M y loved ones can bring tears to my eyes. But if I want to, I can even be Durga," says Ashwini Kalsekar. It's possible that this ability of hers impressed Ektaa Kapoor and now Deeya and Tony Singh who have cast her in the role of Adira, the negative lead in Jeete Hain Jiske Liye.
Kalsekar has been working for 20 years. Shanti, Ek Aur Mahabharat, CID, Siddhant, K Street Pali Hill and Kasamh Se are some of the shows on her CV And it's Jeete.. which estab . lished her as a vamp. Kapoor cast her as Jigyasa, Jai Walia's divorcee sister in Kasamh Se. Jigyasa is a strong woman who fiercely guards the future of her three children. She states, "So when Jai gets married to Bani and her two sisters, Pia and Rano enter their house, Jigyasa is threatened. She is insecure about her own and her children's future. I had to go all out and play Jigyasa as this completely over the top negative woman." However, she's no longer playing Jigyasa. Reason? All she says is, "My mother always said let bygones be bygones. Don't mull over what happened." She adds, "The character was shaping up differently, I couldn't play it any longer." Yet, Jigyasa crops up frequently in her conversation. Why not? After all it fetched her an award and acclaim. Speaking about Adira, did the producers fall short of calling her Nadira? She guffaws, "Adira is similar to Jigyasa, in the sense that she's again a single mother who lives in the Dhanrajgir family. Ayub Khan plays my nephew who marries Anjali (Renuka Shahane). I create havoc in her life. Again, I am insecure about my future in the family. That's why I don't want her to have children. "Adira's word is the gospel truth for the family. Even god can't do anything. Unlike Jigyasa she's classy, subtle, not in your face." Although Kalsekar was to work with the Singhs in one of their earlier shows, Just Mohabbat, they had to wait a while before things fell in place for Jeete... The actress has also featured in Rajkumar Santoshi's Khakee and Prakash Jha's Apaharan. She says, "I have been fortunate to get meaty roles right from the time I started my career — be it in Shanti, as Draupadi in Chandraprakash Dwivedi's Ek Aur Mahabharat or CID and Siddhant in which I played a cop." "Jigyasa was my first big negative role and now Adira… producers must be seeing me as a strong woman, not easily shaken or stirred," she ends. On her Jeete Hain Jiske Liye co-stars RENUKA SHAHANE She's a brilliant actress with a sunshine smile. AYUB KHAN I had worked with him in a film..he gets great food for me from home. He's unlimited fun. MAANINEE DE We are not school mates but it seems as if we've known each other forever. ANOOP SONI A good actor and my first-co-star from Shanti; it's always a pleasure to work with.
