Well written post my friend!
Maharana Uday Sing or Rana Sangha or king of Amer, all Rajput kings had ego problem. Perhaps they wanted to show their nation that they are the most fair rulers on earth and would serve justice in all circumstances.
Shakti Sigh was a stubborn prince who wanted to become the King of Mewar. I think his mom and youngest queen Batiyani has to be blamed for Shakti Singh's conduct and behaviour.
History tells us that even Uday Singh forgot his promise in his last days before his death and wanted Batiyani's son Jagmal to succeed him but after Uday Singh's death the senior Ministers wanted Pratap Sigh to be their King as time was very tough and difficult. In their opinion Prince Jagmal would have been a weak King. Shakti Singh and Sagar Singh did not support Pratap at that time and jained King of Delhi Akbar's army.
At the famous battle of Haldi Ghati which was fought on June 21, 1576, both Shakti Singh and Sagar Singh fought against Pratap Sigh from Mugal Army. When Pratap was trying to kill Raja Maan Sigh of Amer in that battle who was also fighting from Mugal side, his horse Chetak got injured on his thigh from Maan Sigh's Elephant sword called mardana. Pratap had no choice when his generals advised him to flee the field so as to be able to fight another day. As Pratap was escaping the field, two Afghan worriers followed him. Shakti Sigh spotted them and realized that his own brother was in danger. Pratap could not go more than 2 miles when Chetak collapsed. Shakti Singh went after them and killed those two Afghan soldiers. Shakti hugged Pratap and apologised for his behaviour. Both brothers had tears in their eyes. Shakti gave his Horse Unkar to Pratap and Pratap vanished in dense forest.
I still remember the poem I read in my grade 6 Hindi text book:
Ran beech chori bhar bhar kar chetak ban gaya nirala tha,
Rana Pratap ke Ghore se, par gaya hawa ka paala tha.
Great history, great people of Rajastan but unfortunately some Rajas gave their daughters to Mugals in marriages at the name of friendship.
Pratap Sigh was a Sisodiya Rajpot. These Rajpot clans - Sisodiyas, Chauhan, Rathor, Tomar, tanwar, Parmar, katoch, Solanki, Pundir, Rawat, Bist etc later settled in UP, Punjab, Hariyana, Garhwal and MP. Here in Canada I was surprised to see some of my Muslim friends from Pakistan have these last names, that mean they are also Rajputs who had adopted Islam some 300 - 500 years ago.
