Chapter 9 - Marriage Vows

Sajna hai mujhe, sajna ke liye
Jara uljhi latein sanwaar loon
Har ang ka rang nikhaar loon ... Sajna hai mujhe ...

The song played in background as Kria looked at herself in the washroom mirror .. Rey had set the stereo in the washroom as Kria always loved to listen to songs while taking a bath ..

But ... today she couldn't even look at herself in the mirror .. the song was so apt for the current situation .. she couldn't help but hum the song and blush and the smile on her face was just not ready to leave her ..

She slowly took her clothes off , soaked herself in the warm water with her favorite lavender essential oil , inhaling deeply .. closed her eyes .. trying to relax herself and her racing heart beat which was waiting for the time to just pass and then she would see Rey .. after being away from him for the longest time in her life .. a week which equaled an era for her ..

She sighed and smiled ..

On one hand she had missed Rey a lot .. but on the other hand .. this one week of separation had brought them very close .. especially for Kria .. this was a boon in disguise .. She had never felt so close to anyone like how she felt for Rey ,right now .. she had opened up easily to him when they talked for hours on the phone .. a reason she attributed to this change was that she didn't see him face to face .. she simply heard him .. she felt him and she imagined him .. and somewhere these evoked new feelings in her .. feelings which she knew were deep and she had never felt before ..

He called her up in the morning .. and they talked till she went to office .. then he called her in the night and they talked till she drifted off to sleep with her phone still hung to her ear ..

As she shampooed her hair , she blushed remembering their last conversation , just before he sat in the plane to come back to India ..

"Kria .. I want to see you very badly .. " a desperate Rey cooed in the phone making Kria literally hide her face in her palms .. She quickly recovered and tried to sound calm ..

"Rey .. just thode ghante ki hi toh baat hai .. phir aap mujhe dekh sakte hain .. "

"Tum aaj ghar par hi rahogi na .. "

"Hmm .. aaj maine chutti li hai .. aur pata hai .. it's been raining from morning .. " she giggled ..

She just heard his sigh ..

"I can't wait , Kria .. why can't I fly and come to you in a jiffy ?" he asked sounding like a 4 year old kid ..

She laughed .. "You will be flying only and coming to me .. " she couldn't help but laugh again ..

When she sensed there was complete silence from the other end .. she stopped .. "Rey .. " she called with concern ..

"Tumhe pata nahi hai .. " and he stopped mid-way .. he sounded very somber ...

"I know Rey .. I understand .. even I can't wait to be in your arms .. " she honestly said .. without fighting with her feelings .. or hiding her emotions .. why should she ? He was her husband and more than that .. she had realized what he meant to her ..

This was what he wanted to hear from her .. and the minute she said these words .. he smiled contently ..

"Kria .. tum kya pahen ne wali ho ?" he asked innocently ..

"Aap batayiye , kya pahenu ," she paused and squeezed her eyes shut " aapke liye ?" she could hear him smile thru the phone ..

"Umm .. Wear that white saree of yours .. the one which has a simple border of small silver sequins .. you would look beautiful in it .."

"ok .."

"Mujhe tumse kuch kehna hai .. " he said again in a serious baritone ..

"Haan .. kahiye .. "

He took a deep breath .."Nahi , phone pe nahi .. I will come and say it .. " and she knew what he wanted to say .. the same thing she was desperate to hear from him .. her heart had heard those words .. just her ears needed them .. her own heart had responded to him .. and now the same words were on her lips .. she was holding them to her dear self so that she could say them to him ..

"Mujhe bhi .. " she said shyly .. but stopped as she heard the request from the airhostess to switch off their mobile phones as the plane was ready to take off ..

"Kria .. tumhe bhi kya .. " Rey urged her to go on ..

"Kuch nahi .. aap bas jaldi aa jayiye "

"Kria .. yes .. I will come back soon .. "

It was now just half an hour left for his plane to land .. then it would take him around an hour to come home .. so she had decided to take a bath ... get ready ..

As she was drying herself she heard her cell ring outside in the bedroom .. quickly she wrapped the towel around herself and ran in her half-wet state to pick the phone ..

Since water was dripping from her legs .. before she could reach the bed .. she slipped and stumbled near the bed .. in the process to save herself .. her one hand went to hold the bed for support and the other hand clutched on to the towel near her bosom and she fell on her side on the carpet near the bed ..

The cell had stopped ringing by then .. she slowly gathered herself and was going to stand up when she noticed the small black and golden beads on the white carpet ..

