9x03 some thoughts

Misha Collins had himself quite a night on "Supernatural" season 9 this week. Not only did we have an opportunity to see Misha Collins' Castiel get an opportunity to step into the spotlight, but we also saw the full range of human emotions from him. There was joy, laughter, sadness, and some great scenes overall. Three episodes into season 9, and it's hard to be anything other than thrilled with the progress this season is making.

First of all, let's begin here with April Kelly. This was a woman that we expected to be a savior for Cas based on her getting him out of the rain, giving him food, and then even sleeping with him to gain his trust ... but it was all part of a trick, as she was one of many out there possessed by an angel in an effort to get the information out of him about what was really going on with Heaven. This was all played perfectly in that as a new human, Castiel didn't think twice about a woman wanting to help him, and it didn't seem as strange that a random woman would want to sleep with a homeless guy.

While we were genuinely worried for a few minutes about whether or not Castiel was going to even survive the attack by April, Sam and Dean saved the day! Specifically, Ezekiel saved the day by taking over Sam's body and then doing his thing. They all went back to the headquarters, but there was another twist at the end: Ezekiel, afraid from his own survival, could not allow Castiel to live with him.

Even in spite of the difficult conversations and the sad moments, there was a ton of humor in here; in particular, the line with the "angel blade" was pure hilarity. The writers are really handling this story well, and figuring out just how to give it as much realism as possible. Castiel gets an adventure from everything, whether it is sleeping or eating burritos for the first time. This is probably what in turn made the news from Dean that he could not stay all the sadder. Misha is a series regular, and we therefore know that we will be seeing much more of him in the future; however, don't expect to see much of him next week.

Overall we still loved what "Supernatural" brought to the table this week. Not only was it one of the best episodes of the season, it's one of our favorites in a long time. Grade: A.
