Live-In Is More Of A Practical Concern These Days " Parineeti Chopra In An Exclusive Conversation With Koimoi
Parineeti Chopra is perhaps one of the vibrant atoms of Bollywoods younger brigade of actors. A cousin to one of Bollywoods most prominent actresses, Parineeti doesnt count on her sisters shadow to carve her distinct niche in the industry. Koimoi caught up for an interview with the actress whose upcoming film Shuddh Desi Romance is already creating ripples in the industry.
What is you character in Shuddh Desi Romance all about?
Though I usually chatter a lot, my character in SDR is quite different from me. She is a young, independent, sorted out girl quite in sync with the films story itself. She is impulsive. She is in a live-in-relationship. Believes in taking her own decisions. Though in one shot she might seem bold, but given how the story is framed, you cant judge her. Despite having boyfriends and being progressive, you can really label her as loose character, such is the beauty of our script. The message is quite pertinent and put in a humorous way!
So do you personally believe in live-in-relationships too?
Personally I think there is nothing to believe in it. It is more of a practical concern these days. What is considered to be a taboo in India is actually a very simple issue. If a woman is working late and happens to have a boyfriend, where will she accommodate him. Live-ins are born more out of practical concerns these days.
Do you think Bollywood heroines are getting more bold?
Mostly they are following the demand of the script. Realism prevails more than commercialism these days, and if the script and body type demands being bold then its a thumbs up for sure. I dont shy from showing physical intimacy on screen if the script calls for it, but to do it when Im not convinced is an absolute No-No!
You are extremely talkative while your co-star Sushant Singh Rajput is a rather reticent guy? How did you manage to evolve any chemistry at all given the contrasting shades?
Oh My Goddont ask (laughs) I always end up with co-stars who are so much less talkative than me. Be itSiddharth Malhotra or Sushant, it was quite difficult getting these people to talk with the gusto I have. But with Sushant it was a great experience, since his work ideology is quite similar to mine. He does his homework like me and mostly we both work in similar ways and get the thought behind a particularly shot perfectly.
What do you think is SDR trying to preach?
The main motive of SDR is to convey to people how differently things can be perceived. While most are quick to judge a certain situation, the intentions can be perceived differently. Live-ins can be a matter of convenience too. Before the film, YRF had done a research about what people think of relationships in general, and the results we got were appalling. While we claim to a progressive nation, many Indian men would expect a girl under 18 to be a virgin or she can automatically be perceived as a loose character! It was actually shocking for me given Indias development rate!
You are one of those very few actresses about whom relationship gossips havent really gone viral. How do you save your life from becoming a debacle in public?
Of course I have faced link up stories too. Most hurtful of them was with my director Maneesh Sharma. I am in the film industry because of him. If he wasnt there, I wouldnt be here. I have so much love and respect for him as a mentor that it was highly offensive when tabloids reported that I am dating him and I am getting YRF films because we are in a relationship! It was very demeaning for me.
Finally, SDR is releasing with Zanjeer that stars your sister Priyanka Chopra. Any sibling rivalries that we can report?
Sibling rivalries (aghast!) no way. I love her too much. My primary concern is how will I watch Zanjeer.Because I have to be there for my film and still watch Priyankas. She is my sister and I hold her very dearly. Such a thought wont cross mine or her mind! I want both our films to do well thats all.
