous hunger. Lex gets closer to the truth about Clark after funding a study on the green meteor fragments.
Clark and Lex team up to rescue Clark's high school class after Earl Jenkins, a janitor, takes them hostage in LuthorCorp. Earl wants to be let into "Level 3" to find out what chemical Lionel Luthor was using that he was exposed to. Clark tries to help Earl, but his skin is radiating meteor rock effects. Clark manages to find "Level 3", and save Earl and Lex from a falling bridge.
Clark's secret identity is at stake when Sam Phelan, a corrupt cop, witnesses him use his ability. Phelan attempts to blackmail Clark into joining forces with him, but Clark double crosses him. Planting a body at the Kent farm, to frame Jonathon, Phelan makes Clark help him steal Alexander the Great's chest plate. Lex and an old flame, Victoria Hardwick, plot to take over both Luthorcorp and Victoria's father's corporation.
Amy Palmer, the daughter of one of Lex's employees, is obsessed with Lex. After discovering that Lex's roses release an invisibility fluid, because of the meteor rocks, Amy's brother Jeff sets out to make sure that Lex knows that Victoria is wrong for him. Clark manages to confront Jeff in Lex's manor, but even his X-Ray vision has trouble finding Jeff.
Bob Rickman, a manipulative, wheeler-dealer entrepreneur, has the ability to bend others to his will, because of an incident with the meteor rocks years earlier. Rickman convinces Jonathan to sell the farm, after Lex assured him that it would never happen. Kyle Tippet, a hermit, learns that Rickman is in Smallville and sets out to make sure that he leaves. Clark and Chloe uncover the truth about Rickman and Tippet's past, but Rickman has already managed to turn Lex, the one person Clark could turn to.
During a class field trip, lightning strikes Clark and a fellow classmate, Eric Summers, while Eric is holding a piece of meteor rock. Clark's powers are transfered to Eric, who uses them in more than just noble ways. Clark soon begins to accept, and become ecstatic, over the loss of his abilities and new found "normalness". Clark abandons his hope of being normal when his abilities begin to go to Eric's head, and he must be stopped.
Whitney loses his football scholarship and falls into bad company because of it. Ex-jocks, using meteor rock saturated tattoos, break into Lex's mansion and empty his vault. Clark and Chloe interrupt them, leaving Clark huddled over from the meteor rocks, and Chloe thrown through a 20ft. window. The thieves recruit Whitney, but he has second thoughts. Clark attempts to help Whitney and Lex fight the thieves.
Jude Royce (Nemec), a secret from Lex's past presumed to be dead, resurfaces after three years in Smallville to stalk Lex. Jude frames Lex's plant for a toxic spill at the Kent farm, and uses it as a distraction to kidnap him. Jude isn't working alone, as his ex-fianc's brother orchestrated everything to get Lex to confess about the truth of Jude's death. During a class project, Chloe discovers inconsistency in Clark's adoption and it puts strain on their friendship.
A toxic flower, Nicodemus, that went extinct over 100 years earlier, is resurrected using meteor rocks by Dr. Hamilton (Morton). The flower causes whoever it sprays to lose all inhibitions. Jonathan, Lana, and Pete are poisoned by the plant and begin to speak their true feelings. Lex manages to find a cure for the poison, but Pete drops by to express his hatred with a gun. Clark manages to save all of them from doing things they would later regret.
Ryan (Kelley), a young boy who can read minds, is hit by Martha's car. The doctors confirm that Ryan has been abused and has temporary amnesia. The Kents take Ryan home, where he immediately bonds with Clark. Ryan's step-father comes looking for him and uses him in an attempt to steal Lex's trust fund. Clark comes to Ryan's aid, and eventually Ryan finds a new home with his Aunt.
A young man, Tyler Randall (Rosales), attempts to "help" his ailing mother, by smothering her, but the nurses rush in and in an attempt to restrain him he falls out of the window. During the autopsy a piece of meteor rock is found embedded in his skin, once removed he awakens and carries the ability to kill anything he touches. After a failed attempt at "helping" Whitney's father, he learns of his mother's existence and sacrifices himself.
Class elections are being held, and Clark is nominated by Pete. Clark is apprehensive at first, but he soon takes to the idea. A rival candidate, Sasha Woodman (Farr), doesn't appreciate the competition and soon sends out swarms of bees to take care of the other competitors. The bees soon become dissatisfied with their "Queen" and turn on her.
After a hit-and-run accident that destroys his drawing hand, a cartoonist, Justin Gaines (Brody), is left with bitterness, pain and an unexpected gift of telekinesis that he turns into an instrument of revenge against Clark, Chloe and his school Principal. He runs his Principal over as he blames him for destroying his hand, only to discover that it was the Principal's son driving the car the night his hand was crushed.
After an explosion with meteor rocks, Lana gains the ability to see through someone else's eyes. Unfortunately, that person kidnaps Chloe as Lana watches unable to help. Lana and Clark attempt to use her new found gift to help locate Chloe. The kidnapper turns out to be a cop (Klimek) looking for an easy promotion. Lex learns of a ship that crashed during the meteor shower and sets out to investigate the field where it landed.
The Smallville plant closes after Lionel Luthor drops by for an "inspirational speech", and blames it on Lex. Lex is determined to fight his father and organizes the managers for an employee buyout. Whitney decides to join the Marines and leaves Smallville during the Spring dance. Jonathan finds Roger Nixon (O'Brien), a reporter for the Inquisitor, filming Clark's space ship in the storm cellar. A fight ensues and Nixon flees into the storm with Jonathan in pursuit. While Chloe and Clark attend the dance together several tornadoes touch down in Smallville, and eventually merge into one, sending Lana crashing off the road. Clark rushes to her aid, but is too late as she is sucked into the new, larger tornado.

Tornadoes have struck Smallville, and Lana is stranded in their path. Jonathan is lost in the woods, chasing a reporter with evidence that will reveal Clark's secret.
Clark and Lana's relationship grows deeper, only to be thwarted by Whitney's return from service. Clark's hormones trigger the acquisition of a new ability. Clark confides in Pete, discovers ancient Native American caves that may lead him to some answers about his origins, comes into contact with a new form of kryptonite, gains knowledge of his heritage from a familiar source, and finally speaks to his biological father whose motives greatly disturb and perplex the young superhero.
Attempting to defy Jor-El results in major repercussions for the Kents; causing Clark to runaway from Smallville and exile himself from everyone he knows and loves. Lex marries, but during the plane ride on the couple's honeymoon, he awakens to a pilotless plane descending rapidly into the ocean.
Clark rescues Lana from the giant tornado, and he discovers the storm has unleashed the spaceship into the fields and buried his father alive along with the Inquisitor reporter, Roger Nixon (O'Brien), who has discovered Clark's secret. Lex is wracked with guilt over not helping his father sooner and makes a decision that could cost his father his life.
