Part six
"ithni thand kyu ho raha hai yaha.."
"Jungle mein thand hi hotha hai Jodha begum..
"Haan hume gyaat hai. Paranthu ithna thand, yeh tho hum ne socha nahi tha.."
"Ghabraayiye mat Jodha begum, hume jungle mein akele raat ghusaarne ki aadat hai. Hum tamam intezaamat kardete hai.."
"Par aap karenge kya?"
"Sawal bohot karti hai aap. Bas hum pehle acchi si jagah dhudhte hai raat ghusaarne k liye.."
She stops following him contemplating whether or not to trust him but then he is Shehensha, he gave his word, and he'd not harm her or touch her without a reason but still...
"Chaliye warna raasta bhatak jayengi.."
Jalal found a small cave that's spacious enough for both of them, thankfully not far from where they stopped.
"Rehne ki jagah milgayi Jodha begum.."
She hurried along to stand beside him eyeing the cave.
"hum iss gufa mein nahi reh sakte.."
"kyu nahi Jodha begum? hum iss jungle mein shaahi mehel tho nahi banwaa sakte na..."
She gave him a glare. He smirked in return teasing her.
"hum aapki khatir zameen aasmaan ek kar sakte hai, chand tare tod laasakte hai; lekin mehel nahi banaapayenge iss waqt. Hume maaf kar dijiye Jodha begum.."😛
"Aap k liye har koi baat ek Mazak hai na? bas issee kaaran hum aap k saat yaha iss gufa mein nahi reh sakte.." her glare intensified.
He laughed and she couldn't help but smile a little.
"Ajeeb baat hai na Jodha begum, aap humare saat nahi reh sakti, fir bhi humare liye aap k Prathaap sa ki shart qubool ki..."
His statement made her freeze. She herself had been wondering why she accepted this shart' that landed her in this dangerous journey. There would have been many ways to think; but she wanted to save him, for her family's sake, for his family's sake- he needed to be safe and sound. But then the difficult part- did she save him for her sake as well? She was struggling hard to answer it. The answer was definitely not a no' and not a yes' either.
"Ussey bhi ajeeb tho hum hai.. yeh sab jaante hue bhi hum aap k peeche peeche aagaye.."
He was mumbling to himself but she heard it. Before she could speak anything he asked her to come along.
"aag jalane mein humari madad kijiye.."
Leaving Jhansi to graze, he proceeded to place the firewood. She helped him to light the wire. He looked up to smile and she smiled back.
*BG- Ishq hai woh ehsaas*
She realized how she had been staring at him. Getting up abruptly she went to sit in a corner, shivering a bit as her back hit the stone wall. He shook his head and got up to close the entrance to the cave using a huge rock.
"yeh kya kar rahe hai aap.." he heard her asking.
"humari aur aap ki suraksha k liye hai Jodha begum.. Haan waise aap tho sherni hai, khud ko bachaa sakti hai magar hume kaun bachayega? Hum bagh ki waja se aur ghayal nahi hona chahte.. "
"kabhi kehte hai baghin aur kabhi sherni? " she muttered under her breath before raising her voice, "Paranthu agar hume raat ko tehelne ka mann hua tho?"
"Aap kahi nahi jayengi.." his tone was serious suddenly, "bahar khatra ho sakta hai Jodha begum.."
She nodded in agreement and he walked back to sit beside the fire.
"Aap ithni dur baithengi tho aapko thand lag jayegi. Aap bimaar padjaogi.. humare kareeb aayiye..." he patted the ground next to him but she hesitated.
"Hichkichaayiye mat Jodha begum. hum aap k shohar hai. Shehensha hai hum. Aap ko hum se koi khatra nahi, huma aisa koi kaam nahi karenge jisse aapko thes pohoche!"
Their eyes met and she was taken aback for a second as to how genuine his eyes looked. What happened to the old Jalal who taunted her for no reason? May be things do change over time..
