Sofia Hayat is a British actress and singer. she has worked on both British and Indian projects.[2]
Hayat first came to public attention on Satellite Channel, Zee TV, where she hosted her own TV show for 3 years starting in 2000. The show became a cult favourite amongst young British Asians. She holds a BA (Hons) in Music and Performing Arts, and has studied acting for 7 years in total, including the Meisner Technique, which she is a huge fan.[3] She has been instructed under David Schwimmer, famously from the American TV show Friends.[4]
In July 2012, Sofia was named the new "Curvy Icon" by Vogue Italia.[5]
In September 2013, Sofia was a new entry into FHM sexiest women in the world. She cam in at 81, above Kim Kardashian, Beyonce and sofia Vergara.[6]

Career
Sofia has appeared in TV advertising campaigns for international brands including Walkers Crisps, McDonald's, and was the first model/actor who featured in the campaign for Timotei hair shampoo, a brand well known for hair products for blondes. This was the first time they shot with an Indian Brunette.
She started acting professionally at 16, where she landed her first role with the BBC on the show Absolute Power, where she starred alongside Stephen Fry.
She then went on to star in the BAFTA award winning show Fur TV, where she played a Latino with a Brazilian accent. The show was an international success and has been translated in over 5 different languages.
For her first Bollywood film, Sofia had to learn Hindi, as she did not speak it, however she did understand some, and took on classes and watched films to perfect the language. It was initially decided that her voice would be dubbed in her first film, but after spending 3 months in India, the producer and Director agreed that Sofia should dub her own voice.
Sofia also hosted and judged a show for UTV Bindaas' reality TV show Superdude Season 2.
Film career
Hayat has recently completed feature films The Unforgettable, Cash and Curry, (starring Ameet Chana) and Exitz. (starring Malcolm Mcdowell and Stephen Billington). The Unforgettable premiered at The Venice Film Festival in 2008 to rave reviews. Hayat played the lead role opposite Raji James. In Cash and Curry she plays the gun-toting wife of a gangster.
In May 2013, Sofia starred opposite Abhay Deol, for the BBC adaption of "Bollywood Carmen". Meera Syaal, and Preeya Khalidas were also part of Carmen, which was shot live in Bradford City for a 1 hour live spectacular!
Sofia has since appeared in BBC's "Waterloo Road", and "Jonathan Creek", as well as playing "Lucia", in the BAFTA award winning series, "Fur Tv", aired on MTV world wide.(Translated for different countries)
She has also published her book called, "Dishonoured", which was published by Blakes Publishing in October 2009, since translated into 3 different languages.
She also appears on the BBC Asian Network on a regular basis for their popular debate shows, and writes for Asiana magazine, and Asian Woman Magazine.
She is also a keen supporter of the charity Ashiana (www.ashiana.org.uk) whom she regularly speaks for, raise money, and help to raise awareness for them. She is a role model to young women affected by violence, abuse, rape and honour killings.
Hayat made her Bollywood debut playing a leading role in the film Diary of a Butterfly, which was released in April 2011.[7] She has since signed two more Bollywood projects.
She has been shooting for the film "A Goodnite" Starring Bollywood actor's Kay Kay Menon, Kumar Gaurav and Raj Zutchi (Slum Dog Millionaire).
She has also been shooting the lead role in the film Naachle London, a new genre of film, with its head in Hollywood, tail in Bollywood but made in London. Director Neville Rashid from Aviary films said, "When Sofia is acting, she becomes the character. There was not a single moment in the film that I did not believe her, this is definitely an award winning performance by her, and one that will be remembered for generations to come".
In November 2011 she graced the cover of India's most prestigious "Health" Magazine, as well as "Women Era" Cover and has also opened for the "Desi Boyz" concert at Ritubhura College, Juhu Mumbai, for John Abraham, Akshay Kumar and Deepika Padukone.
