maya, I never studied her in school either. I am proud to share lineage of her husband and hence bothered to read about her even as a kid. My biology text never had her name though..

What I really dislike is the lack of flow of information from real world around children to children in Indian schools (with a few exceptions). Some REVERED speaker will once in a while come and give a speech about something to the entire school assembly. Instead of learning from his experieces / achievements, students will be more focussed on presenting a song to him.
It is so plastic how we complete our text book education as we have lost ourselves amidst showing too much resepct to people. There is no such concept as hanging out with accomplished people and to get genuinely inspired by them!! 😕😕
Why don't children get a visit from someone working with Tata/ Birlas.. someone working in the army, someone in TIFR / CRI.. Why is everything so BOOK_oriented and Why are books filled with more history than we can handle? When do we learn about RECENT achievements? Are we learning about Rakesh Sharma in our books yet??

Books are too ancient.. failing significant revisions while day to day life is focussed much on bollywood / tv celebrities. Where do kids go for inspiration?
There was a reason why I called this thread Crazy Kiya Re.. We all know the song and the dance, but none of us knew these women.. perhaps women of much more substance!!

Something to ponder..

When the TV is infested with designer sari clad stepford wives and nondensical vamps, where do you go asking for inspiration?

common women who work for a living , could be mom of a classmate!

bring your mom at school days!

Once a year we get the Astitva awards where the kids are more interested in the fields of entertainment and are more concerned about the wax doll then to find out more about the NDDB President, we know where priorities lie.

change that.. it is easy. Send kids to mingle with poeple working in factories, science labs, engineering, mechanical workshops.. have field days. Feed their curiosity..

Books don't talk about the current achievements and are ancient. Why bring in the bigshots, we have successfull entrepreneurs who reside in the same city and provide us some good examples.

I never said big shots, I said people working for tata birla.. 😆😆.. not tata birla.. 😉 .. exactly.. bring moderate achievers who can spend time with kids inspiring them

I myself woul like to meet and know Indra Nooyi one of these days, who is my role model.

i have met several nobel laur and those getting there. it is the knowledge that "they were and are just like you" that inspires children more than anything else..

Tania

so why indians schools don;t realize and accomplish these simple things?

i have visited many highschools here and given inspiring talks about a career in science. i can do it at the middle of the night because it is so much more fruitful than ur ordinary conferences. no scientific committees will ever ask the curious innocent questions kids can ask.. Those are moments to treasure.. can we not do something so simple in india? i always wonder.

good to know that tania .. 😃 the IF role model.. boy u r that not only for kids but aunties like me too. u r very creative 😊
and good to know about ramakrishna mission efforts. The social work I have done is through my high school Jnana Prabodhini. A lot that I have tried to be today has to do with my school.. OFCOURSE parents..

Dr. AS thought of THIS QUIZ as an activity for teens on IF. It is very hard to find ungooglable questions these days. I gave a hard quiz last december and january went w/o any activity. Feeling a bit ashamed, I posted the very googlable quiz yesterday. It has really got me thinking about how important it is for children to be curious about Mother Nature and her wonders instead of wondering about who is having an affair with who after dumping who and who is marrying who and when and where.

Okay Sowmyaa Ji.. This quiz thread has lived its life to the fullest 😆 😆 I will post another one next week..
