Bappi Lahiri sets a new record with Lata Mangeshkar

It's an astonishing feat, and only a composer of Bappi Lahiri's zingy spirit could pull it off.

Says the ebullient Bappi-da "Lata Didi who recorded songs for my father Aparesh Lahiri also sang some of my most beautiful ballads including Saiyyan bina ghar soona(Aangan Ki Kali ), Jaane kyon mujhe(Agreement), Dard ki ragini(Pyaasa) and Sooni Sej sajaa doon(Jyoti) and of course the song Thoda resham lagta hai which became a huge international re-mix hit. Now, Lata Didi will record a song for my son Bappa."

Bappi is naturally very proud. "There have been many instances of Lata Didi singing for father and son composers, like Sachin Dev & Rahul Dev Burman, Roshan & Rajesh Roshan and Chitragupta & Anand-Milind. But never has she sung for a third -generation composer from the same family, or any family. I feel very very blessed."

Bappi-da currently in the news for his presence as a star-judge on the popular Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Little Champs music show, is suddenly very much in demand as a singer. In the last few months he has recorded as many as 15 songs in 15 days for music directors as far-ranging as Vishal-Shekhar and debutant Nitin Shankar for whom Bappi-da has sung for a film called Bombay To Goa.

"Earlier I'd sing only my own songs. Now suddenly, new-generation music composers want my vocals. What can I say? But my proudest moment came when I sang for my song Bappa Lahiri for an untitled film being produced by Sanjay Gupta. It was a very big moment for me, because I had sung for my father and now I got to sing for my son. I don't think any composer had the privilege to sing for both his father and son."

The only other occasion when a father-composer got to sing for his son was when Sachin Dev Burman sang Doli mein bithaiyeeke for R.D in Amar Prem.

That's a matter of perception. I was, frankly speaking, disappointed by her "performance" in Veer-Zaara. Not too sure if I've heard her since then...

I agree with Juggy bhai. I heard Lata didi singing live few years back at Brebourne Stadium and I did notice very distinctly that her voice was not the same...

Asha-ji is perhaps amongst the very few singers whose voice did not affect much with age. I have heard other singers -- Manna Dey, Tatat Mehmood and others in their late seventys and their voices were not the same and that is may be very natural...

I also agree with Juggyji, age has finally seeped into Lataji's voice. Now it is not as mesmerising as before.

thats so true lata has diminished with age

not to take anything away from her greatness
though my own personal favorite is geeta dutt
who though weaker in nuances and sur had a better voice
just listen to thandi hawa or my favorite waqt ne kiya
