BB is not a platform that actively seeks to raise social consciousness. Yet with Rajat BB is bringing to fore a problem that receives very little recognition and much derision - Obesity.
Almost every one has been mocking Rajat for his constant crying and inability to participate. However what Rajat is suffering from is a serious medical condition - a life threatening disease.
It is a fact that India is not only home to 40% of the malnourished population in world. As much as 5% of India's population suffers from Morbid Obesity.
Morbid obesity is a serious health condition that can interfere with basic physical functions such as breathing or walking. Those who are morbidly obese are at greater risk for illnesses including diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea (stop breathing altogether for short periods of time during sleep), hypoventilation (inability to breathe rapidly enough or deeply enough, resulting in low blood oxygen levels and high blood carbon dioxide) gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD (stomach acids entering the esophagus), gallstones, osteoarthritis, heart disease, and cancer.
With Rajat we have seen symptoms of GERD, Sleep Apnea, Hypoventilation, High BP and Severe Depression.
Asking for Coffee or to meet his daughter is not a joke - it is his way of alleviating morbid depression.
His inability to breathe, swollen feet, inability to sleep at night is all a manifestation of increasing Hypoventilation.
The acidity is not a well-planned drama but probably an attack of GERD.
Like Tanisha and Arman stated repeatedly - Rajat is a sick man and keeping him in the house might be fatal. He should've been sent back when the condition first manifested itself. Somewhere a man's life has been put at risk and we are all party to it.
And yet this is a wake-up call to all of us - to recognize the symptoms of the disease in the people around us and perhaps show some empathy instead of heaping ridicule.