She wasn't the same Jodha either. She cautiously got up, scooting a little closer she began to lie down.
"Aap zameen pe.. aap ko adat nahi hai na!" Jalal begins to take his overcoat (sorry guys, what's that he wears over his Jama? I call it overcoat) but she stopped him.
"humare paas vastra hai.."
She pulled out a Dupatta from her bag. Spreading it as a blanket, using her bag as a pillow she lied down.
"Shabba khair Jodha begum.."
"Shubh rathri.."
A while later he found her sound asleep shivering a little. She looked so peaceful, so beautiful.. there is no denial, she was beautiful, his Jodha begum. He laughed at how his thoughts about her completely changed. He was treating her like a real begum now. Smiling to himself, he removed his overcoat and draped it over her. She deserved it, he mused; after all she had done for himself and for the Mughal pariwar she deserved some respect and honor. Soon he was sound asleep as his tiredness overpowered him.
Midnight:
Jodha woke up feeling unusually warm. Her eyes adjusted to the surroundings and it took her a while to realize she was in a cave alone with Jalal sleeping by the fireside.
She looked around and found him sleeping at a few inches away. He looked calm, angelic and he was holding her hand while sleeping? She gently pulled it out of his grasp. He stirred in sleep and turned to the other side.
For the first time she didn't get angry that he touched her. The fact that he was still maintaining safe distance while holding her hand made her smile. Was he making sure she was alright?
"Aap ko sahi salaamat wapis nahi legaye tho hume koi bhi nahi aanedega waha.." his words rang in her head.
She smiled once again as she touched his feathery soft hair. But she retreated soon, coming out of her stupor; realizing what she had been doing and looked down. It was then she saw his coat which was draped over her.
"shehensha ne..."
She saw that he was sleeping on the cold floor with nothing but only his jaama on. When did he become so caring about her? And why was she smiling like an idiot at his slightly sweet gestures?! Why was that her ghrina seemed to be getting weaker every day in her heart?
"Hum aise muskuraa kyu rahe hai.. kyu hum inki dekhbal karthe rahein? Kyu inki raksha karne k liye hum Prachand parbat jaane k liye bhi tayyar hogaye? Kyu hume inn pe krodh nahi raaraha. Kyu..."
Before she could think further a soft sound from Jhaansi interrupted her. She got up and carefully pushed the rock (with much difficulty) a little and sneaked out.
"Arey Jhaansi... soyi nahi? Thoda aaraam karo na.. Kal bhi yatra karna hai hume.."
The horse greeted her with another soft noise.
"arey arey.. pani chahiye tumhe? Chalo humaare saat yahi paas mein taalab hai.."
Taking Jhansi along she took a few steps towards the pond unaware that someone had been following her.
"Jaldi karo Jhansi thand bohot hai.." she whispered to herself pulling Jalal's coat tightly around her.
She then heard footsteps of someone approaching her and turned around.
"haa aapne kaha tha ki hum bahar na jaaye par Jhansi yaha paani..."
The words died in her throat as she saw a masked man with a sword pointed at her.
Soon he was joined by couple of others and she screamed.
There in the cave, Jalal woke up with a jerk.
"Jodhaaa..." he took a deep breath and calmed down closing his eyes, "hum ne bura khwaab dekha jismein aap.."
He opened his eyes to find her missing. His heart skipped a beat as he saw someone had moved the rock from its place and the entrance was slightly ajar.
"Jodha begum bahar gayi.."
He ran out to find Jhansi was missing as well.
"Kaha jaa sakti hai woh.."
"shehenshaaa!!!"
Her faint scream from afar was enough to send shivers down his spine.
"Jodhaa.."
He ran frantically looking for the source of the voice.
"Jodhaa!! Jodhaa kaha hai aap? Kaha chali gayii.. JODHAA.."
He ran as tension gripped his heart, grimacing as he heard her crying again.
"Iss taraf! Hum aarahe hai Jodhaa.."
He clutched his shamsheer real tight and ran towards the pond.