She performed live at the Gitanjali races in November 2011 and the Porche Polo cup in 2013, and went on to do perform for Gitanjali for the Bollywood show with Shiney Ahuja.
At the end of 2011, she signed a new film called "Bhai Ka Maal", directed by Anil Goyal. This is her first Bollywood comedy. The press conference for he film, saw Sofia's image on over 250 national newspapers across India in 2 days.
Sofia has walked the ramp at many fashion weeks, where she has show stopped for designers including Archana Kocher and Nike.
Sofia never intended to enter Bollywood, but before even releasing her first film she signed 4 more.
She has appeared numerous times in India's infamous page 3 columns and magazines as well as news channels.
Naachle London released in the UK on 24 February 2012, where Sofia plays the lead role. The director said that he got many compliments about Sofia's acting. Sofia could not make the premiere as she was promoting her Bollywood film, Diary of a Butterfly in India, and in rehearsals for her item number. She said "I am so sad I could not be in London for Naache London, because it is a great film, and I want to thank the Director Neville Raschid for taking a chance on me to play a role so far apart from my image. Roles like this are a gift and allow actors to really practice their art."
Awards
Hayat has received a 'Hira Manek Award' in India on International Women's Day for her contribution to the arts and acting in Mumbai.
She has also received a Pearl Award being honoured by Subhash Ghai for her excellency in Singing. Both awards received in Mumbai March 2011.
24 May 2011 Sofia Received the highy coveted All India Achievers Award for her contribution to Performing Arts. Other award winners were Celina Jaitley, Gaurav Chopra, Sonu Sood, Kanwaljeet Singh, Mukesh Rishi, Shweta Tiwari, Gayatri Patel, Vaishali desai, Bhavana Pani, Indira Krishnan, Suresh Menon, Anil Dhawan, Penaz Masani, Anil Nagrath.
Sofia was honoured in 2013 on international women's day with an award for her work for charity in India.
Music career
Hayat was asked to write the official song for the victims and survivors of the Pakistani and Indian earthquake. The appeal concert was at The Royal Albert Hall in London.[citation needed]
In 2006, Hayat was in a band that released a song on MTV Base. The song reached #6 in the charts, with all proceeds going to "Mothers Against Guns". This was the second time Hayat had represented a charity and given up all royalty proceeds to the charity. Sofia worked with artist Jesse J on this project. A special performance of the songs was shot at the Mayor of Londons HQ with Ken Livingstone and the Mothers of victims of gun crime.
Hayat also entertained UN troops in 2008.[8]
In 2010, Sofia set up her own record label, Hayat Music, and released her debut single, "What's The Matter". The song charted at 15 in the UK dance charts and 19 world wide. She produced her own video, which she said was a challenge, "having to style myself, run a round buying everything from catsuits to sandwiches for the crew, and praying that my ideas would work!." The video was an international success and was played across many continents.
May 2011-Sofia gave her first ever Live show, singing Jazz with the God Father of Jazz in India, Louis Banks, at the famous venue, The Blue Frog in Mumbai.
In November 2011, Sofia sang at the promo tour for the block buster movie "Desi Boyz", and then went on to perform for the Gitanjali Juvenille Millenium race at the Mahalaxmi race course before Vidya Balan gave an award for the "Dirty Picture" cup.
She has recorded a song for her new film, which she will shoot January 2012, and is fast known in India as not only a talented actress but also a singer. In 2012, Sofia performed at Mahalakmi racecourse for the final polo matches, she invited Mr Poonawalla on stage. Show was a huge success, covered by Bombay Times. Milan Luthra was also present.
In 2013 Sofia performed live at the Porsche polo cup at Mahalakmi race course, where she sang her own songs and performed to the popular Hindi song "Radha"

Charity
Sofia has been confirmed as the Patron of PAWS Mumbai, with Pooja Bhatt, where she has rescued a number of animals including, owls, turtles and birds of prey.[9] She has also posed for a PETA campaign, encouraging consumers to buy cosmetics that are not tested on animals.[10]
