In the last few years, we have seen several and many newcomers who have migrated from the South into Bollywood, most of them are decent actors too...the most popular transfers being Asin, lleana, Dhanush etc ...and of course there are many others.
What I find annoying is that these "experienced" actors come to Bollywood and pick up newcomer awards. I understand that the south and Hindi cinema is separated by language, but is it still not collectively apart of "Indian" cinema? For god sakes, Asin and Ileana have won best actress awards down south and then they come here and get best newcomer? How does that make sense.
Asin winning over Anushka Sharma...and lleana winning over Diana Penty/Alia Bhatt who are REAL and actual newcomers, I just find it wrong.
Now Dhanush is being prepped up to win the best newcomer award, which is just beyond ridiculous to me, he's been working in Tamil movies since 2002! There is no way he is a newcomer.
And for those who think it is acceptable for these individuals to win, I just have a question ( I don't know the answer to it myself), when actresses like Aishwarya or Deepika go down south and do Tamil movies, do they also get nominated for "best newcomer"?
Tomorrow if a Hollywood star...lets say Leonardo Dicaprio comes and acts in Hindi movie, will be nominated for best newcomer too?
PS: Just want to clarify, I am not doubting the acting capabilities of anyone mentioned above, I am simply pointing out a system that I dislike. Please share you opinions too :)

absolutely agree..
i just said the same thing in another thread , that these south stars are superstars intheir respective industries... if they are to be awarded , why not nominate them in best actor category! as if bolly wood only belongs to khans and kapoors .. all others are newcomers😆

Well it's a flaw in the awards system, how are they responsible for it?! And frankly , I think Dhanush needs to be nominated in the best actors category & not Best debut , but the organizers may not want him in the main category & best debut is more a consolation prize😉 Unfair, but I & you don't control it, do we?! Same as with the critics awards category!

I completely concur I don't see the point of a seasoned actor like Dhanush competing in the best debut category with newcomers like Sushant. Ileana and Asin too (although not too sure about their star status in the southern film industry)
Although knowing these idiot award shows I can guarantee you that they will give the debut award to Dhanush as a consolation prize for not nominating him in the best actor category as he rightly deserves, BUT as I said in the other thread seeing that he's Rajni's son in law and also how he was hyped with Kolaveri di and even performed at some award shows for that they might just give him a random "contribution to bollywood" type award and have him go with that.

Big B also got some TV newcomer awards. So big deal!😆
That way if you look at it many real BW newcomers arent so. Ayushman and Sushant come with lots of TV experience. Ayushman is a TV veteran and Sushant if I remember right won lots of Best Actor awards for his TV role. Deepika had acted in a Kannada movie before she debuted in BW, Ash to acted in some Tamil movies. Most non starkids have some experience or the other atleast some modelling experience. So leaving out people with any kind of experience will finally only make starkids eligible for the newcomer awards.

First of all, there will never come a day when my Leonardo DiCarpio does a BW film--never. 😆

Secondly, I agree but let's remember that BW awards are weird as hell. I remember this till time Kamal Hassan or someone was nominated for Best Actor AND Best Supporting Actor for the SAME film at the SAME award show...W*F??!

And I remember when they used to give out Best Comedian and Best VIllain awards...but people, an actor can be a villian, comedian, hero, anti-hero and still be nominated as BEST LEAD. Genre doesn't matter.

So you see, it's all pretty bogus. I personally don't think they should be but they were the BETTER actors so its a weird conundrum. I guess since they're "new" to hindi cinema it's fine in technical terms. However, it's not really fair. But then again when are awards ever really fair?! 😆

Well Ayushman is a newcomer, he has never acted in any tv serials or anything. He was just as host / vj on TV for a few reality shows, that hardly qualifies someone to be "experienced" in acting. Its two completely different positions. That's like saying if Shreya Ghoshal comes and does a movie that she wouldn't be classified as a newcomer, of course she would. Singing has no relation to acting...just like hosting doesn't.
As for Sushant, yes he does have an acting background, but the television industry operates separately. Even though there is a camera and an actor involved, its a completely different industry and the way things are done are different. There is a huge difference on being a tv serial and being on the big screen. Huge.

Big B never won debut awards for his TV stint. He was given awards for best TV host and other categories like that. In fact, awards were especially created for Amitabh. I am sure even for Anil Kapoor some special award will be created and he will be praised to no end in award ceremonies for changing the face of Indian TV. The superstars of Bollywood are treated as superstars even on TV.

@ TM: I personally feel nominating established actors of regional films for debut awards just showcases how Bollywood thinks itself to be superior from other film industries. It gives the impression that the actor's work in regional films is insignificant compared to his/her GRAND Bollywood debut. Nominating a National Award winning actor for best debut is a joke. Dhanush deserves the same respect at Bollywood award ceremonies as Shahrukh would get if he debuts in a Tamil film. I am sure eyebrows will be raised if Amitabh and Shahrukh will be nominated for debut awards if they work in Tamil cinema. Dhanush is at par with established actors of Bollywood, so why any different for him? He deserves best actor nomination for his role in Ranjhanaa because IMO he was far superior than the BW stars in their respective films this year.

TV and movies are different mediums so I do not see the comparison. If tomorrow a theatre actor debuts, will he not deserve to be nominated for best debut? If that is the criteria then only star-sons should deserve to be nominated for best debut award category as only they get films with the least amount of experience. Be born to a film family, and you get a film and the award too.

If Dhanush indeed wins the best debut award, I do not mind because he was brilliant in Ranjhanaa but I think he deserves far more!

agreed totally,
I find it unfair, it should be given to the ones who are actually new comers, who did their first debut.
