Udaan(1989-1991) VS BV(2008-Present)

Dear Readers,

In my school days I used to watch a tele show called Udaan which aired on the Indian Television channel DD National in 1989 - 91. Today after 22 years I can proudly say that apart from my parents support it was this serial which encouraged me to do something meaningful in life. It also taught me to love in fact worship the work that I do and never ever to give up.

The serial was written and directed by Kavita Choudhary who was also the main lead of the serial. It also starred Shekhar Kapur in a cameo.

It was based on the struggle of a woman aspiring to be an IPS officer. It was probably the first Indian television show on women empowerment. The serial is inspired by true story of Kavita Choudhary's elder sister Kanchan Choudhary who after several hardships went to become the first female Director General of Police. The direction and performance of Kavita Choudhary were applauded and loved by the media and the public. It was so refreshing to see a lady IPS (Indian Police Service) officer in Kavita Choudary's role that was not only humble, but also wanted to perform her work in letter and spirit by going to the public and placing the public's needs ahead of everything else, in the true spirit of a public servant. Also, as happens in the US and other countries, Kavita portrayed her role of as a friend and guardian of the public who the public should want to go to for help, not a policewoman that everyone should fear. In fact in several episodes of this serial, Kalyani Singh IPS chastens her constables and other police officers for speaking with the public in a rude manner. This was very refreshing. When the serial ran in the late 80s and early 90s, there were several suggestions by the public and the media that all police officers including IPS officers could benefit from viewing this serial and learning from it. The other point to be noted is that at the time this serial aired, it was not commonplace for women to seek to join the elite government services in India such as the IAS (Indian Administrative Service), IPS (Indian Police Service) or the IFS (Indian Foreign Service). But this has since changed. As of 2010, the number of women joining the elite Indian government services, especially the IAS, has increased drastically compared to the 1980s and the 1990s.

Afater almost 2 decades of Udaan, we got another very popular tele serial named "Balika Vadhu" which shows a girl getting married at the age of 8, gets tortured by her in-laws (Dadisaa), she quits her studies, after grown-up her husband quits her for another lady, she stays back at her sasra, she gets educated starts working, again forced to marry, quits job again, again gets taunted by Sasra.

I mean in 2 decades are we going any ahead or going back to square one???

Why don't they show SATEE again in national tele?

Debbiee, a nice post. Though was not much interested at that time, I remember my parents watching Udaan very religiously. My mother was very much inspired by the main lead, she wanted my younger sis to join the Police force ( at that time my sis was around 6+ but very daring unlike me ).

After 22+ yrs though Women are better educated & more independent than the before generation, the thought process of the society towards Women hasn't much changed & it's a bitter fact.

Thanks for bringing up this.
Udaan has been my all time favourite show.

I think BV has certain similarities.

But the times have changed. When Udaan was aired there was just one television channel and nw there are countless and the audience tastes have also changed.
Udaan may not do so well in current times

I think BV is going along similar lines.

Anandi is different from Kavita Chaudhary's character even though both have similarities.

Anandi is someone who responds to situations and the situations mould her.
Her career in social work started as of as responding to the evils of the society.
When she saw something wrong happening in front of her eyes she stood up for the person being wronged and stood up against the aggressor. That has been the pattern all through her life starting from childhood days till now.Even standing up for Chanda has happened by chance.Bhaili had come out of that need to help people on a larger scale and not because she wanted to do something with her life.

She is someone who goes with the flow doing good along the way and standing up for what is right and she goes where ever life takes her.You can even say that she is passive.
She dreamt of being a teacher when she saw the change that teacher brought to the lives of people
Then later on she got married and life happened.Bhairon wanted her to do medicine and she started to prepare for the entrance exam too then she realised that it is not she wanted so she opted to do graduation and her aptitude for social work was recognised by the villagers they gave her bigger platform by making her sarpanch.

Now she shifted to her husband's place and by responding to Chanda's needs she opened Bhaili.

Her growth in life outside of her home has always been through responding to people's needs and those people recognised her ability and gave her bigger platforms.Similarly in Udaipur too her bhaili may give her a bigger platform to do what she does best responding to people's needs and trying to meet those needs.

She doesn't have goals in life but she uses her capabilities to make the lives of the people around her a bit better with her abilities.

So whether we like it or not Anandi may not do much on her own but her growth will be a result of the circumstances she has been placed in.

Story of Anandi's growth has to be balnced by a lot of drama as well even her growth needs to be told in a dramatic over the top manner in order to retain the viewers attention. So we may not get a story like Udaan.

Shekhar Kapur made a very good DM.😊

@Debbie thanks for bringing out the fond memories of the serial. It had tremendous impact on our parents & they tried their level best to help the offsprings imbibe the quality of the character. As far as the plight of Anandi is concerned it is her conditioning which is proving to be a stumbling block. At no cost she wants to bring displeasure to her in laws. The situation to some extent is of her own making. First she has to come up with her decisions then only the question of support would arise. We have to stand for our rights & if needed we should fight for it. We can't make everyone happy . Decisions not always comes out as correct. It does'nt mean that we should shudder instead we should stick to it & take pride in our doings.

I don't know much about Udaan but few months back i had read some atricle on change of script in our T.V shows and guess what...even before KSBKBT types shows there were shows which were very very much progressive and all about women empowerment and when i say it's about women empowerment i mean it...wives slapping or leaving their abusive cheating husband and women fighting for their justice and everything
To be honest i feel our T.V shows have got extremely regressive
Hardly any bahu is working independently...to get back to work either she has to be widow or divorcee...the moment some work related track starts so does some saas-bahu drama...we have got latest example from Madhubala...there are also some progressive track but only form family POV and not anything much about woman...PKDH has shown it's main lead quiet courageous enough to answer back and not get stumped by negative character and she was also working after marriage...BV, i would say has gone far more regressive than some of Ekta's serials...not only it's main lead both man and woman are dumb and too noble for their own good but BV now lacks reality...the character sketch of their characters and their behavior in present track just does not seem to match

Thanks aparnauma for the insightful discussion. You exposed another side of Anandi.
Yes I agree to you the main difference between the protagonist in Udaan and Anandi is that Kalyani the IPS officer was goal oriented and Anandi is not.

That might be one of the main reason behind her success yet failure
That might be one of the main reasons why people like Ira and Sanchi illtreat her. She is a nobody for them in front of their highly qualified IAS son/brother.

True librocks.

Only in order to earn TRP they show such regressive stuff.
Why they show even a working woman doing so much of Shringar!!??

In office all the ladies who I find extremely well at their work hardly find time even to put on lipstick. Whereas in all the TV serials the working women come to office wearing CHOLIs of latest design.

Can such a lady really work with all her dedication? 🥱

In Tele serials they show SHAADIs in a grand way as if that's the goal of life for girls. Karwa Chauth, Navratri, Diwali blah blah blah I mean where do we working women find to do Shringar in all these events? Why can't they show something which is realistic?
