Hello Friends

I was just reading, when I found this Sanskrit mantra. In some posts, I had said there are four people who are immortals :-

Ashwathama, Hanumanji, Parshuramji and Kripacharyaji

but according to this mantra Bali, Ved Vyas ji and Vibhishan are also Immortals.

Ashwatthamo Balir Vyasah
Hanumanscha Vibhishanah
Kripah Parashuramascha
Saptaite Chirajeevinah

Ashwatthama, Bali, Vyasa, Hanuman, Vibhishana, Kripa and Parashurama these are the seven eternal, ageless, immortal souls. It is believed Parashurama is sitting even today in penance at Mahendra mountain. Why this great penance ? Not for himself, but for the peace and happiness of the whole world. So in total 7 beings are immortal not 4.

Interesting, so what about Ashwattama and Kripacharya, if they are immortal beings wouldn't they be on Earth too as per understanding of immortal existence of the material body?

Yes I've also read abt them. Wondering if any one has ever seen them in real, it would be great to know abt such experiences, I myself would love to meet these great souls. Btw why are they still living? I mean is their some great purpose in store for them for helping mankind in the Kaliyug?

They do say that some people have seen ashwathama in one of the post a girl said that her grandfather had seen one when he went to visit hills of Himalaya. He said that he is Ashwathama. Will try to find that post. Even my mamaji once said that he met a person who was talking about spitituality. His forehead had an injury at the center of head where we put tilak and Ashwathama had Mani which had been pulled out by krishna.

Immortality of Kripacharya ji

After his involvement in Kurukshetra, he worked as teacher and guru for Parikshit who is the grandson of Arjuna. The reason behind Kripacharya being immortal was that Lord Krishna has offered him a boon that he will be immortal.

Bali

This Bali is not Vanar Bali killed by Shri Ramji but King Bali as seen in Devon ke Dev mahadev king of all asurs.

The chiranjivi are as follows:

  • Ashwatthama, the son of Drona, a great warrior. He acted out of cowardice to avenge the killing of his father, resulting in a curse of immortality.
  • Bali Chakravarthi, was granted a boon by Vishnu that he would be the next Indra, before merging with Vishnu. He expounds virtues of valour and charity.
  • Hanuman, served Rama. He stands for selflessness, courage, devotion, strength, and righteous conduct.
  • Kripa, military guru of the princes in the Mahabharata.
  • Parashurama, 6th avatar of Vishnu, master of all astras, sastras and divine weapons. The Kalki Purana writes that he will re emerge at end time to be the martial guru of Kalki. He will then instruct the final avatar to undertake penance to receive celestial weaponry, required to save mankind at end time.
  • Vibhishana, brother of Ravana. Vibhishana surrendered to Rama before his battle with Ravana. Later, he was crowned king of Lanka after Ravana was killed by Rama. He stands for righteousness. Vibhishana is not a true Chiranjeevi, as his boon of longevity is to remain on the earth only until the end of Treta Yuga.
  • Vyasa, a sage who narrated the Mahabharata. He represents erudition and wisdom. He was the son of Rishi Prashar and grandson of Rishi vashist. He was born in almost last of Tretayug, lived to see the whole Dwaparyug and also had seen the initial phase of Kalyug.
  • Udal, the unbeaten warrior of malwa.

Other famous immortals or Chiranjivins. Jambhavan, Markandeya, Devapi, Maru, Saptarishis, Bhusunda (Crow).

It is specified that Markandeya had boon that he will never die and is blessed with immortality. He is commonly not found in the list of seven Chiranjeevis as he was born mortal and later attained immortality, unlike the seven Chiranjeevis who were born immortal.

I found a beautiful story of King Bali

Chiranjeevi 5 - Maha bali

5. Mahabali (King Bali) - The realm of Patala (specifically the Sutala -- see my earlier post "Devavrata becomes Bhishma") is supposed to be the realm of Bali. Every year Bali surfaces on Earth on the day of Bali Pratipada (first day after Lakshmi Puja - Deepavali) and grants favors to people. Also known as Sahastrabahu (one with thousand arms), Bali is a righteous king and is therefore deified. Although he was Asura, he was very religious and pious. He took great care of his subjects and his rule is considered a golden era.

King Bali is immortalized because even Vishnu had to humble himself as Vamana to conquer him. He stands out for his valour and charity - two great eternal qualities.

Mahabali is believed to have ruled in South India before the Ramayana events and his empire is believed to have extended from the Vindhyas in the north to the far out in the south. His capital was Kerala. In the state of Kerala, the Onam festival is a celebration of the visit of Mahabali to their land. Bali is supposed to return every year to the land of his people, to ensure that they are prosperous.

Bali's lineage is as under:

Marichi - Kashyapa (with Diti) - Hiranyakashipu - Prahlada - Veerochana - Bali

Looking at the growing popularity and fame of King Bali the Devas became extremely concerned that the Daitya way might conquer the people. Vishnu decided to intervene and took the Avatar known as the Vamana - a poor Brahmin boy. While Bali is performing an Aswamedha Yagna at Kurukshetra in order to ascend Indra's throne, Vamana comes to him and asks for 3 strides of land.

Just as King Mahabali agrees to grant the land much against warnings given by his guru Shukracharya, Vamana begins to expand. With his first step the Brahmin boy covers the whole of earth and with the other step he covers the whole of the skies. He then asked King Mahabali where is the space for him to keep his third foot.

The King realizes that he is no ordinary Brahmin. Mahabali bows before Vamana and asks him to place his last step on his head so that he could keep the promise to Vishnu. The Brahmin places his foot on the head and pushes him towards Patala, the nether world. This is where Bali stays now. Vishnu also gives him immortality for his benevolence.

It is said that by another boon of Vishnu, Bali will be the next (Purandara is the current Indra), that is, the eighth Indra (King of Devas) during the time of the eighth Manu, Savarni Manu.

As a footnote, this is all fine about Bali, but what about Vamana? -- It is said that Vamana becasme the guard of the gate of Bali's realm Patala and will remain so forever. (Tulsidas' Ramayana).

Ved Vyas ji

It is said that he lived in Kurukshetra, in a forest, very near to the battle field, enabling him to know considerable details about the Kurukshetra War, as it took place in front of his eyes. It is said that he continues to live thus.

http://hindumyths.blogspot.in/2008/05/7.html

I could not find why he was Cheeranjeevi but I have a feeling that Vishnu ji gave him this boon as he compiled ved into four books. When Shri ganeshji was asked by Vyas ji that he write Mahabharat and he will narrate it Ganeshji put a condition that he speak without pause and Ved vyas ji also put condition that he write after understanding the story. SO may be afterwords he was given this boon.

If anyone finds out how he became chiranjeevi then please do let us know