Clark develops a new ability which frightens even him. Lex gets married to Desiree Atkins (Allen), a woman he barely knows, and seems to have the ultimate control over him. With meteor rock-enhanced pheromones she quickly convinces Jonathan to kill Lex, so that she can collect his fortune. Fortunately for Clark, he is unaffected by her and manages to save Lex and his father.
After Pete discovers the spaceship in the cornfield, Clark goes against his parents' wishes and reveals his secret, but is shocked when the reaction he gets makes him question his friend's loyalty. Meanwhile Nell has agreed to marry Dean.
Clark goes against his father's wishes and purchases an expensive graduation ring. The problem is, the ring consists of red meteor rock. Rather than affecting Clark physically like the green rocks, the red rocks affect him mentally as his better judgment disappears and he quickly goes out of control with his powers, using them for harm and for his own purposes.
Lana finds a secret admirer in a boy named Byron (Faris). However, Byron is a former test subject for one of LuthorCorp's projects run by Lionel Luthor. After an encounter with Byron's parents, Clark and Lana come to the conclusion that Byron is being abused but instead finds out why, when exposed to sunlight, Byron is a potential killing machine.
In physical education class, during a swim race, Clark's opponent suddenly drowns in the water. Clark pulls him out of the pool, only to find that his opponent has suddenly aged 60 years between the time he drowned and the time he was pulled out. Clark and Chloe investigate the death and it leads them to a long trail of similar events left behind by another student, Chrissy Parker (Lawson), over the course of more than eighty years.
Meanwhile, the Kent farm is in financial trouble but Jonathan asks Martha not to seek help from her father. Eager to know why his grandfather and his father cannot get along, Clark tries repeatedly to reunite them.
Also, Lana discovers a photo of her mother with an unidentified man. She finds out that her parents were separated for a short time once, and that she was born shortly after they got back together, leading her to believe that the unidentified man may be her father.
A woman named Rachel Dunleavy (Brown) shows up at Clark's school claiming to be his biological mother. Clark finds out the agency that handled his adoption was founded by Lionel Luthor. He confronts his father, who reveals his past history with Lionel the day of the meteor showers. Determined to get a hold of Clark, Dunleavy confronts Lex about Clark and tells him that she is his mother, which would make Clark Lex's brother. Dunleavy eventually kidnaps Lex and threatens to kill him if Lionel fails to reveal that Clark's adoption was a sham in a public press conference. Meanwhile, Lana finds her biological father, Henry Small (Cassidy), and confronts him, only to find out that he is not interested in her.
After his aunt dumped him because of money problems, Ryan (Kelley) frantically phones Clark for help while being held against his will in a laboratory that is performing experiments on him. Clark manages to rescue Ryan but he soon finds out that despite all his efforts and his abilities, he may not be able to save Ryan from something much bigger.
Ian (Thomas), a straight-A classmate of Clark's, starts to date Lana, but, he also appears to be dating Chloe seemingly at the same time. Clark soon finds out that he is dating them both at the same time, literally, down to the minute. Faced with multiple versions of Ian and a declining sense of trust from both Chloe and Lana (who both think Clark is being jealous in warning them about Ian), Clark must find a way to save the lives of two of his closest friends. Meanwhile, Lex attends an anger management session after smashing up a meter maid's car because of a parking ticket. There, he meets Dr. Helen Bryce (Vaugier), who is also treating Jonathan Kent for a broken leg.
A foreman dies at the construction site of the new LuthorCorp offices after he had a confrontation with a local Native American, Joseph (Tootoosis), who wants to preserve the ancient caves below the area. Clark stumbles into the cave by accident and upon the Native American's grand-daughter Kyla (Feldman). He finds out that the paintings on the cave walls foretell his arrival to Earth and may not be created by the indigenous peoples after all.
After a long absence fighting overseas, Whitney (Johnson) returns to everybody's surprise and, claiming to have lost some of his memory during battle, tries to get back together with Lana, apparently not knowing about the Dear John letter she sent earlier. Not wanting to hurt him, Lana submits to his attempts to win her back but Clark has suspicions about the true identity of Whitney Fordman.
After Lex is defeated in a takeover bid by Lionel, he discovers that his mansion is full of listening devices. At Clark's house, the rift between Martha and Jonathan grows over Martha's job with Lionel. After a fight, Martha decides to go with Lionel to Metropolis over an anniversary picnic with Jonathan. Lex, meanwhile, starts a plan to bug LuthorCorp's headquarters but aborts the plan when he finds out that Martha and Lionel are unexpectedly going there as well. The abort is botched when the workers turn out to be moles who want to steal from the LuthorCorp vault; they take Lionel and Martha hostage. During this event, Martha finds out that Lionel had files on Clark and was doing an investigation on him. In addition, Jonathan and Lex decide to put aside their differences to try to save the ones they love.
Lionel is mysteriously shot at the Luthor mansion, leaving behind a huge list of suspects with various but strong motives to want him dead. The lead suspect is Jonathan, who is found unconscious in his truck with a bottle of vodka and a gun in his hand. Clark is convinced that Jonathan was framed; he and Lana ask Henry Small, a former criminal attorney, to help him out but he refuses to represent Jonathan due to some past history with Lionel.
At an unexpected rave at the caves, a nerdy student from school dies after a fall. It turns out that the cracks on the cave walls inject bugs into the necks of those who get close enough. The bugs cause the infected persons to engage in extremely risky (and life-threatening) behavior. Eventually, Pete and Chloe are infected and gets Clark to join their side by slipping him red kryptonite, leading him to make out with Chloe and hurt Lana in the process. Meanwhile, Lex hires Dr. Walden to try to translate the language found in the cave paintings.
Lex discovers that his brother Lucas (Wesley) is not dead as Lionel had claimed. It turns out that Lionel paid Lucas's way all along so he can inherit part of the Luthor assets, botching up Lex's share of it. Left penniless, Lex is forced to ask the Kents if he can stay with them. At the Luthor mansion, Lucas is dissatisfied with Lionel's plans for him and finds out that Lionel has been faking his blindness lately. Eventually, Lucas kidnaps Lex and tries to get Lionel to shoot Lex.
Martha, who earlier hid the key to the spaceship in a can of flour, buries it in the storm cellar but accidentally kicks up dust from the meteor rocks, inhaling them in the process. As a result, she gets extremely sick and is on the verge of death. Officers from the disease control department, after finding out that the substance she inhaled is unknown to the planet, quarantine the Kent farm (after Clark quickly moves the ship to Pete's house) and discover the key. Clark, who inhaled the meteor dust as well, falls sick too. Helen, the doctor who takes charge of Clark's case, manages to draw a blood sample and discovers that the sample is completely different from normal blood. Meanwhile, it is revealed that Martha is pregnant and Lex asks Helen to move in with him. In the end Lana discovers Chloe loves Clark.
