Rasyafan and others,

Ashwathama is not immortal. This is what MB has to say. Vrish had quoted this somewhere in the Mytho Masti forum and I am reproducing it here

this is what Krishna said to him:

The holy one said, "The fall of this mighty weapon will not be fruitless. The foetus will die. But being dead, it will live again and have a long life! As regards thyself, all wise men know thee for a coward and a sinful wretch! Always engaged in sinful acts, thou art the slayer of children. For this reason, thou must have to bear the fruit of these thy sins. For 3,000 years thou shalt wander over this earth, without a companion and without being able to talk with anyone. Alone and without anybody by thy side, thou shalt wander through diverse countries, O wretch, thou shalt have no place in the midst of men. The stench of pus and blood shall emanate from thee, and inaccessible forests and dreary moors shall be thy abode! Thou shalt wander over the Earth, O thou of sinful soul, with the weight of all diseases on thee.

In other words, it can be assumed that he died after 3000 years.

Chiranjeevis are not immortal. There is a subtle difference. Immortal means "Amar".
Chiranjeev means "Long lived."

The subtle difference between Immortals and 'Infinitely Prolonged'

Although the words Immortal (Amar) and Chiranjeev are used almost like synonyms, there is in fact a slight difference? The word Chiranjeev is a combination of "chiram" (long) and jeevi (lived) This word is often confused with immortality ("amaratva") The following classification of beings will make this clear:

1. Mortals -- Beings who die. Includes all beings on the Earth - Humans, Rakshasas, Nagas etc. This is you and I.

2. Chiranjeevis -- Beings that will live a very long life, so long that normal humans feel that they live for eternity. They started off as humans, but have received the boon / curse of eternal life. Mortals can become Chiranjeevi by good deeds etc., but cannot become Amar easily unless they drink Amrita of Devas. Hence when a younger bows to an elder in Hindu society, the elder would bless "Chiranjeevi Bhava" (live long) and not "Amar Bhava" (live forever).

3. Immortals (Amar) -- Beings who do not die. This includes Devas, Apsaras, Gandharvas. These beings do not die at all. Even in war when they are wounded, they recover and continue to live. Devas drank Amrita, which made them Immortal. Before that, they too were mortals - sons of Aditi and Kashyapa. Note that Asuras / Daityas (i.e. the step-brothers of Devas and sons of Diti & Kashyapa) die in the wars and are then resurrected / revived by way of Sanjeevani Vidya possessed by their Guru Shukra.

4. Eternal -- Beings that will live forever. All the three categories above, even Immortal beings, get dissolved / die at the time of Pralaya (end of the universe), including its secondary creator Brahma. The only real Eternals are Vishnu, Shiva, Sheshanaga (the Eternal Serpent), and the four Vedas ... yes, although they are not really Beings, Vedas are considered Eternal in that they do NOT get destroyed at the end of time.

Thanks for the info Varali. I don't know about this but everywhere I have read that Ashwathama was immortal and still lives.

Am confused. 😕

Anyway, immortality also ends at end of the universe and kaliyug as it is not eternal 😆. So all immortal beings will die at the end of creation. But what is eternal are Mahadev, Adi Shakti and Vishnu, Shreshth Naag and Vedas. They will always be there where ever they are now.

@rasyafan thanx fr sharing d info. its very interesting to note that for some ppl immortality is a boon while fr some others it became a curse!
@varaali u r right that 'chiranjeevi' literally means long life, but I've heard it many times that Hanuman ji is still alive, and some time ago I had read in a magazine abt some real encounters of people who witnessed his presence! some of them were mountaineers who said they saw a man like monkey (like Bigfoot/ Yeti ) in the Himalayas who guided them when they lost the way or something like that I don't remember exactly.
One personal experience I want 2 share wid u all! Few years ago when I was going through a rough phase, my mom advised me to read Hanuman Chalisa 100 times! and I did it for 4 long hours religiously! Next morning me and my whole family woke up to a loud grunting noise that came from our terrace. We didn't know what animal it was who was making so much noise, and were terrified to open the doors/windows. my brother looked out of the bathroom window and saw a monkey sitting on the window ledge which was right above my room! We live in a the middle of the city and there are no monkeys in this area but here it was - howcome it reached here I have no idea! The monkey went away after sometime on its own, but I was supershocked! everyone said that it was Hanuman ji himself who paid a visit to me after I prayed to him. I don't knw if it was really him or just some coincidence but even though I am a highly skeptical being but this experience led me to believe that God exists and this was some kind of sign for me. 😊
Now coming to - Ashwathama. Even he is said to be still alive. I belong to Madhya Pradesh, and here is a place called Asirgarh fort. Many local people and even my parents and grandparents have told this to me many times that even today Ashwathama visits the fort and worships at the Shivling there. Though no body has actually seen him but everyday you will find fresh flowers placed on the Shivling. I would try to gather more first-hand info abt this frm the local ppl I know, but you can also google abt this legend as it is very well-known.

^^ Yes..Even I have heard about the real incident of Hanuman sighting by some pilgrims at Himalayas/ Mansorovar ! There is even a picture of it posted on various blogs on the internet. Just google it it's all over the place. Though I don't believe it, a lot of people seem to claim that it is Hanuman himself.

The photo is that of a very old man sitting inside a cave resembling a monkey and holding a Ramayan book in his hands. I personally found it a bit scary. Apparently, the person who took the pic died right away and the others from that group found the pic when they developed the photo negatives from his camera.

You have been blessed.

Of course, Hanumanji need not take a form to visit / bless you. Gods exist around us in form of energy / light. But He had to take the form of a monkey to make you believe. Hanumanji could have as well appeared as your next door neighbour, but would have had the same faith as you are having now?

He had to take a form that you would believe in. Thanks for sharing this very personal experience. Truly Hanuman Chalisa is a Maha- Mantra.
