Winning Trends
- Back to back wins (two or more consecutive wins in as many award years) are a big trend in this category. Of the 13 people above who have won multiple best actor Clares, 6 have won back to back awards: Dilip Kumar (1956, 1957, 1958), Rajesh Khanna (1971, 1972), Sanjeev Kumar (1976, 1977), Amitabh Bachchan (1978, 1979), Naseeruddin Shah (1981, 1982), and Shahrukh Khan (1998, 1999). Dilip Kumar is the only actor till date to have won three back to back Best Actor trophies. Devdas is the winningest role with two wins - Dilip Kumar in 1957 and Shahrukh Khan in 2003.
- Comedy is the most ignored genre for best actor awards. Only 5 best actor trophies have ever been awarded for comic/partially comic roles. Dilip Kumar (Ram Aur Shyam), Shammi Kapoor (Brahmachari), Sanjeev Kumar (Arjun Pandit), Amitabh Bachchan (Amar Akbar Anthony), and Amol Palekar (Gol Maal). Moreover, since Govinda's 2000 (or Saif Ali Khan's 2002) award for Best Comedian, even mainstream heroes are given Best Comedian award rather than Best Actor. So it's even tougher to win a Best Actor trophy in a comic role today.
Interesting Facts and Other Oddities
- Only three actors have won the Best Actor award for their debut performances - Rishi Kapoor for Bobby, Anupam Kher for Saaransh and Hrithik Roshan for Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai. Longest time lapse between first and last win - 29 years. Dilip Kumar won his first trophy in 1954 for Daag and his latest in 1983 for Shakti.
- Ahem! If Dilip Kumar wins one more trophy, this record will be here to stay for many more decades!
- Runner-up - Dilip Kumar won for Shakti in 1983 at the age of 61.
- Youngest Best Actor Winner - Rishi Kapoor was just 22 years old when he won his Filmfare for Bobby in 1974.
- Runner-up - Hrithik Roshan at the age of 27 for Kaho... Na Pyar Hai in 2001.
- Although Rajesh Khanna (first win 1971) and Rishi Kapoor (first win 1974) also have a shot at this record, Amitabh Bachchan is the only actor today who is likely to make it. His first win was in 1978 for Amar Akbar Anthony, and if he wins a Best Actor award in 2007 (or later), he'll equal (or usurp) this one.