Clark has a dream about flying to the cave and inserting the spaceship key into a slot on one of its walls. He wakes up in the middle of the road. After getting home, he tells Jonathan about the dream and he warns Clark against inserting the key. Later that day, Clark receives massive headaches which are apparently caused by the key; he concludes that the key was "calling out" to him, and inserts the key into the cave wall. The wall shocks him unconscious and leaves him with the ability to read the Krypton language.
At home, his telepathic firestarting powers get out of control and etches a Krypton symbol on the barn wall. After Chloe publishes a photo of the symbol, Clark is contacted by a professor named Dr. Swann (played by Christopher Reeve), who claims he can explain where the symbols are from. From Swann, Clark learns about Krypton, its demise, information about his biological parents and his alien name, Kal-El. With the new information, he manages to uncover a hidden message embedded inside the spaceship from his biological father that states his destiny as a conqueror of Earth. Meanwhile, Dr. Walden finds the octagon key and inserts it; the wall knocks him into a coma.
A classmate at school, Cyrus (Lelliot), displays abilities similar to Clark's in shop class. He finds out that Cyrus thinks he is an alien who arrived in a way similar to Clark's as well, leading him to believe that Dr. Swann was wrong when he told Clark he is the only one on Earth from Krypton. Cyrus shows Clark the transmission tower he is building to contact his alien parents as Clark starts to doubt Cyrus's claims as he receives more evidence that fail to fit in with his alleged alien roots.
After Lana is almost sexually assaulted by a college student, Andy Conners (Adamthwaite), Clark loses control and injures the boy. When the Kents are sued for punitive damages that could cost them the farm, Clark begins to question his powers while trying to find a way out of the lawsuit. Meanwhile, Helen's ex-boyfriend arrives in town intent on winning her back, but when she turns him down, he stabs her, prompting Lex to take the law into his own hands.
A group of thieves hijack a LuthorCorp van and steal shipments of Kryptonite. Clark stumbles upon the robbery and is no match for the culprits. It turns out that they are also taking and manufacturing liquid Kryptonite, which leads to enhanced strength. Meanwhile, Lana finds out that Jennifer Small is seeking a divorce from Henry Small. Lionel offers to fund the Torch and a position at the Daily Planet if Chloe does an investigative report on Clark.
After a movie night at the Talon, Lana starts to see an old childhood friend named Emily (Ferland) who died 6 years ago. She is convinced that she is seeing ghosts because Emily can appear and disappear at will. Clark sees differently -- she is simply moving extremely fast, in the same way he can. It turns out that Emily's father has been cloning humans with the help of liquid Kryptonite, using his deceased daughter as a template. But there's a flaw with the Emily clone -- she has no sense of morality and no conscience, which eventually puts Lana in grave danger. Meanwhile, Lex prepares for his wedding with Helen.
Dr. Walden wakes up from his coma and tells Lex and Lionel that Clark is an alien and must be destroyed. Meanwhile, a romantic encounter between Clark and Lana hints at a promising future, but after Chloe finds out they are together, Lana pulls back. Clark hears a strange voice calling from the storm cellar.

Clark has exiled himself to Metropolis. With all morals lost under the influence of red kryptonite, Clark has been engaging in many criminal activities to fund his personal expenses. With everyone still searching for Clark, it may take more than just kryptonite to stop him.
Lex is found, still alive, on a deserted island. Brought back home, he undergoes several psychiatric evaluations. After learning of his father's hand in the death of his grandparents, Lex suffers a "psychotic break" and is institutionalized by Lionel. Lex is accused of murder and as a deal with the FBI agrees to provide evidence against his father. With the help of Chloe, Lex is able to provide a case against his father and have him sent to jail to await trial.
Clark and Lana's relationship ends faster than it begins, Clark meets Perry White, learns more about his biological father and his friends, loses his sight, and gains a new ability. Finally, sacrificing himself to save his father, Clark agrees to fulfill the destiny that Jor-El wants; pulled into the Kawatchi Cave wall, he is transported into space. Lionel takes care of some loose ends, to acquit himself of the allegations of murder, by having Lex and Chloe removed from the equation.
Under the influence of red kryptonite and living in Metropolis, Clark gets involved with a crime lord named Morgan Edge (Hauer) who hires him to break into LuthorCorp. Meanwhile, desperate to put his family back together, Jonathan takes drastic measures to bring Clark home. At the mansion, Lionel accuses Helen (Vaugier) of killing Lex.
After Jor-El (Stamp) grants Jonathan temporary superpowers, he and Clark engage in a destructive battle atop the LuthorCorp building. Meanwhile, Lex returns home and must determine whether it was Lionel or Helen who arranged his plane crash.
Clark discovers a teenage boy, Van McNulty (Metcalfe), is hunting people affected by the kryptonite rocks and the killer's next target is Lex. Clark uses his powers to save Lex, but is caught off guard when the killer learns his weakness and manufactures kryptonite bullets.
Clark dreams he is being pursued by a frightened young girl (Isabelle) who needs his help. However, after he discovers she is actually a comatose neighbor who should have woken up years ago, he enlists Lana's help to uncover the truth - which puts Lana in grave danger. Meanwhile, Lionel demands that Lex undergo a full psychological evaluation before he hires him.
Perry White (McKean), a once- promising journalist whose career was destroyed by Lionel Luthor, arrives in Smallville in search of alien stories for a tabloid news show. In spite of being constantly inebriated, Perry believes he has witnessed Clark using his extraordinary speed, so he devises a dangerous scheme to expose Clark's superpowers. Meanwhile, Lex learns that Perry has powerful incriminating evidence of Lionel's shady past.
Lana's great uncle, who was convicted of murdering his wife forty years ago, shows her a picture of the man he believes really killed her aunt, and she is shocked to discover the drifter looks just like Clark. Sure that the man is Jor-El, Clark's investigation leads him to a kryptonian medallion that allows him to see bits of the past - and the life that Jor-El started for him long before he arrived on Earth.
Clark is suspicious when Lana suddenly becomes attracted to a fellow student and begins to act rebelliously, which eventually lands her in jail. Clark's suspicions are confirmed when he discovers Lana's new boyfriend has magnetic powers that can move objects and alter human emotions, but when he tries to free Lana from the paranormal hold that is controlling her, she tries to kill him. Meanwhile, Lex discovers Chloe has been delving into Lionel's past and tries to get her to join forces against his dad.
Lex locates Morgan Edge (Bergin) and gets him to admit to dirty dealings with Lionel, but before Lex can take it to the authorities, someone tries to kill him at the mansion. Barely surviving, Lex flees and asks Clark for help. However, when Clark returns to the mansion to investigate he finds nothing amiss, and begins to wonder if it really happened, especially after Lionel announces Lex has had a psychotic break and must be institutionalized.
