Being on internet world for a while, I understand the value of emoticons instead of expressions in writing for example If want to express a good friendly attitude to someone, I used to say * Smiles - Anshuman is okay/cool * now emoticons come in play saying .

Well from the example given above emoticons seems right, but there are different things to communicate on internet world using emoticons, my concern is how right it is to use the actual words then expressive smiley's. Another example if I want to communicate an embarrassment I would use * Anshu understands your point and since his view are incorrect to your would like to say u are right. SIGHS* With emoticons this feeling we can simply express by doing .

To add more Emoticons have larger scope of assumptions, and can be easily misunderstood. An embarrassment can be taken as a blushing.. lol

Now question is whether emoticons communicate the right feelings or expressive words do? i.e. do you prefer mentioning ur feelings in words or take the lazy way of using emoticons? lol...

Welcome to DM!
Emoticons really add beauty to the message we want to convey. We can still convey the message without the usage of the expressions, sometimes the words itself are more sweet or harsh than the icons.
For instance I need not use this 😡 icon to convey my message,I can say "You better undertand your limits".
If I want to reply in a satirical manner I need not use this 😃 icon, I can say " Oh! Thanks!! Say something I don't know".
Excessive usage of these icons really irritates any person as the beauty of the message is lost.
Cheers😊,
Mythili

Mythili, I use red sometimes in replying cos I like the red colour and not necessarily cos I am angry... but I know that writing in red means it shows you are angry but that may not be the case with everybody like it is with me cos I used red cos I like that colour....

As to the topic.. initially we use to write our emotions in between * but now with the advent of various icons.. it is easier to input those.. but I agree with Mythili that excessive use of icons sometimes irritates and makes reading difficult and the message the person wants to put forth is lost.

I prefer using words to emotions or smily faces. Because word or writing conveys more then any emotion can. And sometimes, lyk Mythili pointed out, that the emotions can be misunderstood. 😊

I prefer words myself, as they impart a meaning which emoticons cant convey, at least not as well as words do. But, recently, on IF, we learnt that many of us who do not use emoticons in their post, are considered to be "strict" with no "feelings" as opposed to those who are liberal with the use of emoticons.

Someone whose posts are full of lols are regarded as funny, whereas words in humour are often not understood.

On a personal pov, I would not use emoticons as much as words, as Mythili pointed out above, words convey a whole wealth of meaning, while the same emoticons can leave you confused on the intent.

As with everything else.. emotions have become a way of life in the web world... We are taking easy way out by inputting various icons instead of words...

If the icons are put instead of words, then the reader will guess whatever he/she feels about the icons in a particular sentence but the writer may have intended it for different purpose, so in that sense we may not be communicating clearly so as to what we want to say.

But if the writer after explaining properly whatever he/she wants to convey in words and then puts an icon after the completion of the sentence or in between also... then it is ok... cos sometimes it is necessary to put them in order to make the reader understand that the writer is writing in a joking manner or not writing/saying it in a harsh manner.

Like icons, sometimes a sentence fully explained in words can also be taken differently by the one person (reader) but not intended by the writer. It depends upon how the tone of a sentence is taken by the reader... and if by putting a smiley or wink after explanation, it is conveyed that it was in good humour then in such situations icons are ok but they should not replace words....
