CHAPTER 3

Hassaan's family came to meet the Khan family and there was no doubt that the family was very well respected and its members very sweet and pleasant to get along. Hassaan was the youngest in his family too, having an older brother and a sister who was both married and settled abroad.

Zoya found Hassaan to be a gem of a person and was over cloud nine with happiness. She got along with Hassaan really well and was absolutely blissful that her daughter had finally found her match.

Though Asad couldn't deny the fact that Hassaan was a very good-natured, good-looking and decent boy, still he had a hard time accepting him. He made useless excuses about how Hassaan laughed too much and how he looked too young to be getting married but no one listened to him. In his heart he knew how he was behaving, was childish. He was making excuses that sounded stupid even to him.

So on Zoha's insistent insistence, he finally gave in and gave her a green signal but still his heart wanted one incentive to trust Hassaan fully, believe that he really loved his daughter as much as he claimed to. Though Ahsan had told him he had seen Hassaan's caring behavior towards Zoha on many occasion still Asad wanted to witness it himself and one day he finally did.

It happened on a day when Hassaan came to drop Zoha off. Asad had, after much insistence, allowed Hassaan to pick and drop Zoha as they worked at the same place, on the condition that they come back straight home. As there was a cricket match that day, Ahsan asked Hassaan to stay back so that they could watch the match together.

During the match, Asad accidentally dropped the empty bowl of popcorn, scattering the glass pieces everywhere. As he was picking them up, he didn't realize when an unaware Zoha came in the lounge and by the time he looked, she was just about to step on a piece of glass. The word of warning died on his lips as he realized it was too late when out of nowhere, Hassaan placed his hand under Zoha's foot instinctively, creating a barrier between her and the glass, preventing her injury.

As Asad looked at the blood gushing from the young man's hand, he knew he could trust him. He wanted such a boy for his daughter who thought of her before thinking of himself and who always protected his daughter from any type of pain by acting like a shield. And without knowing, Hassaan earned respect in Asad's eyes that day.

Soon after, Hassaan and Zoha's wedding date was fixed a month from then and the preparations were in full swing. After all it was Asad Ahmed Khan's only daughter's wedding.

Hassaan had refused to accept any dowry but on Asad's insistence, he had accepted the house Asad gifted them which was only a block away from theirs and that made Asad feel much better that his daughter would now always be close by.

***

*The Evening before the Mehendi*

Asad was sitting on a bench in the garden, staring blankly at the stretching grounds in front of him, lost in thoughts when Zoha came and quietly sat beside him. Ever since her marriage had been fixed, she had been spending more time with him if that was even possible. He didn't know if it was good or bad. On one hand, he enjoyed her company but on the other hand, he knew it would be all the more difficult to cope with her absence once she left.

"Hey sweetie, what's up?" He smiled, looking at her.

"Abbu, I'm getting married. How will I live without you guys?" She asked him in tears, startling Asad. When it came to emotions, she was just like her mother. Totally unpredictable.

Asad instinctively felt like asking her to not get married, but then he knew that wasn't what Zoha wanted now. She needed his support.

"Aww Sweetie, it's not like you'll never see us again. You're going to be only a block away and I bet you anything you won't even miss us cos we'll probably be there all day!" He chuckled softly, slinging his arm around her shoulders and she rested her head on his chest in response.

When she continues snifling, Asad said in a serious tone, "That's it! I know you wouldn't be able to live without me! I'm calling this wedding off! Where's my cell phone? I need to call that young man and tell him that you aren't ready for this wedding!"

"NOOO! I didn't mean it like that-" She broke off as she looked up at Asad's grinning face and hit him lightly on his arm whining, "Abbu!!"

"What?" Asad asked innocently.

"I meant it in the sense that I'll miss this lifestyle... You know what I mean? No responsibilities, full freedom." She said softly.

"Oh I think its Hassaan who's going to lose his freedom. It's always the guys who suffer after marriage. Look at me, for example." He winked at her.

She laughed lightly. "Don't let Ammi catch you saying this!"

After a while, she spoke up again, "But I'll miss this garden. We two have spent so much time here."

"Yes, I love this place; so calm and quiet." He replied, deciding not to tell her that her new house had a huge garden too. She'll get a fine surprise when she sees it herself.' He thought.

They remained quiet for sometime then, enjoying each other's company in silence when Asad realized it was practically impossible for Zoha to be quiet for so long and glanced down to find her asleep.

