A still from Thodi Si Zameen...

Smriti Irani seems to be one of the most liberal producers around. The cast and crew of Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasmaan can vouch for the creative and financial freedom they enjoy while working for Smriti. Unlike Balaji Telefilms, which has a straitjacketed working environment. Smriti seems to have learnt what not to do from Balaji. Her style of working is a refreshing change for the entire crew of Thodi Si Zameen… as she gives ample freedom to everyone.

The unit of Thodi Si Zameen… has a unique style of working. Before every shot, the actors sit and discuss their dialogues. If they don't agree with the scenes and dialogues, they discuss the same with the director Santram Verma and the creative department. The scenes and the dialogues are then changed accordingly.

Actors like Jaya Bhattacharya, Sanjit Bedi, Kiran Karmarkar are gung-ho about their producer Smriti. Kiran Karmarkar, who plays Sudhanshu in the serial says, "I have worked in so many serials in the past, but have never got this kind of creative satisfaction in my entire career. Before every scene, 10-15 actors sit together and improvise their dialogues. We also discuss the shots."

Another example is Sanjit Bedi aka Munna who has spot boys as his designers. It was Sanjit who came up with this innovative idea and engaged spot boys for his look in the serial. "Thodi Si... is a different experience altogether. All the actors including the seniors sit together and improvise on their dialogues and scenes. Smriti as a producer has given complete liberty to our director and we are obviously very happy," he says.

Jaya who plays Pooja, a character from a chawl, says, "As I am playing a chawl resident, I have often said dialogues that were not in the script. Our creative team and the director are very flexible workwise and they always acknowledge our contribution."

And how different is it from the Balaji style of working? Jaya adds, "I am working on two serials with Balaji -Karam Apna Apna and Kasamh Se. Both the shows are family dramas where they follow a set working style. There is no scope for giving inputs to the creative department of Balaji. I guess different people have different styles of working. But, Smriti is just wonderful as a producer and she knows her job really well."
