Sandalwood actor-turned-film producer, Raghavendra Rajkumar, collapsed while working out at a gym recently. While doctors found a clot in his brain, and took care of the same through surgery, they also stated that extreme physical exertion led to him collapsing during his workout.

This incident brings to the fore the many other reports of people having suffered such health issues in spite of being extremely fitness-conscious.

Fitness experts explain that most people are not able to identify extreme physical exertion on their body until it is too late. "A motivational post that has gone viral on Facebook reads, 'Take care of your body, it's the only place you live in', but there are times when people take it a little too seriously," says software professional and fitness enthusiast Sunil Ramachandran.

He adds, "A friend of mine was overweight and I encouraged him to lose weight. He became a fitness enthusiast, but he has sort of become obsessed with it now " he has lost a lot of weight already, but continues to push himself to lose more. Punishing oneself can have an adverse effect," he adds.

Celebrity fitness expert Deanne Panday explains, "People should understand that each individual is different and, therefore, shouldn't follow anyone blindly. There are people who ape Bollywood actors and hope to achieve their desired results as quickly as possible. They expect to achieve in three months what can only be done in a year." Deanne also feels that a section of society is getting obsessed about fitness. "They take supplements without understanding the requirements of their body. One should get a medical test done every 6-8 months. All gyms should have a heart-rate monitor and people must key in their details at the treadmill. These are small things that are often neglected."
"The answer lies in moderation," says fitness conscious actor Ruslaan Mumtaz, who adds, "Once a person gets obsessed or addicted to anything, it becomes harmful, even if it is something positive like fitness. People mistake a good-looking body for a fit one; it is not all about bulging biceps. The body has its way of telling us how much is too much. All you need to do is to listen to your body."