Lex attempts to enlist Clark's help to escape from the hospital, but when Clark refuses he attempts to escape by himself. His resulting capture forces Lionel to send him in for electroshock therapy to erase his memory. Unknown to Clark, three of his old foes, who have also been institutionalised, are planning to steal and use his powers to escape. Meanwhile, Lana meets a mysterious new stranger, Adam Knight (Somerhalder), in the hospital.
Attempting to stop a robbery, Clark is temporarily blinded when he shoots off a burst of heat vision that is reflected back into his eyes by a piece of kryptonite. He soon realizes that his body has developed super-hearing to compensate for his lack of sight. However, as it was in the beginning with his other gifts, Clark doesn't quite have his new power under control.
Clark and Lana each make an attempt on Chloe's life for unknown reasons after they receive a mysterious e-mail from the Summerholt Institute. Clark must discover the source of these e-mails after Chloe reveals she has uncovered proof that they are doing mind-control research at the lab and realizes they must be trying to kill her in order to prevent her from writing an expos. Meanwhile, Lana decides to rent the apartment above the caf to Adam even though she feels he is hiding something dangerous about his past.
Clark discovers that his schoolmate Jordan can foresee the future death of anyone he touches. But Clark is horrified when Jordan tells him he "sees" Lana dying in a fire in the next few days. Jordan also tells Clark that he does not die like everyone else he has seen. Meanwhile, suspicious of his behavior, Chloe investigates Adam's background and discovers some disturbing news.
After Pete refuses to blow a street race, the thugs that run it threaten his life, so he asks Clark to use his powers to stop them. Furious that Pete would put himself in this position, Clark must figure out a way to save Pete and still protect his secret. Meanwhile, Jonathan begins to suffer the consequences of his deal with Jor-El.
Clark is forced to use his powers in front of Alicia (Carter), a new girl at school, but he is surprised to find out she has powers of her own. The two develop a bond through their shared secret, but things turn ugly after Alicia becomes obsessive about sharing Clark with anyone else - especially Lana. Meanwhile, Lana asks Lex to "get rid of" Adam.
While his father is awaiting surgery, Clark befriends a young boy, Garrett, whose brother Vince(Tahmoh Penikett) just died from liver failure. However, everyone is shocked when Vince shows up at the hospital alive and seemingly well - until his liver starts failing again. In a desperate attempt to keep his brother alive, Garrett straps a Kryptonite bomb to himself and demands that Vince be given Jonathan's liver or he will blow up the building.
Clark receives a panicked call from Lana and hears a gunshot before the line goes dead, but when he arrives at the Talon he is stunned to discover she is alive and well. Clark realizes the phone call came from the next day and that Adam is the one who will shoot Lana. Upon taking Clark to the Luthorcorp lab where Adam was being kept, Lex finds all of the staff murdered and suspects his father is behind it.
When Jonathan begins to act strangely, Clark believes Jor-El is sending Jonathan messages through the key and is the cause for his father's withdrawal from the family. Clark goes down to the caves to confront his biological father but Lionel catches him there and begins putting the pieces together - leading him straight to Dr. Swann (Reeve). As the two billionaires face off, a deal is struck and Lionel's true motives are revealed.
When Chloe accidentally inhales a mysterious krypto-gas, she discovers it acts as a truth serum to anyone who comes in contact with her and decides to take advantage of her new power by going to the Kents to find out Clark's secret. However, her new power comes with fatal consequences and Clark must find an antidote before she discovers the truth about him or, worse, dies.
Believing that key information about his father's past was lost when his memory was erased, Lex decides to join an experimental program with Dr. Garner (Cummins) to regain the information so he can turn his father over to the FBI. Knowing that Lex will discover his secret if he regains his memory, Clark tries to stop him but is caught by Lionel and the doctor and exposed to the same radical treatment so that Lionel can solve the mystery of Clark's past.
Clark has a flashback from when he was a baby, when he was sent away from Krypton. He hears his parents talking, and after confiding in Martha that he is sad that he forgot his parents, learns that from his mother that his first word was 'Lara'- his biological mother's name.
When a Kawatche Indian, Jeremiah Holdsclaw (Arcand), steals a mythic knife from the caves, he is bestowed with superpowers similar to Clark's, causing the young man to believe he is the legendary Naman, "the man who fell from the stars." Clark learns the Kawatche legend foretold of a knife that could kill Naman and sets out to reclaim it before the young Indian can use it on Lionel.
Clark decides to tell Lana his secret so they can finally be together. Meanwhile, an errant FBI agent kidnaps and tortures Pete to try and force him to reveal Clark's secret. Also, Lex panics after the FBI gives him 24 hours to turn over information on his father or face jail time, but help arrives from an unexpected source.
Things come to a head in Smallville when Kara (Palicki), a beautiful girl with superpowers, who claims to be from Krypton, comes to entice Clark to fulfill his destiny. Overwhelmed by her appearance, Clark turns to his parents for advice but is shocked when the girl forces Jonathan to finally reveal the deal he made with Jor-El. Also, Clark makes a discovery that ultimately redefines his relationship with Lex, and Clark's relationship with Lana takes a final turn. Meanwhile, Lex turns the tables on Lionel with the FBI.

Clark has returned, though he isn't his usual self. Clark is "reprogrammed", by Jor-El, to seek out 3 stones from around the world. The stones are the key to the ultimate knowledge of the universe..
Lois Lane comes to Smallville, to search for the truth behind her cousin Chloe's death. Lois finds an amnesiac Clark, returned to Smallville after a 3 month absence, and takes him to the hospital. Lana, still in Paris and with a new love interest, is researching an ancient martyr and witch, Countess Marguerite Isobel Theroux, whom she is linked to via her bloodline. Jonathan lies in a coma, with Martha by his side; Lionel awaits his trial.
Martha brings the real Clark back by using a mysterious black kryptonite that changes "Kal-El" back into her "Clark". In that moment, Jonathan wakes up from his coma. Afterwards Lois and Clark find out Lex saved Chloe from the explosion and she makes it in time for Lionel's trial.
Clark decides that this year will be the year of Clark, and he will not be worried with what Jor-El has in store for him anymore. Clark goes out for the football team, experiences difficulty in his relationship with Lana, sees a relationship with Lex begin to fully crumble, meets future superheroes and old obsessions, and battles witches from the 17th century just in time to graduate from Smallville High. Clark's true destiny is also revealed to him by the season's end, and a second meteor shower comes to Smallville.
Clark returns to Smallville re-programmed as Kal-El. Intent on fulfilling his destiny, Kal-El takes to the skies to steal a powerful kryptonian stone. Determined to save her son, Martha turns to Dr. Swann's emissary, Bridgette Crosby (Kidder), and learns about a surprising new form of kryptonite. Meanwhile, Lois Lane comes to town to investigate the murder of her cousin Chloe. Also, Lana returns from Paris with a new attitude and a new boyfriend, Jonathan lies in a coma, and Lionel faces a grim new life in prison.