She suddenly forgot everything and panicked and the only word that came out of her dry mouth was "Rey " .. her mangalsutra had broken and its beads were lying on the carpet .. she swiftly collected all the beads and put them in a bowl on her dressing table ..

Then she started searching frantically in her drawers only to realize after a while that her other mangalsutra was kept in the bank locker ..

She looked up in the mirror only find herself crying bitterly and holding a few black beads tightly in her palm ..

She didn't know what to do .. she took her cell and dialed her Bua ..

"Buaji .. Buaaji .. " she didn't greet her .. even before her Bua could speak .. she kept chanting her name and sobbing on the phone ..

"Kria .. beta. . kya hua .. " Her bua got worried hearing her cry ..

"Buaji .. " she couldn't speak anything else ..

"Kria .. batao beta.. kya hua .. "

"Mera man .. mangalsutra .. " she finally stammered out ... "toot .. "

Her bua didn't need any more explanation from her ..

"Kria .. Kria .. suno meri baat .. kuch nahi hua .. thik hai .. "

"Nahi .. " she tried to intervene ..

"Kria .. suno meri baat .. pehele tum rona bandh karo .. toot gaya na .. usse thik karwa lena .. kuch nahi hoga .. suna tumne .. " she spoke firmly ..

"But .. "

"Aise waise koi bhi khayal dil mein , dimag mein mat lana .. "

"But .. Buaji .. mujhe bahut darr lag raha hai .. Rey .. " she could hardly get words out of her mouth ..

"Kria .. mujhe poora vishwas hai .. Rey ko kuch nahi hoga .. samjhi tum .. "

Hearing her Bua's strong and steady voice made Kria a bit calm but not altogether relaxed ..

Rey had called 4 times on her cell .. but when she tried to call back , she couldn't reach him as his cell was switched off ..

She frowned and then she saw the time and realized that he must have landed and so he must have called to inform her ..

Kria wore her saree and then took a thread and slid a few black beads thru them and then tied it around her neck to assure her restless heart that everything will be fine .. but still her heart was not convinced ..

"Kria Beta .. "

"Jee Maa "

"Rey ne mujhe call kiya tha batane ke liye that , he has landed and has taken a taxi .. his cell battery is dead .. he called you just as he landed but maybe you didn't hear the call .. "

"Haan Maa. . actually I was in the washroom .. "

"Thik hai .. he might take more time to reach home as its raining heavily and traffic bhi ho sakta hai .. "

"Ok .. "

"He said , he will try to call you from some PCO in between "

"Ok "

"Aur ek baat .. hum aaj raat ko yehi rahenge as yahan pe bhi raston pe bahut paani bhar gaya hai .. even Vicky is staying back in office .. "

"Oh ... itna paani .. " she didn't quite understand how is this possible ..

"Aree tumhe Mumbai ki baarish ka pata nahi hai na .. aaj subha se ho rahi hai na .. sab trains , buses bandh ho gayi hain and then you know how these roads are and the drainage system .. sab jagah pani hi pani bhar gaya hai .. "

"Ok ... " she sounded very low and deep in thoughts ..

"Tum theek ho na .. " her mother in law asked with concern ..

"Haan Maa. .. " she lied immediately .. she was actually very scared .. "Rey .. " she murmured ..

"Airport road kaafi accha hai .. naya hai na .. so traffic rahega .. but don't worry .. Rey aa jayega .. maybe late .. "

"Hmm "

It was 6 in the evening .. more than 2 hours from the time , Rey left airport .. she was looking out of the window at the rain pouring heavily on her window panes ..

She hadn't left even for a second ,the small thread which she had tied around her neck .. it was securely hidden in her palm .. as opposed to the tears which were flowing from her eyes ..

"Bitiya .. " Ramu Kaka called her ..

"Jee .. "

"Kya hum ghar jaldi ja sakte hain .. bahut barsaat hai .. aur sab jagah paani bhar raha hai .. "

"Haan haan .. aap jayiye .. "

"Bitiya .. raat ka khana bana diya hai .. sab kitchen mein rakha hai .. "

"Sukhriya .. "

Never in her life Kria had felt so alone , so afraid .. She believed in almighty .. she prayed everyday religiously but today ,she felt her own belief was at stake ..

She sat in the small mandir in the house still holding the black beads as if they were the only beads meant to give her the strength she needed badly right now ..

She looked at the smiling and serene face of the idol and then stared at the diya which was burning steadily and continuously and its tip flickering intermittently..

She couldn't help but compare it to her holy marriage fire as she remembered walking around it taking her marriage vows with Rey ..