He smiled lightly and didn't even realize how long he sat there, simply staring at his baby as memories flooded his brain. She woke up about half an hour later and grinned sheepishly at him, "Did I doze off?"

"Yes, you did! You need to get some sleep. You're always out shopping!" He chided her gently.

"I know. Thank God all the shopping's done now. By the way, where are Ammi and Bhaiya? I haven't seen them in a while." She said.

***

Ahsan hugged his Ammi tighter as she cried into his chest.

"Ahsan, she's so small! How is she going to manage the household and the responsibilities all by herself?" She sniffed.

"Ammi, Zoe just acts like a kid in the house otherwise when she needs to, she can act quite mature. So don't worry. She'll handle." He said softly.

Ahsan marveled at his mother's nature at dealing with everybody. She didn't vent out her feelings in front of Abbu as she usually did because she knew he was already very depressed about Zoha leaving. Instead she would come to Ahsan's room and cry her heart out whenever she felt any insecurities regarding Zoha.

"But you know, she does such childish antics." Zoya's face lit up with a fond smile. "Just yesterday, when Asad went to lie down, she sneaked up to him and started tickling his ear with a feather. He kept brushing it off, mumbling and complaining under his breath, not realizing his daughter was behind it. When he finally realized and turned around, she ran away. And then they chased each other for so long! Just like they used to when she was little. It was like all these years never passed." She said softly smiling to herself.

Ahsan laughed heartily at his sister's antics. "She'll never grow up! Ok Ammi, now wipe your tears. You do realize you have to save some for Zoe's Rukhsati, don't you?" He said laughing lightly.

"Yeah right, like Asad will give me a chance. He'll be the one crying rivers while I try to calm him down." She smiled through her tears.

Just then, Zoha popped her head inside Ahsan's room and exclaimed, "There you are! I've been looking for you guys!"

Zoya wiped her tears hastily not wanting her daughter to get upset and left the room with the excuse that she had something important to talk to Asad about the wedding. She was lucky that Zoha didn't suspect anything.

"So what are you doing, Bhaiya?" Zoha asked, sitting down next to Ahsan on his bed.

"Nothing. Just thinking about poor Hassaan and mentally sympathizing with him." He said in a sad teasing tone, shaking his head.

"Bhaiya! He's such a lucky guy that he's getting me! You're just jealous that we're getting our happily ever after and you're not!" She said, snickering.

"Oh, I thought he would have been a lucky guy with a happily ever after if he turned down your proposal!"
He said with a straight face and sniggered when Zoha hit him on his arm.

"First of all Bhaiya, he was the one who proposed. Not me." She began and Ahsan muttered, 'his fault' under his breath earning a glare from Zoha. "What did you say?"

"I'm saying it's his own fault! I always thought you forced him to marry you by holding a gun to his head or something but if that's not the case then he's the stupidest guy ever." He said laughing loudly.

"No, he isn't! And if you call him stupid once more, I'll... I'll ruin your carefully gelled hair!" Zoha threatened.

"Aww kid! If there's no thing I'm gonna miss, it'll be your stupid threats." Ahsan said with a sad smile but he was careful to keep his tone teasing.

"Bhaiya, I know I sound super excited about getting married and I am..." She said slowly in a quiet serious manner. "But I get so sad when I realize I'll be leaving this life behind. And all of you too."

Ahsan looked at his little sister to see tears swimming in her eyes. She was just like Zoya when it came to crying. They got sentimental at the drop of a hat. Ahsan wound an arm around her shoulder and squeezed her reassuringly. Normally he was allergic to displays of physical affection but today was different.

"You know Zoe, I might have shifted to your house but I don't think I'll be able to survive your "I love you" chanting to Hassaan." He chuckled, trying to cheer her up.

"What?" Zoha asked, distracted.

"You know you're both always telling each other that! It drives me up the wall." He explained, his eyes twinkling.

"Bhaiya!" She rolled her eyes before resting her head on his shoulder and yawning widely and in 5 minutes she had dozed off.

It was late night and she needed her sleep. 'Tomorrow is going to be one of the biggest day of her life.' Ahsan thought as tears came to his eyes without warning. He blinked them away before carefully transfering Zoha's head to his lap, placing a cushion under her head and settled back against the head board in a comfortable position for the night and that was how their parents found them the next morning.