Clark and Lois Lane investigate Chloe's apparent murder, but are stopped by an army officer, General Sam Lane (Ironside), who turns out to be Lois' father. Lois suspects that Sam knows more about Chloe's death than he will admit, and Clark discovers that Sam has recently been in contact with Lex. Jason arrives from Paris and convinces Lana to continue their relationship. Suspecting that Chloe is still alive, Lionel sends an assassin with the power to morph his limbs into metallic weapons to keep Chloe from testifying against him.
Clark faces a surprising new foe in the form of a shy high school girl, Abby Fine (Brown), who turns to plastic surgery to enhance her looks and boost her popularity. However, things go awry when she discovers that her kryptonite-enhanced beauty causes harm to anyone she kisses - and she decides her next victim will be Lana. Meanwhile, Jason and Lana continue to hide their relationship from Clark.
Clark joins the football team at school and is immediately given the starting quarterback position after the old quarterback tries to kill the new assistant coach Jason. Chloe drinks a glass of team water and becomes devoted to Clark. Jason also drinks from the water and attacks Clark. Curious about the behavior change in both Chloe and Jason, Clark and Lois investigate and discover that the cheerleaders are poisoning the teams' water with kryptonite, turning the players into Stepford-like boyfriends.
After Jonathan's wallet is stolen, Clark tracks down the thief, but is stunned when he cannot catch him. The thief, Bart Allen (Gallner), later shows up at the farm and tries to talk Clark into leaving Smallville for a life on the road together, flexing their super powers. Meanwhile, Lex buys a priceless framed manuscript with Kryptonian symbols and Clark learns that it contains a mysterious hidden map. However, when Bart steals the manuscript from Lex, he inadvertently puts Clark's life in danger and must make the decision whether to save Clark or himself.
Clark hears a painful ringing sound in his ears and is drawn to the prison where Lionel is being held. When he sees Lionel attempt to stab Lex with a strange glowing stone, Clark grabs for the stone causing the two men to switch bodies. Learning his new body has super powers, Lionel immediately begins wreaking havoc on Smallville. Trapped behind bars without his powers, Clark must figure out a way to get his body and powers back in order to save his friends and family.
Chloe is drawn into an underground gambling ring at school run by foreign exchange student Mikhail Mxyzptlk and wins big on a football game despite Mxyzptlk using special powers to control all the players - including Clark. Mxyzptlk's power causes Clark to injure another player, spurring him to get to the bottom on who was controlling the football game. Meanwhile, Lex threatens Mxyzptlk with deportation but Mxyzptlk convinces him to make a wager. With so much riding on the championship, Chloe puts herself into harm's way by discovering Mxyzptlk's weakness.
After Lana reads from a spell book written in the 1600s, she, Lois and Chloe become possessed by witches that had been burned at the stake. The three witches have come back to seek revenge and search for the powerful Kryptonian stones, wreaking havoc on the town in the process. Clark attempts to stop the witches but they strip him of his powers and force him to reveal the location of the stone he hid in the cave.
After Lex is accused of killing a young woman, Clark sets out to prove his innocence and turns to an unlikely source for help - Lionel. Swearing he is a changed man, Lionel offers Clark insight into the crime but he asks for something in return. Meanwhile, Lana meets Jason's mother, Genevieve Teague (Seymour), and has a vivid flashback of the incident in Paris, leading her to suspect that Jason's mother was there when she got her tattoo.
Lex's secret experiment at Luthorcorp goes awry and causes a dangerous toxin to be released into Smallville. Those infected by the toxin, including Clark, Lana, Chloe, Lex, and Jason, imagine their greatest fears come true and then fall into a coma. Desperate to find a cure, Clark heats up the vials containing a cure while Lex is not looking. With the cure heated to the correct temperature Lex does something unexpected with the unproven antidote.

In Luthor Mansion, Lionel goes into convulsions, in front of Lex, and the third stone burns its way out of Lionel's pocket. Lex helps Lana escape Smallville after the death of Genevieve Teague, but takes shocking action to get one of the stones away from her. While Lex is helping Lana, Clark steals the stone from Lex's vault with a little help from Chloe. After uniting the three Kryptonian artifacts and being transported to the Arctic, Clark lets the newly formed crystal do all the work, and shortly afterward, the Fortress of Solitude emerges. After entering the Fortress, Clark begins the task of fulfilling his true destiny and stopping the coming darkness with the help of his Kryptonian birth father, Jor-El. However, the recent meteor shower heralds the arrival of two disciples of the malevolent General Zod, and they quickly lay siege to Smallville in their search for Kal-El.
Chloe's mysterious disappearing act in the Kawatche Caves and reappearance in the Yukon has Lex growing ever suspicious of Clark. Clark meets one of his college teachers, Professor Milton Fine, who has a few secrets of his own. Aquaman and Cyborg stop by Smallville, and Chloe gets a job at the Daily Planet, starting at the bottom (literally). Clark becomes human for a brief time, allowing him to finally be honest with Lana and have a real relationship with her, and Jonathan and Lex run for the State Senate. Clark moves increasingly closer to the hero he will one day become, and a shocking death leaves everyone in tears.
Clark receives help from an unlikely source, and Professor Fine's true motives are revealed, leaving Clark to make a decision that could affect all of humanity. Having been transported to the Fortress of Solitude, Clark is greeted by Jor-El, who informs him he cannot return to Smallville, instead he must stay and prepare to save the planet. Also, transported to the Fortress, Chloe is unable to handle the sub-zero temperature of the Arctic and collapses inside the Fortress, begging Clark to use his powers to save her. Jor-El forbids him to leave, but finally acquiesces, telling Clark he must return before sunset or there will be dire consequences. Meanwhile, Lana is horrified when she sees two Kryptonian aliens emerge from a spaceship discovered in the remnants of the meteor shower. The two aliens are searching for Kal-El. Clark returns and traps the two in an alternate dimension, but loses his powers when the sun goes down. He then goes to Lana and carries her to the hospital. Lex grabs the ship from the crater and takes it back to Luthorcorp. But something black leaks out of the ship and takes human form.
Jor-El strips Clark of his powers, making him human. Delighted to finally be "normal," Clark pursues a relationship with Lana sans secrets. However, after Lana, Jonathan and Martha are taken hostage by three thugs, Lee (Johnson) and the Twins (Brad and Todd Mann), Clark must figure out how to save his family without his super powers. Using his now-mortal wits, he confounds the thugs and saves the day, not before confronting Lex and exposing his involvement in the affair. The episode ends with Clark and Lana consummating their love.
