I've always held a disdain for Kajol and my impression of her has dipped further after watching her on last night's episode of Koffee With Karan.
As an actress, I've always felt she was terribly overrated, someone who just got lucky being at the right place at the right time.
The woman is spunky (overbearingly so) with some element of natural acting, that's it! As an actress, I don't give her much credit, as she's merely played herself each time.
Also, her approach to her craft has been very casual (though she was lucky to be mostly in safe hands), precisely one of the reasons why Aamir Khan hated her during their Ishq days. While she found him 'stuck up' and 'difficult', he called her 'loud', 'indisciplined' and 'unprofessional'.
It's not only Aamir who was disgruntled at her flippant ways. Rakesh Roshan, who directed her in Karan Arjun, was appalled at how she would butt in and crack a joke with Shah Rukh right when the director was trying to explain a scene to his hero. A clear indication that she had scant respect for her craft and was merely bidding time till she got married.
All this can be forgiven but what cannot be, is trying to pull down an upcoming actress, especially when she happens to be your own cousin. Tanuja, along with Kajol and Tanisha have always treated this less privileged cousin and her family with contempt. Obviously, the family did not expect Rani to be a huge star with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, one of the reasons Kajol did not protest her being in the film. However, once Rani was accepted and she started doing stage shows on the film's songs, the nasty cousin couldn't resist a jibe saying 'Oh, she's milking the film for all its worth'!
Later, she deliberately didn't invite Rani for her wedding, thereby making her dislike for her younger cousin crystal clear. And poor Rani was left to answer the embarrasing question by the media.
Considering this histrory, it must have given Kajol a major heartburn to see Rani steadily rising in the ranks. While her sister Tanisha was struggling for good break, Rani went on from strength to strength and soon even made Kajol's repertoire look pale. She had a Black, Hum Tum, Saathiya, Veer Zaara, Bunti Aur Babli…
The two women met yesterday on Koffee With Karan, and their hatred for each other was there for all to see. Rani was very silent and left Kajol to do all the jabbering. SRK was his dapper self, coming up with smart one-liners and trying to do a balancing act between the women. Kajol was her petty, rude self, constantly making Rani seem like the outsider by acting over friendly with SRK. To the latter's credit, he didn't fall for it and showered Rani with equal attention. (I'm beginning to love SRK)
When Karan referred to the two women as 'Mukherjees', Kajol sprang up to correct him and said, 'I'm Devgan, thank you!' (And she's referred to by a section of the media as a 'thinking man's actress'… I shudder!)
Very obviously, Rani has given up on this haughty, overbearing elder cousin of hers and preferred to stay silent, though she was clearly uncomfortable.
As for Kajol, well, you may think you have everything you need but clearly you have no compassion or grace, qualities which define a woman!
