In fact, this is a big shame on India cinema that even after making movies for over 50 YEARS, there are only 3 movies that have been nominated in Oscars (Mother India, Salaam Bombay, and Lagaan). Indian cinema is often self-acclaimed to be the biggest movie industry in the world in number of movies, actually also in number of movies with different languages. Indian movies are exported everywhere, east of India and west of India and are enjoyed by South Asians, Arabs, Far East Asians, and to a very good extent also by Europeans and Americans.
Let me inform you a little bit more, developing third world countries like Algeria and even Bosnia have won an Oscar for a foreign film. Oh my God, Bosnia was only a decade old country when it won its 1st Oscar in 2001 and how long has India been a nation? And please don't pull up the crap that they are racist at the Academy, they have nominated and given Oscars to several different movies with people from Arab, Far East, and Slavic backgrounds.
In order to succeed in the foreign market artistically and advocating that we do make good movies, we have to present them with good stuff. Saying that Indian movies are not adaptable to people of other languages is a very unconvincing statement. The fact of the matter is that often the Indian Film Federation sends wrong movies to the Academy. In 2002, it send Devdas, a very wrong choice. The movie that should have been sent for 2002 was Company. It you want the Academy to watch a sensible movie, please pick a sensible movie. The problem is that most of the movies we make are stupid, not all, but most, which are very often copied from foreign movies. It is a failure that we haven't won a single Oscar in over 50 years. We claim to have and have had great showmen like Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Yash Chopra, Subhash Ghai and Shahrukh Khan, and WOW, these great actors and directors were not able to give even a single Oscar nomination. What could be the reason for this?
If you have to copy a movie from Hollywood, if you want to shoot your movie in US, if you want to promote your movie in US, if you want people to get a interest in India further, you have to believe in Oscars. How can other younger and less advanced film industries like Bosnia and Algeria with their limited movies can win Oscars but we cannot. Awards matter, trust me, they are only going to bring in more interest.
In fact, there is only one Indian who has won an Oscar, I am very well sure that most of the people who visit Indiafm.com don't even know what his name is. He is Satyajit Ray who won an Honorary Oscar, that is a great achievement, in 1994. He wasn't a model or a son of an actor, he was an artist. Please go and look that guy up so you know what kind of people really matter. I would really appreciate it if people read this and reply.