Chloe is warned by Gabriel (Johnny Lewis), a former school newspaper worker, that he is going to set off a missile and obliterate all of Smallville. Still stripped of his super powers, Clark confronts Gabriel and ends up getting shot. In the hospital, Clark flatlines and his fate is left in Jor-El's hands. Meanwhile, Lex believes Lionel has the key to open the spaceship. Clark ends up being resurrected back to his Kryptonian body by Jor-El, who is using Lionel's body as a vessel, but at the cost of the life of someone he loves. Newly empowered, Clark returns to Smallville, dismantles the rocket in space and saves the town.
A summer beach party at Crater Lake takes a dramatic turn when Lois hits her head while jumping into the lake. Before Clark can rescue her, a mysterious swimmer, Arthur Curry (Aquaman[1]), comes to her rescue, out-swimming Clark and leaving him baffled. During his first lecture at University Professor Fine, (the human form that dripped from the ship at Luthorcorp) tells Clark that Lex is behind a covert operation manufacturing weapons. AC attempts to break into the Luthorcorp Marine Center in an attempt to destroy one of the weapons and is captured. While Lex is demonstrating his weapon to several high ranking military officials Clark breaks into the lab and saves AC. Together they destroy the weapon thereby ruining the deal Lex has been brokering. Searching for answers, Chloe convinces Lois to go undercover as a stripper, but things take a dangerous turn when Lois is kidnapped by a diplomat's son who intends to sell her into slavery.

The silver kryptonite makes him believe that Chloe is going to reveal his secret, Jonathan is scheming against him with Lionel and Lex and Lana are having a secret relationship. Chloe and the Kents frantically search for a cure, but it is Professor Fine who comes to Clark's rescue - but not without an agenda.
After Martha contracts a strange disease and is given hours to live, Clark turns to Professor Fine (Smallville's interpretation of the familiar Superman villain Brainiac), who convinces Clark that Jor-El is the one responsible for her illness and the only way to save her is to destroy the Fortress of Solitude, separating Jor-El's link. However, once the two arrive at the Fortress, Fine tries to free Zod and kill Clark, revealing himself not to be just a mere Kryptonian as he claimed.
Lex considers whether to find or create damaging information against Jonathan to upset his Senatorial race...information that may harm Clark and Martha as well. But when Lex is shot, he falls into a coma and is visited by the ghost of his mother (Down), who shows him what his life could be like if he frees himself from his father. In this life, Lex is married to Lana, and they are expecting a second child. But, will this be enough to pull Lex from the dark path he is taking? Meanwhile, Chloe persuades Clark to play Santa, and to deliver gifts to those less fortunate.
Jonathan's life is threatened by a mysterious source, who urges him to drop out of the senate race. Later, Clark finds his dad beaten and hung from the rafters. He later discovers that Lex's followers, primarily Samantha Drake (Burgstede), are determined to do anything to see that Lex wins the election. While escaping to the panic room in the mansion, Lex takes a bullet meant for Lana. Clark discovers Lana has been researching the spaceship with Lex and fears she is close to discovering his secret. Meanwhile, the Kents do not see eye-to-eye on campaign financing. The corrupt officers shoot, and kill, the Sheriff of Smallville.
Clark is finally willing to reveal his secret to Lana, but could there be consequences? Season 6 begins with Clark still stuck in the Phantom Zone without his powers and at the mercy of the criminals his father sent there. Martha and Lois crash land in the Arctic near the Fortress of Solitude; Chloe and Lionel are dragged into the streets of Metropolis by an unruly mob; Lex/Zod and Lana stand by and watch as Metropolis burns to the ground. Clark gets a little help from one of Jor-El's assistants, Raya (Hutton), in leaving the Phantom Zone. Zod informs Lana that she must sire him an heir, or die with the rest of the human race. Martha finds Clark's Fortress, and Jor-El instructs her on how to kill Zod. Meanwhile, Chloe runs into former flame Jimmy Olsen (Ashmore), a new intern photographer at the Daily Planet. Clark returns from the Phantom Zone and confronts Lex/Zod. After a fierce battle, with Lex/Zod gaining the upper hand, Clark is ordered to swear allegiance or watch everyone he loves die. Clark tricks Lex/Zod and traps him inside the House of El crystal that he received from Raya. After coming to terms with all these recent events, Clark realizes that "everything is changing" in the world he knew, and that he must learn to find his place. It also becomes apparent that Clark was not the only one to escape the Phantom Zone, as a spirit is seen speeding out of the Iguazu Falls.
With Zod banished to the Phantom Zone, Clark spends his nights clearing rubble and helping the rebuilding effort of Metropolis. By constantly overexerting himself, and possibly having been infected in the Phantom Zone, Clark catches a cold. An inadvertent sneeze blows the barn door off its hinges and across town, nearly striking Lois. While seeking the truth behind the falling door, Lois discovers a new love for investigative journalism. Lex is kidnapped and tortured due to his transgressions while possessed by Zod. Oliver Queen, one of Lex's old classmates, moves to Metropolis from Star City, keeping his true intentions a mystery. Lana's trust in Lex is put to the test when she discovers Lex's surveillance tapes in the mansion including one of her undressing. Lana discovers where Lex is being held, and, after a little coaxing by Chloe, Clark learns to utilize his new ability to save both Lex and Lana.
Chloe and Jimmy stake out a "Make-out Point" to check on a tip that "strange things" were happening there. A scream is heard from the nearby woods, interrupting an intimate moment between the two. They investigate and find a girl dead in the woods, and her boyfriend presumably kidnapped. Meanwhile, Lex throws a costume charity ball to help raise funds for the restoration process after "Dark Thursday". Lana has conflicting feelings about trusting Lex, and she confides in Chloe. After mistaking Oliver Queen for an errand boy, Lois pays him a visit to apologize and ends up becoming Oliver's date to Lex's charity ball. Clark learns that others have escaped the Phantom Zone when he and Chloe discover that the men being kidnapped are being used to harbor the seeds of a female alien plant. With a little help from Chloe, Clark confronts the escaped criminal, Gloria (McDonald). As things become serious between Lana and Lex, romance begins to blossom between Chloe and Jimmy, and between Lois and Oliver.
Lionel hosts a party for Martha and her bid for the U.S. Senate, and he loans her a priceless necklace. A mysterious thief crashes the party and steals the necklace from Martha. After a confrontation with Lois, the thief makes a getaway, but not before Lois grabs a small ring from his neck. Clark finally meets Oliver when he goes to Metropolis to find the necklace. Lois believes she's landed a new front page story with the Inquisitor, but her plans are spoiled when the thief comes back for the ring. With a little help from Lionel, Clark manages to confront the Green Arrow and he eventually discovers his identity. Also, Lex's darker side seems to be influencing Lana, as she blackmails one of his employees from "contracting out" to Lionel.
