are bringing in powerful baddies, especially male antagonists, whose only motto seems to be thinking of ways to make the lives of the protagonists as miserable as they can in their own devious, manipulative ways. Be it for love, wealth, ego or lust, these bad guys are stooping to new lows to create trouble for the leads of the show.
Prashant Bhatt, fiction head of a popular Hindi GEC, says, "When it comes to negative characters on screen, there should be no caricatures. That TV is ruled by women is true, but now, even RK is as popular as Madhubala. So now the audiences are ready to accept male antagonists also."
Actor Aanshul Trivedi of Saraswatichandra says, "The negative character sketch depends completely on the storyline. These characters come under two categories " the one with a past and the other without a flashback, who are just mean. My character has a past and hence the effect on it on him."
Male antagonists' portrayal depends a lot on the character sketch. Producer Rupali Guha says, "It all depends on where these antagonists come from. Tej in Uttaran was OTT but he grabbed more eyeballs. Abhimanyu in Do Dil Bandhe... is rich and ambitious so he is more urbane and plays his cards well." It seems telly vamps are on a short break!
Type: Evil husband These husbands or husbands-to-be either have dollar signs in their eyes or sometimes, also lust after other girls, so the poor neglected wifey has no option but to find solace in the arms of another man (who's often the male lead). This of course, hurts the villain's ego even more and he shows some greyer shades. It's a vicious circle!
Who: Pramad in Saraswatichandra Actor: Aanshul Trivedi Pramad is the typical spoilt rich brat who finds himself forcibly married to a woman of his parents' choice even when he's having a clandestine affair with the hired help. So he's taken the predictable route: he's physically assaulting his wife, trying to dig out skeletons from her cupboard to traumatise her. Nostrils flaring, eyes narrowed, he hurls cups, and bottles at his wife. He's seems like a telly caricature of a 70s Bollywood baddie.
Who: Bobby in Ek Nanad Ki Khushiyon Ki Chaabi Meri Bhabhi Actor: Bharat Chawda He's a smooth operator with honey dripping from his tongue even as he plans to stab his family in their backs (figuratively speaking of course). Bobby from Meri Bhabhi might have started off as a positive character, but has overnight shown his pure black shades and emerged as the conniving man who steals a small fortune from his wife and dumps her. Not just that, he's taken her to court and is accusing her of having committed adultery ruining her reputation for good.
Who: Abhimanyu in Do Dil Bandhe Ek Dori Se Actor: Akshat Gupta His 'fake love' for heiress Shivani (Mansi Shrivastav) has been exposed and his true colours have been revealed in a dramatic twist of storyline. Now that Miss Moneybags has run away with the hulky bodyguard Raghu to save her ancestral property, Abhimanyu is making elaborate plans to bump off Raghu.
Type: Step Daddy/Uncleji From a wicked stepfather to nasty Mamaji, a powerful Tauji and the other older men in the house, planning and plotting has no age bar. Here are a couple of them trying to use their years of wisdom to make the live of the leads miserable.
Who: Kuku Bhatia in Madhubala Ek Ishq Ek Junoon Actor: Raza Murad The evil stepfather, Kukuji, in Madhubala... much hated by RK (played by Vivian Dsena) has just made a dramatic comeback as a meaner and more manipulative schemester who's now joined forces with all the other baddies on the show, from his weak spined son, the evil producer, the ambitious star to get even with his step son. The mercurial hero finds the going tough as the smirking step daddy coolly sips tea, recites poems and plans his next devious moves.
Who: Tauji in Ek Boond Ishq Actor: Vishwajeet Pradhan Tauji, played by Vishwajeet Pradhan, lives like a sadhu and does saadhna in a palatial temple, which the citizens of Bhopal don't dare to trespass even in their dreams. An eunuch, he is trying hard to keep this fact hidden from the world, when the actress steps into his abode and discovers his dirty secrets. Any resemblance to Prashant Narayanan in Murder 2 is coincidental of course!
Type: The immoral devar From trying to get their beloved bade bhaiya's position in the great Indian Hum Saath Saath Hai kind of family to lusting after their bhabhi, these voyeuristic boys have no qualms about showing off their sometimes all-black shades on screen.
Who: Ankit in Sanskaar Dharohar Apnon Ki Actor: Avinash Mukherjee Being the younger son of the household and a loser, Ankit is the typical spoilt little boy who's fed up of being second fiddle in his family. So he's now teamed up with the female antagonist Bharti and has not only thrown the protagonists out of their home, but is also responsible for family feuds and is now a rebel without a pause, the script makes him get a sudden change of heart overnight.
Who: Randeep in Bani Ishq Da Kalma Actor: Paras Singh Minhas Another wicked brother-in-law, here is one man who is shamelessly lusting after his sis-in-law is Randeep. As the show tries to incorporate the recent incidents of crime against women and send out a social message, so negative is his character that he even goes to the extent of trying to molest her.
