Sony has a slate of new soaps ready to roll

By MANISHA BHATTACHARJEE
Indiantelevision.com Team

(23 October 2006 8:00 pm)

MUMBAI: Sony Entertainment Television India's ratings starved flagship channel Set is going in for a heavy dose of soaps in the coming months as compared to reality shows. The channel has lined up a slew of shows that it will be rolling out in the next five to six months.

The shows are aimed at strengthening its 8 pm to 11 pm band and attracting a new set of eyeballs and building up its viewer base.

For starters there is Jeetiya Hai Jis Ki Liye, produced by Tony and Diya Singh whose earlier Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin has been the only significant ratings success that Set has enjoyed on the soaps front in the recent past. The show will star Renuka Shahane, who will be making a comeback after her success as anchor on the popular cultural tele-magazine Surabhi.

The channel has also tied up with the Anuj Saxena's Maverick productions for a drama titled Akhand Sau Bhagyawati, says Sony's chief creative director Sandiip Sikcand.

The channel is also working with actress turned politician turned producer Smriti Irani aka Tulsi Virani for Viruddh. Irani had recently tied up with Kumarmangalam Birla's media house Applause Entertainment. She is at the moment co-producing along with Balaji Telefilms for Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasmaan (Star Plus).

As far as the channel think tank is concerned, the programming overhaul is necessary if the third-placed network is to be able to face the stiff competition from its rivals. Reality shows will be relegated to Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, while the rest of the week will see soapy dramas taking centrestage.

That's not to say reality shows will do the vanishing act from Sony's weekday prime time. The third season of Indian Idol will make its comeback in May, Sikcand points out.

"Sony is also devising its own little reality show, which will be aired twice a week which we are targeting to launch in February or March," Sikcand says. Without offering much by way of detail, Sikcand adds that the channel was yet to finalise on certain aspects of the show.

"A variety talk show is also being designed, for which the channel has roped in Anupam Kher as anchor. This one hour weekend show will basically deal with hopes and aspirations," he explains.

Getting back to the soap train, Sikcand say Set has in its kitty Khamoshi as well. Additionally, there is also a show that Sony has commissioned Film Farm to do, he adds.

Sonu bails out of Indian Idol 3
By: Tushar Joshi
January 25, 2007

Sonu Niigaam
After judging the first two seasons of Indian Idol, Sonu Niigaam has decided he needs a break. The show's third installment will now have to make do without him. Presently holidaying in Egypt, Sonu says, "I'm not judging Indian Idol any more.

Quite frankly, they never approached me again either. I guess they needed a change as much as I needed time away from television. It's mutually beneficial for both parties."

No rivalry

On Tuesday, HiTLIST had reported that Sony approached Himesh Reshammiya to play judge along with Anu Malik, Farah Khan and Sonu. With this inclusion, sources say it was evident Sonu wouldn't want to be on the same panel as his rival.

Even though Sonu declines from giving a comment on this, a close friend of his reveals, "Himesh is not the reason for Sonu's decision to part ways with Indian Idol. He had made up his mind not to do the show a long time ago and was unaware that the channel had approached Himesh. These days, Sonu is busy with his concerts and really doesn't have time to bother about these things."

Nii
gaam concurs that his concert in Egypt was a truly remarkable experience. He says, "We put up a concert of a lifetime in Egypt a few days ago. Performing under the legendary pyramids was an indescribable feeling. For any artist, it's an extraordinary experience."

An official guest of the Egyptian Tourism Board, Sonu has also pencilled in some sightseeing on the trip. "I am here with friends and family, so we marked three days exclusively for taking in the sights and sounds of this wonderful country. It's an honour to be treated with such respect by a foreign government."

No rockstar

On the personal front, Sonu says he's learning to count his blessings these days. "I'm listening to God with humility now. I'm working, partying, going to different places and getting to know the rest of the world."

So is he a rockstar-turned-hermit now? Sonu cheekily says, "I'm not a rockstar. I'm a student of a profession that entertains people. I have no false assumptions about myself!"

Are you listening, Mr R?

Himesh to judge Indian Idol 3?
By: Shaheen Parkar
January 23, 2007

Himesh Reshammiya

Now that Star's money-spinner KBC 3 is back on air, can Sony's prized horse, Indian Idol be far behind? It's currently work-in-progress for the third installment of Indian Idol and there's a lot of buzz that Himesh Reshammiya is under consideration as one of the judges on the show.

It is reliably learnt that the current music sensation has been approached with the offer, a move that is sure to garner huge eyeballs for the channel. Himesh sharing the platform with other Idol judges like Anu Malik, Sonu Niigaam and Farah Khan is bound to attract curiosity.

When asked about the offer, Reshammiya prefers to remain non-committal. "At this stage, I don't want to say anything," he says.

Casting coup

Reshammiya has earlier been a judge on Zee's Sa Re Ga Ma Pa. Apparently, he has been offered the role of judge for the new season of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa as well.

Says an onlooker, "The concerned authorities have approached Reshammiya with the offer but he has yet to decide. The music industry is abuzz with the cold war between Himesh and Sonu, so getting them together on the same platform will be a casting coup for the show."