They were two strangers who had taken the vows and were secured in the eternal bond of marriage ..

They were not in love with each other when they had taken the vows .. but now when she recollected , she felt they had taken those vows to be together till eternity ..

She knew what each vow meant .. but now she felt she truly understood the meaning behind each and every word as she compared incidents , conversations which had occurred between her and Rey with the vows they had taken ..

She remembered as Rey promised to take care of her , provide for her welfare and happiness .. He had taken note of even her smallest wish before she had even voiced it .. wearing her Mom's bangles was something she had always wanted and she knew maybe her mother in law or her husband might not approve .. but before even saying a word , he had understood her feelings ..

She in turn had vowed to respect his family members and love them as she her own and she knew with Rey by her side she would be able to easily keep this balance ..

Protecting her was what he promised and yes he in his own way was taking her fears away from her .. he had earned her trust and was truly showering his undivided attention on her .. he had made it known in words that there was no one before her and that she was the only one for him ...

She had declared that she would be his courage and strength and when she saw his eyes full of admiration for her .. his generous compliments touched her heart and she felt nothing but the queen of his world ..

They had promised for a prosperous future together and had wished for noble children ..

She blushed at that thought .. she had never thought so much about the future .. but with Rey she could easily envision a fulfilling and satisfying family and life ..

Like any other young girl ,she too had thought of a loving and caring husband and an affectionate family .. she really felt lucky and blessed to have a husband like Rey .. she had never felt anything for any other man before .. she could now feel her heart beat only for him and knew it would keep doing it for the rest of her life ...

Rey had mentioned to her that she was his happiness charm .. he said he felt eternal joy when she smiled and he felt it was his sole duty never to let that smile fade from her face ..

She could do nothing but wish that she never wants to be the reason for any sadness in his life .. and if at all there comes a time in his life where he is low , she knew she would do anything to remove that grief forever ..

When Rey had taken that vow that his wife would be his best friend and well-wisher , she was not sure how can a wife play this role .. generally we already have friends from school or college who are our best friends for life .. suddenly husband-wife relation turning into best-friends in an arranged marriage was something she couldn't fathom .. but when Rey had extended his hand for friendship on their wedding night , she knew he was different , he was a person who wanted his wife to know him as a friend first , trust him and then love him ..

Now she wanted to be the only one to fulfill all his wishes ..

She remembered how she had felt at that time when they had taken the vow to be together forever .. they wanted a blessing for long lived of togetherness .. a long lasting relationship enriched with love , understanding ,trust and loyalty .. nothing had even crossed her mind about the number of years in a life time ..

But at this very moment waiting impatiently for Rey to come .. a little fear creeping in her heart about he being in some trouble , her tears praying for his well-being and safety ..

She knew what she wanted .. she knew even a lifetime with Rey would not be enough for her .. she wanted more ..

She silently looked at the black beads of her mangalsutra and desperately prayed that everything is all right with Rey ..

"Kria Didi jaldi aayiye , Rey Saab aa gaye .. " Came the Watchman's loud and anxious call to her from the main door ..

Even though she had tears running down her cheeks .. , she quickly opened her eyes and looked at the smiling eyes of the almighty in front of her .. she felt as if her prayers were answered .. her lips curved into a blissful smile ,she folded her hands and bent her head to offer her gratitude and wiped her tears and ran to greet her husband ..

But , nothing could have prepared a wife to face the sight which unfolded into front of her .. She stood rooted on her spot ..

Or maybe the time she had spent contemplating about her marriage was a sign that , it was now going to be a strenuous test for her , wherein she would be tested on her inner strength and belief and patience ..

She found the watchman supporting an almost unconscious Rey by his shoulders as they both staggered in by the main door ..

She couldn't recognize the man whom the watchman claimed to be his Rey saab .. she almost felt like seeing a half-dead body being dragged by the watchman .. he was totally drenched in the dirty rain water .. , his body barely taking any of his weight , his clothes were torn , his body was covered with filthy mud .. , even with his body covered with muck ,she still saw blood oozing out from various part of his bruised body .. "Kria .. " as he feebly called out to her in an unrecognizable and inaudible whisper trying with all the power he had to keep his heavy eyelids open to look at her .. his face totally drained out of life .. "I .. " he tried again as he stretched his one arm towards her ...

"REY" She ran towards him to hold him , his cold and numb fingers trying to clutch as much as of Kria as he could , but she simply felt his fingers slithering down from her face , to her shoulders to her hands as he fell motionless on her feet ..