Lex and Oliver attend their 10 year reunion, where the animosity between them is obviously rising as talk of Lex's deceased best friend, Duncan (Hodgson), brings tension. When Oliver's old friends begin to die one by one, right in front of him, he starts an investigation into who is responsible. Meanwhile, Clark and Chloe learn of an incident in which a mysterious individual destroys a town in India, and Clark asks for Oliver's satellite images of "Dark Thursday". In return, Clark agrees to help Oliver find out if Lex is behind the deaths of his friends. After talking to Lionel, Clark learns that Duncan is not dead, but has been in a vegetative state, receiving different treatments in the aim of restoring his consciousness. Lois and Clark discover that the latest set of treatments involves a kryptonite solution, which enables Duncan to use astral projection to get revenge on those he felt were responsible for his condition. Clark disrupts his mental projection, by setting off an arrow that releases an electromagnetic pulse, and Duncan's physical brain dies. Meanwhile, Clark learns from the satellite images that Raya escaped the Phantom Zone and is now on Earth.
An escaped phantom, "Baern", takes possession of a young boy's body (Bow Wow), and sets his sights on finding Kal-El. As Clark is studying the satellite images he received from Oliver, he gets an unexpected visitor, Raya. The escaped "Zoner" locates Clark and arrives at the Kent Farm, but, after some resistance from Raya, is forced to retreat. Lana starts a game of "cat and mouse" with Lex when she gets her hands on the Kryptonian "black box." Clark and Raya stop Baern, while Lex and Lana's relationship begins to strain over the box, even after Baern destroys the box by absorbing its energy.
Things heat up between Lois and Oliver, but when a couple is being mugged at gunpoint Oliver must bail on Lois to save them. During the struggle, Oliver is shot in the chest. When Clark checks in on Oliver, Oliver has no visible signs of being shot and is acting very abrasive. Following his departure, Clark sees Oliver injecting an unknown substance into himself after he cuts his hand on broken glass. Oliver's research facility has created a drug that allows the user to heal virtually any wound in a matter of seconds, but it has a side effect which may trigger anger and irrationality in its user. After learning that Lex co-opted Oliver's scientist, Clark and Chloe go to the lab only to find all the drugs missing and the lead scientist dead. Clark sets out to find Lex before Oliver can get to him. Clark arrives in time to save Lex by using the drug, and Oliver learns that there is a line that should not be crossed when it comes to justice. Also, Lana makes the shocking discovery that she is pregnant.
After level 33.1 patient Bronson (Toufexis) breaches the mansion, Lex and Lana move to the panic room. Before they can reach it, Lex is transported to another frequency plane. Clark learns of another escaped Phantom Zone criminal (Batista) and heads to Seattle to find out more. When he arrives he learns that the criminal rips the bones from his victims and devours them. As Lex watches from another plane, Chloe and Lana search his computer for a security feed that could show what happened to him. Chloe discovers another person was in the room when Lex disappeared, and at the same time Lana receives a call from Bronson. He informs Lana that Lex has been experimenting on meteor infected people at the secret level 33.1. Clark realizes the House of El crystal doesn't work on Phantom Zone criminals that are not actually "phantoms" when he confronts the escaped "Zoner." After Lana learns where Lex is, and that he can hear her, she returns to the mansion and informs him that she's pregnant. Bronson tries to show Lana the 33.1 facility, but when Bronson escaped the facility was moved. Bronson then holds Lana captive and threatens to kill her if Lex doesn't tell him where he moved the other level 33.1 patients. Jimmy triangulates their positions and pulls Lex, Lana and Bronson out of the alternate frequency, but not before Lex kills Bronson. Clark gets some aid from a shadowy source as he battles the "Zoner." Clark's only clue to his identity were Oreo cookies left behind as the figure seemingly flies away. Lex, after discussing Lana's pregnancy and level 33.1, proposes to Lana.
Jed McNally (Novak) is forcing illegal immigrants from Mexico to work on his farm in Smallville. Javier (Posey), who has come to Kansas to search for his mother, manages to escape, but his friend get pulled into the ground during the attempt. Clark finds Javier hiding in the Kent barn and agrees to help him. Clarks questions of the other workers leads him to discover a mass burial ground underneath McNally's farm. Chloe connects the farm to Luthorcorp and Clark confronts Lex about the murdered workers. McNally is arrested but escapes by burrowing into the ground. Chloe and Jimmy locate Javier's mother and Clark and Javier are attacked by McNally enroute to the Kent farm. Clark defeats McNally and Javier is reunited with his mother. Lex has McNally imprisoned in the newly located 33.1.
Linda Lake, a gossip columnist with the ability to morph into water, overhears Lana tell Chloe that she is apprehensive about marrying Lex, because she still has feelings for Clark. Clark gets a big surprise when he goes to Lex's mansion to talk to Lana, and Lex informs him that Lana is carrying his child. Thanks to some images taken by Jimmy, Lois correctly believes that Oliver is actually the Green Arrow. Lex hires Linda to find out everything she can about Lana and Clark, and, while spying on Chloe and Clark, she learns that Clark is actually an alien. Clark dresses up as Green Arrow, and Oliver shows up just as Lois kisses Green Arrow and realizes that he's not Ollie. Chloe and Linda get into a fight, when Chloe discovers her new story about Clark. In the struggle outside, Linda is hit by Lana's car spraying her liquid-self all over. Also, Lana finally accepts Lex's proposal.
Chloe discovers that kryptonite-infected patients at Belle Reeve are being transported to an undisclosed location. When she confronts the doctor involved, he pulls a gun but she is saved when an unknown individual speeds through and knocks the doctor out. Clark goes to investigate and learns that it was Bart Allen. Oliver decides that a vacation will be good for he and Lois, and the two plan to leave after Oliver gets his affairs in order. Lionel warns Lex of another Luthorcorp break-in, one that held information about level 33.1, and Lex shows no concern, even showing him a picture of a glimpse of Bart in a high security image. After they leave Bart speeds in and downloads Lex's computer's hard drive, and then delivers the copy to Oliver. Clark learns that Oliver is using Bart to attack Luthorcorp, but it is too late when Lex captures Bart when he tried to hack into level 33.1's computer system. When he arrives at Oliver's, Clark learns that Arthur Curry and Victor Stone are also working for Ollie. Clark and Chloe figure out where 33.1 is, and Clark sets out to rescue Bart as Chloe lets Oliver know where he's going. Unfortunately, Clark stumbles into a vault for refining kryptonite and becomes locked inside. Oliver, Victor and Arthur infiltrate level 33.1, rescue Clark, who in turn rescues Bart, and together they bring the entire facility down with explosives. Oliver is forced to break-up with Lois when he tells her that he is leaving Metropolis for good. Arthur and Victor inform Clark that Lex is dispatching other level 33.1's all over the world to experiment on anyone with abilities, and Oliver and his team leave Clark in search of their next target.