Sony has the license to stage four seasons of the desi version of American Idol, which is having a run on Star World presently.

"The production aspects and other nitty-gritties of the show are being worked upon. The names of the rest of the judges are also under consideration. At this juncture, it is very early to say anything about the various details of the show. It is still in the initial stages of planning and discussion." says the onlooker.

Indian Idol 1 (November 2004-March 2005) was a big draw and made the winner Abhijit Sawant a household name across the country. Indian Idol 2 (November 2005-April 2006) had Sandeep Acharya bag the crown, but he was not as popular as its predecessor.

Sonu to be missing from Indian Idol 3
By MIO Team
Jan 27, 2007, 04:54

Singer-actor Sonu Nigam had been one of the judges of the talent hunt show Indian Idol for both the seasons. But he'll be missing from Indian Idol 3. Though he cites the reason that he needs time away from television and is looking forward for a break, we cannot rule out that it might be because of the inclusion of his rival Himesh Reshammiya. Sony had approached Himesh Reshammiya to be a judge along with Anu Malik, Farah Khan and Sonu. And sources say that Sonu didn't want to be in the same panel as his rival. However Sonu makes it clear that the channel hasn't approached him at all.

He is currently holidaying in Egypt after a 'truly remarkable' concert and says, "I'm not judging Indian Idol any more. Quite frankly, they never approached me again either. I guess they needed a change as much as I needed time away from television. It's mutually beneficial for both parties." About the concert he says, "We put up a concert of a lifetime in Egypt a few days ago. Performing under the legendary pyramids was an indescribable feeling. For any artist, it's an extraordinary experience."

What are the other things happening in his life? "I'm listening to God with humility now. I'm working, partying, going to different places and getting to know the rest of the world. I'm a student of a profession that entertains people. I have no false assumptions about myself!"

Hussain to co-anchor Indian Idol 3
By: Vickey Lalwani
January 29, 2007

Replacement host: Hussain Kuwajerwala

Aman Varma will not host Sony's Indian Idol 3, so this season's Nach Baliye winner Hussain Kuwajerwala will step into his shoes. Mini Mathur, meanwhile, will continue to co-anchor the show.

Natural choice

The duo was finalised ten days ago, and Sony has strictly instructed them not to talk about the appointment. But a source from the show told us, "Sony wanted a new set of anchors and hence zeroed in on Hussain.

They contemplated replacing Mini as well, but then decided against it. Hussain took some time to confirm his participation though, but Sony is very happy now that he has agreed; he is a natural anchor."

Hussain and Mini have never worked together before but from the looks of it, Mini should get along with the affable actor just fine. It may be remembered that Mini wasn't exactly fond of her erstwhile co-anchor Aman and gave a lot of thought before saying yes to Indian Idol 2.

Aman Varma

Moving on

When contacted, Aman said that he wasn't aware of Hussain's participation in Indian Idol 3. "I have not got a call in this regard from Sony.

But I must say that it will be an ego boost for me if Hussain does it. This is the second time that a show that started with me is going to Hussain. A similar thing happened with Khulja Sim Sim."

As for his problems with Mini, Aman simply quipped, "I didn't have any issues with Mini. If she had issues with me then maybe you should ask her about it."

As for the third installment of the show, Aman said, "I wish Indian Idol 3 the best. I was disappointed that that the second season did not match up to the first but I won't comment on the reasons why.

I must also say that I am not disappointed that I have not been chosen for the third season. I have always moved on in life."

New Idol judges: Alisha, Udit
By: Tushar Joshi
February 14, 2007

Alisha Chinai and Udit Narayan

Indian Idol 3 will not only have new hosts but a new set of judges as well. After Sonu Niigaam and Farah Khan declined from judging the reality show this year, Sony has finally zeroed in on two new names — Alisha Chinai and Udit Narayan — to select the next Indian Idol. Anu Malik will continue on as the third judge.

Leading the pack

Confirming this development, Sony's creative head Sandiip Sikcand says, "We are excited to have Udit and Alisha on our show.

The reason we chose them is because of their mastery in music and the extensive work they have done over the years.

With these three names, we cover the entire spectrum of the music world." Talking about the judges, Sandiip says, "Alisha has proven her versatility as a singer time and again, so we thought she would be terrific for the show.

Similarly, Udit has a string of hits to his name and is looked up as one of the leading playback singers in India. And finally, with Anu, we have an established music director on the panel."

When asked how different the new season will be from the previous two, he says, "The tag line this year is Indian Idol — Bharat Ki Shaan. We are looking at a singer who can demonstrate variety and sing any kind of a song.

He or she should be able to sing a Lata Mangeshkar number as well the latest chartbuster from Sunidhi Chauhan. This time, we are stressing more on the voice and the depth the singer can show."

Big promises

Calling this the biggest Idol season the channel has produced, Sikcand says, "Indian Idol 3 is going to be huge, not just in terms of infrastructure and setting, but also in the wide audience reach.

We are going to 12 cities this year, which is the maximum we have ever been."

When asked if the X-factor will still be a big criteria for choosing the winner, he adds, "The focus will be on the voice. We already have Fame X that takes care of the X factor." Indian Idol 3 is expected to go on air in the first week of June.
