Hello to everyone! ... My first time in debate mansion and a big thanks to raksha.l who convinced me to post here (though i am late by 3 months!)

Since we all got together on IF because of some TV show or the other... Here's my question - "should serials take up socially relevant topics as part of their story line ? "

Boring Question ? .. Just give it some thought ...

Think about the rano drama going on in Kasam Se - life for a widow ?

Think abt KT's rape in KSKBT, Mukti's in KZK

Think savita's euthanasia, also in KSKBT

etc etc..

Should TV only about relaxing or can it be a medium of social change ? Do such incidents help create awareness in general public ? Should such sensitive matters be shown on family-shows, that even children watch ? and most importantly, Are you happy with the way such serious issues have been handled as part of the entertainment serials ? Do you think they are taking up a serious issue and making a complete joke of it ?

Such issues when shown on mass media can spread awareness. As far as family shows are concerned, showing social issues is anyday better than showing a girl getting married 7 times.

This was a general remark, since I don't watch TV soaps I'm not really equipped to comment on this.

Thanks to raksha.l for recommending you and Warm Welcome to DM.. Have fun!

"should serials take up socially relevant topics as part of their story line ?"

YES! They should. As they are appealing to vast variety of viewers but here are problem areas, especially the soaps :

1. Over doing the emotional aspects.
2. Portrayal of unrealistic happening.
3. Attempting to make serials addictive, going over board.
4. Basing the soaps on one rule victory of the right, which is practically not the case.
5. Not being fair on both aspects of lead goodie character and the vamp.
6. Not projecting the real facts like communication gap, ego, bad thinking to be reasons of conflicts.
7. Switching behavior patterns from good - bad - good then again bad.. sense less
8. can go on and on....

In summarize serials today is over exaggeration of bad happening in happening in higly emotional/melodramatic fashion.

Will add more of my views... in hurry...got to eat now, ttyl
