OKAY, SO BEFORE WRITING MY PREDICTION, I JUST WANT TO LET EVERYONE KNOW THAT TODAY (OCT 14) IS MY BIRTHDAY!😃
Okay, so now it's prediction time!
This Wednesday will see the release of Akshay Kumar's film BOSS. This film is very important for Akki for a few reasons...
-Firstly, BOSS HAS to work at the box office for Akshay Kumar to gain back some of his lost momentum. His last film, ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAI DOBARA, was a huge film but failed at the box office which was a major setback for Akki. Even his release before that (SPECIAL 26), although appreciated, did not enter the 100 crore club. Same with his film before that, KHILADI 786 which really under-performed at the box office.
-Secondly, the other "A" list actors have had some HUGE grossers recently. SRK, Salman, Aamir and Ranbir have all reached near/gone past the 200 crore mark with their respective films. Akshay ought to have a film get somewhere near the 200 crore mark in order to stay in the same league as other A list actors.
The theatrical trailer of BOSS released a while back and got a postive response, with some feeling that this will be another monstrous success like ROWDY RATHORE for Akshay. The songs have also gotten a postive response, especially the title track, Party All Night, and Hum Na Thode. These songs have been making their presence felt in music charts.
On the other hand, there are also those who feel that the film is just a combination of ROWDY RATHORE and KHILADI 786 and therefore will be nothing new and nothing special.
So, do I think that it will go the ROWDY RATHORE way (huge success) or the KHILADI 786 way (under-performer)? Well, I think it will be somewhere in between the two films. On one hand, BOSS seems like it has a story that will be liked by the public (like ROWDY RATHORE) but on the other hand it does seem like the film's focus is just on Akshay and him doing cartoonish (audience may find it cartoonish) comedy/action, like KHILADI 786.
There are two other things to point out. One thing is that director Anthony D'Souza's last directorial venture BLUE (2009) did not do well at the box office and it's content was not appreciated. Also, the side romantic track in BOSS (the love track featuring the newcomers) could cause boredom for the audience. So, these two factors could have a negative effect on BOSS.
Opening wise, the film is bound to get a terrific opening at the box office (especially at mass centres), because of the national holiday, Akshay Kumar in comedy-action avatar, and the promos/songs getting a good response. Sonakshi's appearance may also benefit the opening even more. After that, I think the film might get a mixed word of mouth. I think just like several other masala films released recently, BOSS will also under-perform in Delhi and Punjab.
Also, keep in mind that a hurricane is coming at the box office in 2 weeks, and that hurricane is called KRRISH 3.
My Box Office Predictions for BOSS:
Opening Day: 20 crores net approx.
Opening 5 Day Weekend: 70 crores net approx.
Lifetime Collections: 100+ crores net
Overall Box Office Verdict: Hit
I feel that the film will collect 100 crores but just a little bit more than 100 crores (maybe few crores higher). It will almost be like touch-and-go for 100 crores.
