I don't even know why I am actually following this really irritating serial.
This is perhaps the only serial where there is no character that I actually like (aside from the little girl who has disappeared for now). Aside from the bad acting by most of the actors (aside from Sudha Chandran & the grandmother) and the umpteen slo-mo close-ups of the actors' faces, the part that really exasperates me is the characterizations especially that of the female lead. So much so that I need to rant about it.
What an extremely unappealing female protagonist. I get that Seetha is supposed to be good-natured; practically a paragon of virtue or something. And so, she is supposed to be naive. But what I see is not naivety. It is sheer stupidity. Probably the most stupid female protagonist I've seen so far on television.
Seetha is such an imbecile that she cannot even seem to see that her aunt and cousin do not care about her from the way that they treated her as a servant in their house to all the scoldings. Just because suddenly they speak to her nicely every now and then, she seems to think that they care for her. In fact, they say one thing to her and immediately in front of others say another thing. That in itself should tell her that her aunt and cousin are two-faced. And yet she still occasionally says that they are good people.
It also irritates me that she is so passive and is unwilling to speak up on several occasions. She has made some mistakes (cannot remember them now) but keep lamenting that why are such bad things happening to her when she has not done any mistakes.
This serial seems so regressive. As a feminist, I am so vexed by some of the stuff that are said and done. Chitradevi thinks that a woman is around to only serve her husband. The whole slapping incident with Chitradevi not even properly reprimanding Raam properly.
The good characters also seem to be stupid or naive (Seetha, Sumitra, Ravi). The bad characters are scheming but in a foolish way (Priya, her mother, Kalpana). Raam is a wuss. The grandmother seems ok, probably the only character I am neutral towards. Everyone else is annoying. Chitradevi at least is a more complex character with her flaws and all. I wish that there are characters who are good-natured and intelligent at the same time.
I wonder if the Hindi serial this was based on also has such a idiotic female protagonist and mostly unlikeable characters.
Thinking back, I think that I was just watching this serial to see what Chitradevi would do to counter the scheming of the aunt and her daughter. I am done with this serial now after watching today's episode with Chitradevi warning Seetha about her aunt and Seetha still listening to her aunt.
