Maharashtra transport chief seeks ban on biker films

< =text/> < src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js" =text/>

Mumbai, Jan 10 (IANS) Brakes will be applied on scenes of bike racing and rash driving in Bollywood movies if the Maharashtra transport commissioner has his way.

Alarmed by a spate of accidents involving speeding bikes, Transport Commissioner S.D. Shinde has asked the Censor Board of India to delete scenes of bike racing and rash driving from films.

'I want bike and car racing scenes to be banned in movies since the youth is trying to ape the actors' stunts. This only leads to accidents as these youths have no expertise and are not capable of handling such powerful bikes,' he said.

'Films like 'Dhoom 2' encourage rash driving and bike racing,' Shinde told IANS on the sidelines of the Road Safety Week observed by the transport department Jan 1-8.

'That is why I have written to the censor board, asking them to delete such scenes from the movies,' he added.

According to him, 85 percent of road accidents are due to the driver's fault and 70 percent of two-wheeler mishaps are because of speeding.

Statistics available with the Mumbai traffic police show that the number of offences by two-wheeler riders have doubled since 2003 and the number of two-wheeler accidents since then have more then trebled.

Though the city's traffic department approves of the move, Bollywood directors are far from amused. Films without thrills and action don't sell, they argue.

While Sanjay Dalvi, who directed two blockbusters - 'Dhoom' and 'Dhoom 2' - preferred not to comment, another director, who did not wish to be named, called the proposed move 'just another cheap publicity gimmick'.

'Wanting some cheap publicity, the department has come up with such a stupid idea. How can films sell if there are no thrills and action scenes? And what about Hollywood action movies, will they delete such scenes too?' he asked.

'We must just ignore such suggestions from the transport department,' he added.

This is a worldwide debate, In western world it generally tends to be along videogames, movie's and video's

So are people responsible for their own actions? If yes, what is the purpose of a censor board?

On the other hand

Watching movie's corrupt a person's mind? or usage of a weapon causes a death? so ban them from Public domain

New York state tried prosecuting the gun manufacturers for Gun-Crimes

Your thoughts Please😊

Personal responsibility or liability

My feelings are mixed on this issue.
However, I'm against censoring bike racing scenes in movies. It would hardly achieve anything, imo, as long as we have lousy laws and enforcement against over speeding and as long as we have bikes being manufactured and advertised as the fastest on market. But then, isn't this the same Govt. who banned and closed down the Dance Bars of Mumbai enabling more than half of all 70000 unemployed bar dancers to get into prostitutes to earn their daily bread? šŸ˜‰

A thriller movie is expected to impress you with the theater thrilled, surprises, and content that your money was well spent. But it is obvious that such incidents of a movie outweighs the actuality. The youth of today wants to live in dream land and compares himself or herslf with the best and thus copies.

A tender mind will get impact of what it sees.
At my early age, I always saw a villian playing Billiards. So when I saw a pool table in a house, I freaked 😳 but I had my elder sister with me who lovingly told me how movies are different then reality. and today we have a pool too šŸ˜†

May be movie like Guddi, showing real face should be shown to kids or more naked reality of show biz as shown in Kagaj ke phool. May be Hritik could come at the end and say..DONOT TRY IT AT HOME šŸ˜‰

We do need to clear it that this is all made belief like fairy tales. May be that is why we have universal studio in Hollywood where you see flood and fire etc right infront of your eyes (And king kong bumping next to you or the shark of Jaws killing a man infront of you)

SO I guess it is combination of both.

But Johnny boy is known for zooming through Khar and Bandra suburbans roads, and (as rumor has it) that was one of the reasons for his casting in part one. Even Junior started it too just to promote that movie! šŸ˜†

Exactly....well said. God strike me dead if I'm lying but everytime returning way back home after watching a Bruce Lee movie, I used to have this peculiar desire to chop the streetlight pole and cut it into two!

After playing Grand Theft Auto on PSP first time, I was going crazy on road after that. I felt as if the car was not fast enough at 70 miles 🤢

I don't see the same thing happening after watching a racing movie. I agree with all that was said above. It needs a certain maturity and control to act responsibly. If the traffic dept is hell bent, they must have a reason more substantial than publicity stunt.

There was this event which was an inspiration from a movie

You have kids on a bike racing across a traffic light, now that traffic light in daytimes, is very close to a gridlock, at 2-3 AM hardly any traffic, but mostly has traffic due to a Bus station closeby. But all they have is flashing yellow after 11.00PM

We had that event for like a couple of months, locals complained due to noise, Cops were posted, but then things restarted after a few weeks

It all ended with one of my seniors crashing his bike into a Bus at 100kmph. and he was a bigtime politicians son. From that point on, none of us ever raced across that intersection(we found different things to došŸ˜‰)

Kids are Kids, young and stupid, you have to let them fall and learn, Everyone has to learn there is a consequence to an action, but at some point the civilized society has to step in and put some brakes on somewhere, maybe not ban movies, but perhaps carry a tougher sentences for offenses such as this, but you know money can buy your way out of it in India

I agree with you sareg, and hence I support the police department taking action. I vaguely said it earlier, hence clarifying now !
Even in oakland,CA, drag racing is a super sport! you think Raider Nation (Oakland NFL team supporters) is crazy? One should Check out these racers and their supporters. My favorite bad girl dream is to participate 😈, I guess some people want to do everything they watch on screen. I recognize the trouble cops must face in controling rich spoilt brats inspired by dhoom!

A bit off topic,

Did anybody read that a boy in pakistan hung himself and died after watching Saddam execution? It was not a suicide, it was a child's play . I'll look up for the news to get link.