Clark is attacked in his barn by a Zoner, but when he wakes up he finds himself in a sanitarium, and without his powers. Dr. Hudson informs Clark that his entire life, as he believes it, has been nothing more than a fabrication he created to cope with his biological parents' death in the meteor shower. A patient who identifies himself as being from Mars, warns Clark not to trust anyone; he is quickly sedated and taken away. When Clark escapes the sanitarium he finds that everything has changed. Lana and Nell own the Kent farm, Martha has married Lionel, Lex is in a wheelchair, and Chloe was also a patient with him. Dr. Hudson shows Clark that his imaginary world was created from bits and pieces of the real world, like his "Jorel" hand soap, and fellow patients Arthur Curry and Victor Stone. The patient who claims to be from Mars returns to tell Clark that he must kill Dr. Hudson, because Hudson is actually a phantom attempting to take over Clark's body. Clark fights back and begins to strangle Hudson; in the real world the phantom is pulled from Clark's body via another crystal. Clark awakens to find the mysterious patient from his hallucinations standing in front of him. As Chloe arrives, the unidentified man, with his glowing red eyes, flies away.
During a Valentine's Day party at the Talon, Lois is given a tube of lipstick laced with red kryptonite. Designed to cause her to fall in-love with the first person she sees, Lois spies Clark in a mirror while applying the lipstick and falls for him. Lana and Chloe mend their friendship, and Chloe agrees to be Lana's maid of honor. Clark informs Chloe that Lois is acting like she is in-love with him, and he thinks that she may have been drugged. Lois finds Clark and the Daily Planet, and when she kisses him, she transfers the red kryptonite traces to Clark. Newly released "Kal" immediately shows Lois his abilities. Inside Oliver's apartment, Kal notices the Luthor engagement party invitation and decides to crash the event. Chloe and Jimmy track down the woman that gave Lois the lipstick, and Jimmy picks up the kryptonite counteractant. Clark crashes the engagement dinner, and, after revealing that Lana is pregnant to everyone, takes Lana away. Jimmy sprays Lois with the counteractant, which immediately stops the effect. Kal tries to convince Lana that he loves her, and that she still loves him (Clark). When Lex arrives at the barn, he and Clark start fighting. Lex stabs Clark just as Martha brings over a kryptonite rock to eliminate the red kryptonite affects. Before she leaves, Lana notices the chisel Lex stabbed Clark with is bent. Jimmy's mistrust of Chloe's feelings for Clark cause the two of them to suspend their relationship. It is hinted that Lana's pregnancy may not have been natural, and Lana's suspicions of Clark continue to grow.
Someone is watching Lana, and they send her a picture of her in her bedroom. Lex has the room checked out, but Lana doesn't mention the picture to him because it shows the chisel he used to stab Clark. Lex takes off on a business trip, and Lana stays with Chloe. Lana shares the image with Chloe, who immediately informs Clark that Lana is getting closer to figuring out his secret. Lana's stalker sneaks into the Talon and delivers a gift which indicates that he is planning to kill her. Lex orders his guards to take Lana to Luthorcorp, but Lana decides the best place to go is Clark's. While staying in Clark's room, Lana takes the opportunity to search through his things to give her more clues about his secret. The stalker kills one of the body guards, and Lana is taken to the hospital after a fall down the stairs. Placed in an old wing, for security reasons, the stalker, believed to a paparazzi, finds her and begins taking dozens of pictures. Clark shows up and throws him against the wall. While being escorted out, Lex's guard kills the paparazzi, and then takes Lana back to the mansion. It's revealed that Lex's guard is the real stalker, and he pursues Lana to the roof of the mansion. During the struggle, they both fall through a skylight, but Clark catches Lana before she hits the floor. The episode ends with Lex visiting Clark in the barn to give him an invitation for his and Lana's wedding.
During Lana's bachelorette party, Chloe suspects Daniel Kim, an employee giving Lana some bowling tips, to have kryptonite enhanced abilities. Later, Tobias, a young man who was blinded in the last meteor shower, arrives at the bowling alley and identifies Daniel as being infected by the meteor rocks. Chloe witnesses several men kidnap Daniel outside, but, when she and Clark investigate, Daniel returns to work the next morning with no memory of the event. After a visit from Clark and Chloe, Tobias calls Dr. Bethany to report that he's "found another one." While Clark is interrogating Dr. Bethany about what he overheared, Chloe is kidnapped and taken to a medical facility. Suspected of being infected by the meteor rocks, Chloe is strapped to a table and a DNA sample is taken. Chloe arrives back at the Talon, with no memory of the event. Clark has her try and hack into a laptop he stole from Dr. Bethany. Lex demands that Dr. Bethany bring Tobias to him after he learns of the stolen laptop. While visiting Tobias, Lana is informed that Clark was not infected by the meteors as she believes. Chloe hacks the laptop and finds a GPS tracker for kryptonite infected people. One by one, each of the tracking devices begin to change from green to red. Realizing that each person is dying, Chloe convinces Clark to x-ray her and then use his heat vision to cut a hole in her shoulder to remove her GPS locator. Dr. Bethany arrives to kill Tobias, but Lana is there to prevent it. After a brief struggle, Lana holds Dr. Bethany at gun point, as he prepares to fire his electric tazer, designed to immediately stop the heart, on Tobias. Clark speeds in, swats Lana's bullet away and reflects Dr. Bethany's electric stream back toward him. Afterward, Lana confronts Clark about the possibility of him being infected by the meteor rocks, and reassures him that he wouldn't be any different in her eyes. Chloe worries that she really is infected by kryptonite, and that her powers are just dormant.
Lex has been having nightmares about the truth of Lana's pregnancy, and worrying about whether Lana is going to be at the altar or not. Lana, still having unresolved issues about Clark's secret, devises a plan to test Clark. After tricking Chloe into going into the wine cellar cooler to get a gift for Lex, Lana locks her in and waits for her to call Clark. When Clark arrives, Lana witnesses him break the steel door off and then weld it back onto its hinges with his heat vision. After overhearing Chloe and Clark discussing his true feelings for Lana and about her wedding, Lana decides to not marry Lex. Lex has a meeting with Lana's doctor, and when he tries to blackmail Lex over the truth of Lana's pregnancy, a fight ensues and the doctor is killed accidentally. Lana tells Clark her plans, and tells him to wait at his barn at 5 o'clock for her. Lionel walks in, and realizing that Lana knows Clark's secret, and her plans to leave Lex, threatens to kill Clark if she doesn't marry Lex. After waiting for Lana, Clark finally decides to check the church; he finds Lana accepting her vows with Lex and the two officially marry. Later, Lana tells Clark that she loves Lex and that what she said earlier was just a mistake. Lionel informs Lex that he found the doctor's body, and that he knows the truth about Lana's pregnancy. Lex pleads with him, fearing he will lose Lana, but Lionel informs him that he will let him know exactly what he wants when the time comes. As Clark watches on, Lex and Lana get in their limousine and head off for their honeymoon, with Lana watching him as the car pulls away.
